Capillary-driven biaxial planar and homeotropic nematization of hard cylinders

We use the Parsons Lee modification of Onsagers second virial theory within the restricted orientation approximation to analyse the phase behaviour of hard cylindrical rods confined in narrow pores Depending on the wall to wall separation we predict a number of distinctly different surface generated nematic phases including a biaxial planar nematic with variable number of layers a monolayer homeotropic and a hybrid T type structure For narrow pores we find evidence of two types of second order uniaxial biaxial transitions depending on the aspect ratio of the particles More specifically we observe a continuous cross over from n to layers each with a distinct planar anchoring symmetry as well as first order transitions from planar to homeotropic surface anchoring Contrary to the previously studied case of parallelepipeds we find that the surface anchoring transition from planar to homeotropic symmetry occurs at much lower overall rod packing fractions

From n-layer planar ordering to the monolayer homeotropic structure of confined hard rods: The effect of shape anisotropy and wall-to-wall separation

Using the Parsons Lee theory we examined the effect of shape anisotropy and the wall to wall separation on the phase behavior of the hard parallelepiped rods with dimensions L, D, and D (L>D) in such narrow slitlike pores which only one homeotropic layer can form. The phase structures, including biaxiality, planar nematic layering transition as well as planar to homeotropic, were studied for some separations in the range 2.5D<H<10.0D for H-D<L<H.

Demixing and tetratic ordering in some binary mixtures of hard superellipses

We examine the fluid phase behaviour of the binary mixture of hard superellipses using the scaled particle theory The superellipse is a general two dimensional convex object which can be tuned between circular and rectangular shapes continuously at a given aspect ratio. We find that the shape of the particle affects strongly the stability of isotropic nematic and tetratic phases even if the aspect ratios of both species are fixed. While the isotropic isotropic demixing transition can be ruled out using the scaled particle theory the first order isotropic nematic and the nematic nematic demixing transition can be stabilized with strong fractionation between the components. It is observed that the demixing tendency is strongest in small rectangle large ellipse mixtures. Interestingly, it is possible to stabilize the tetratic order at lower densities in the mixture of hard squares and rectangles where the long rectangles form nematic phase, while the squares stay in tetratic order.

Shear viscosity of p-wave superfluid Fermi gas with weak interaction at low temperatures

The shear viscosity tensor of the superfluid Fermi gas in p-wave state with weak interaction is calculated at low temperatures, by using the Boltzmann equation approach. We consider the transition probabilities for the binary, decay and coalescence processes. We show that only the binary processes are dominated at low temperatures and the components of shear viscosity η_xy, η_xx, η_yy are proportional to (1/T)^2, and η_xz, η_yz and η_zz are proportional to (1/T)^4 and (1/T)^6, respectively.

Tracking three-phase coexistences in binary mixtures of hard plates and spheres

The stability of demixing phase transition in binary mixtures of hard plates (with thickness L and diameter D) and hard spheres (with diameter $σ$) is studied by means of Parsons-Lee theory. The isotropic-isotropic demixing, which is found in mixtures of large spheres and small plates, is very likely to be preempted by crystallization. In contrast, the nematic-nematic demixing, which is obtained in mixtures of large plates and small spheres, can be stabilized at low diameter ratios ($σ$/D) and aspect ratios (L/D). At intermediate values of $σ$/D, where the sizes of the components are similar, neither the isotropic-isotropic nor the nematic-nematic demixing can be stabilized, but a very strong fractionation takes place between a plate rich nematic and a sphere rich isotropic phases. Our results show that the excluded volume interactions are capable alone to explain the experimental observation of the nematic-nematic demixing, but they fail for the description of isotropic-isotropic one (Chen et. al., Soft Matter, 11, 5775 (2015)).
