Bi-orthogonal harmonics for the decomposition of gravitational radiation II: applications for extreme and comparable mass-ratio black hole binaries

The estimation of a physical system's normal modes is a fundamental problem in physics. The quasi-normal modes of perturbed Kerr black holes, with their related spheroidal harmonics, are key examples, and have diverse applications in gravitational wave theory and data analysis. Recently, it has been shown that \textit{adjoint}-spheroidal harmonics and the related spheroidal multipole moments may be used to estimate the radiative modes of arbitrary sources. In this paper, we investigate whether spheroidal multipole moments, relative to their spherical harmonic counterparts, better approximate the underlying modes of binary black hole spacetimes. We begin with a brief introduction to adjoint-spheroidal harmonics. We then detail a rudimentary kind of spheroidal harmonic decomposition, as well as its generalization which simultaneously estimates pro- and retrograde moments. Example applications to numerical waveforms from comparable and extreme mass-ratio binary black hole coalescences are provided. We discuss the morphology of related spheroidal moments during inspiral, merger, and ringdown. We conclude by discussing potential applications in gravitational wave theory and signal modeling.

Observational Limit on Gravitational Waves from Binary Neutron Stars in the Galaxy

Using optimal matched filtering, we search 25 hours of data from the LIGO 40-meter prototype laser interferometric gravitational-wave detector for gravitational-wave chirps emitted by coalescing binary systems within our Galaxy. This is the first test of this filtering technique on real interferometric data. An upper limit on the rate R of neutron star binary inspirals in our Galaxy is obtained: with 90% confidence, R< 0.5/hour. Similar experiments with LIGO interferometers will provide constraints on the population of tight binary neutron star systems in the Universe.

Study of the reaction pbar p -> phi phi from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c

A study has been performed of the reaction pbar p -> 4K using in-flight antiprotons from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c incident momentum interacting with a hydrogen jet target. The reaction is dominated by the production of a pair of phi mesons. The pbar p -> phi phi cross section rises sharply above threshold and then falls continuously as a function of increasing antiproton momentum. The overall magnitude of the cross section exceeds expectations from a simple application of the OZI rule by two orders of magnitude. In a fine scan around the xi/f_J(2230) resonance, no structure is observed. A limit is set for the double branching ratio B(xi -> pbar p) * B(xi -> phi phi) < 6e-5 for a spin 2 resonance of M = 2.235 GeV and Width = 15 MeV.
