On maximum parallel classes in packings

The integer $β(ρ, v, k)$ is defined to be the maximum number of blocks in any $(v, k)$-packing in which the maximum partial parallel class (or PPC) has size $ρ$. This problem was introduced and studied by Stinson for the case $k=3$. Here, we mainly consider the case $k = 4$ and we obtain some upper bounds and lower bounds on $β(ρ, v, 4)$. We also provide some explicit constructions of $(v,4)$-packings having a maximum PPC of a given size $ρ$. For small values of $ρ$, the number of blocks of the constructed packings are very close to the upper bounds on $β(ρ, v, 4)$. Some of our methods are extended to the cases $k > 4$.

An Enhanced Passkey Entry Protocol for Secure Simple Pairing in Bluetooth

In this paper, we propose a simple enhancement for the passkey entry protocol in the authentication stage 1 of Secure Simple Pairing using preexisting cryptographic hash functions and random integer generation present in the protocol. The new protocol is more secure and efficient than previous known protocols. Our research mainly focuses on strengthening the passkey entry protocol and protecting the devices against passive eavesdropping and active Man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks in both Bluetooth Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR) and Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE). This method can be used for any device which uses the passkey entry protocol.

Coded Caching Schemes with Linear Subpacketizations

In coded caching system we prefer to design a coded caching scheme with low subpacketization and small transmission rate (i.e., the low implementation complexity and the efficient transmission during the peak traffic times). Placement delivery arrays (PDA) can be used to design code caching schemes. In this paper we propose a framework of constructing PDAs via Hamming distance. As an application, two classes of coded caching schemes with linear subpacketizations and small transmission rates are obtained.

On Secure Coded Caching via Combinatorial Method

Coded caching is an efficient way to reduce network traffic congestion during peak hours by storing some content at the user's local cache memory without knowledge of later demands. The goal of coded caching design is to minimize the transmission rate and the subpacketization. In practice the demand for each user is sensitive since one can get the other users' preferences when it gets the other users' demands. The first coded caching scheme with private demands was proposed by Wan et al. However the transmission rate and the subpacketization of their scheme increase with the file number stored in the library. In this paper we consider the following secure coded caching: prevent the wiretappers from obtaining any information about the files in the server and protect the demands from all the users in the delivery phase. We firstly introduce a combinatorial structure called secure placement delivery array (SPDA in short) to realize a coded caching scheme for our security setting. Then we obtain three classes of secure schemes by constructing SPDAs, where one of them is optimal. It is worth noting that the transmission rates and the subpacketizations of our schemes are independent to the file number. Furthermore, comparing with the previously known schemes with the same security setting, our schemes have significantly advantages on the subpacketizations and for some parameters have the advantage on the transmission rates.

Combinatorial Repairability for Threshold Schemes

In this paper, we consider methods whereby a subset of players in a $(k,n)$-threshold scheme can "repair" another player's share in the event that their share has been lost or corrupted. This will take place without the participation of the dealer who set up the scheme. The repairing protocol should not compromise the (unconditional) security of the threshold scheme, and it should be efficient, where efficiency is measured in terms of the amount of information exchanged during the repairing process. We study two approaches to repairing. The first method is based on the "enrollment protocol" from \cite{NSG} which was originally developed to add a new player to a threshold scheme (without the participation of the dealer) after the scheme was set up. The second method distributes "multiple shares" to each player, as defined by a suitable combinatorial design. This method results in larger shares, but lower communication complexity, as compared to the first method.

Semi-cyclic holey group divisible designs with block size three and applications to sampling designs and optical orthogonal codes

We consider the existence problem for a semi-cyclic holey group divisible design of type (n,m^t) with block size 3, which is denoted by a 3-SCHGDD of type (n,m^t). When t is odd and n\neq 8 or t is doubly even and t\neq 8, the existence problem is completely solved; when t is singly even, many infinite families are obtained. Applications of our results to two-dimensional balanced sampling plans and optimal two-dimensional optical orthogonal codes are also discussed.
