The stability of the de-Sitter universe in nonlocal gravity

We constructed the ghost-free condition for nonlocal gravity using de-Sitter background field expansion and identified the structure of the nontrivial form factors. Our analysis shows that the particle spectrum of this model is nearly equivalent to general relativity(GR), with the potential addition of a scalar particle with positive mass m. Additionally, by employing recursion relations, we established the equivalence between nonlocal gravity and higher-derivative gravity. Moreover, we provided a comprehensive proof of the stability of de-Sitter solution within the nonlocal framework.

Adiabatic accretion onto black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

We study the adiabatic accretion process of ordinary baryonic gas onto spherically symmetric black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory, with two parameters $α$ and $β$ in the coupling term. Especially, we demonstrate the range of the transonic points in terms of the charge-to-mass ratio squared and the dimensionless coordinate radius, in two important classes of black holes as examples. Further, we find that the two coupling parameters give modifications to the mass accretion rate at different orders of the sound speed at infinity. We also present their different effects on the temperature ratios of the accreted gas.

Exact solution for accretion onto a moving charged dilaton black hole

We present an analytic solution for accretion of a gaseous medium with adiabatic equation of state onto a charged dilaton black hole which moves at a constant velocity. We determine the four-velocity of accreted flow and find that it possesses axial symmetry. We obtain the particle number density and the accretion rate which depend on the mass, the magnetic charge, and the dilation of black hole, meaning that these parameters take important roles in the process of accretion. Possible theoretical and observational constraints on the parameter related to the dilation are discussed. The results may help us to get deeper understanding of the behavior of accreted flow near the event horizon of black hole.

The First Insight-HXMT Gamma-Ray Burst Catalog: The First Four Years

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), is China's first X-ray astronomy satellite launched on June 15, 2017. The anti-coincidence CsI detectors of the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard Insight-HXMT could serve as an all-sky gamma-ray monitor in about 0.2-3 MeV. In its first four years of operation, Insight-HXMT has detected 322 Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) by offline search pipeline including blind search and targeted search. For the GOLDEN sample of Insight-HXMT GRBs, joint analyses were performed with other GRB missions, including Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi/GBM), Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift/BAT) and Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM). It shows that Insight-HXMT can provide better constraint on GRB spectrum at higher energy band. The properties of Insight-HXMT GRBs are reported in detail, including their trigger time, duration, spectral parameters, peak fluxes of different time scales and fluence. This catalog is an official product of the Insight-HXMT GRB team.

Thermodynamics of black hole in $D$-dimensional $f(R)$ theory

We consider whether the new horizon-first law works in higher-dimensional $f(R)$ theory. We firstly obtain the general formulas to calculate the entropy and the energy of a general spherically-symmetric black hole in $D$-dimensional $f(R)$ theory. For applications, we compute the entropies and the energies of some black hokes in some interesting higher-dimensional $f(R)$ theories.

Accretion on High Derivative Asymptotically Safe Black Holes

Asymptotically safe gravity is one effective approach to quantum gravity. It is important to differentiate the modified gravity inspired by asymptotically safe gravity. In this paper, we examine the matter particles dynamics near the improved version of Schwarzschild black hole. We assume that in the context of asymptotically safe gravity scenario the ambient matter surrounding the black hole is of isothermal in nature and investigate the spherical accretion of matter by deriving solutions at critical points. The analysis for the various values of the state parameter for isothermal test fluids, viz., $k=1,~1/2,~1/3,~1/4$ show the possibility of accretion onto asymptotically safe black hole. We formulate the accretion problem as Hamiltonian dynamical system and explain its phase flow in detail which reveals interesting results in asymptotically safe gravity theory.

Entropy and Energy of Static Spherically Symmetric Black Hole in $f(R)$ theory

We consider the new horizon first law in $f(R)$ theory with general spherically symmetric black hole. We derive the general formulas to computed the entropy and energy of the black hole. For applications, some nontrivial black hole solutions in some popular $f(R)$ theories are investigated, the entropies and the energies of black holes in these models are first calculated.

Effects of quantum fluctuations of metric on the universe

We consider a model of modified gravity from the nonperturbative quantization of a metric. We obtain the modified gravitational field equations and the modified conservational equations. We apply it to the FLRW spacetime and find that due to the quantum fluctuations a bounce universe can be obtained and a decelerated expansion can also possibly be obtained in a dark energy dominated epoch. We also discuss the effects of quantum fluctuations on inflation parameters (such as slow-roll parameters, spectral index, and the spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation) and find values of parameters in the comparing the predictions of inflation can also work to drive the current epoch of acceleration. We obtain the constraints on the parameter of the theory from the observation of the big bang nucleosynthesis.

Quantum hoop conjecture and a natural cutoff for vacuum energy of a scalar field

We propose here a quantum hoop conjecture which states: the de Broglie wavelength of a quantum system cannot be arbitrarily small, it must be larger than the characterized Schwarzschild radius of the quantum system. Based on this conjecture, we find an upper bound for the wave number (or the momentum) of a particle, which offers a natural cutoff for the vacuum energy of a scalar field.

Transient acceleration in $f(T)$ gravity

Recently a $f(T)$ gravity based on the modification of the teleparallel gravity was proposed to explain the accelerated expansion of the universe without the need of dark energy. We use observational data from Type Ia Supernovae, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, and Cosmic Microwave Background to constrain this $f(T)$ theory and reconstruct the effective equation of state and the deceleration parameter. We obtain the best-fit values of parameters and find an interesting result that the $f(T)$ theory considered here allows for the accelerated Hubble expansion to be a transient effect.

Quantum gravity corrections to accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole

Quantum gravity corrections to accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole are considered in the context of asymptotically safe scenario. The possible positions of the critical points are discussed and the general conditions for critical points are obtained. The explicit expressions for matter density compression and temperature profile both below the critical radius and at the event horizon are derived. For polytropic matter, we determine the corrected temperature and the integrated flux resulting from quantum gravity effects at the event horizon, which might be as a test of asymptotically safe scenario.

The evolution of the power law k-essence cosmology

We investigate the evolution of the power law k-essence field in FRWL spacetime. The autonomous dynamical system and critical points are obtained. The corresponding cosmological parameters, such as $Ω_{ϕ}$ and $w_{ϕ}$, are calculated at these critical points. We find it is possible to achieve an equation of state crossing through $-1$ for k-essence field. The results we obtained indicate that the power law k-essence dark energy model can be compatible with observations.

Discriminating dark energy models by using the statefinder hierarchy and the growth rate of matter perturbations

We apply the Statefinder hierarchy and the growth rate of matter perturbations to discriminate modified Chaplygin gas (MCG), generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG), superfluid Chaplygin gas (SCG), purely kinetic k-essence (PKK), and $Λ$CDM model. We plot the evolutional trajectories of these models in the statefinder plane and in the composite diagnostic plane. We find that GCG, MCG, SCG, PKK, and $Λ$CDM can be distinguished well from each other at the present epoch by using the composite diagnostic $\{ε(z), S^{(1)}_{5}\}$. Using other combinations, such as $\{S^{(1)}_{3}, S^{(1)}_4\}$, $\{S^{(1)}_{3}, S_{5}\}$, $\{ε(z), S^{(1)}_{3}\}$, and $\{ε(z), S_4 \}$, some of these five dark energy models cannot be distinguished.

Is gravity entropic force?

If we assume that the source of thermodynamic system, $ρ$ and $p$, are also the source of gravity, thermal quantities, such as entropy, temperature, and chemical potential, can induce effects of gravity, or gravity can induce thermal effects. We find only for systems with constant temperature and zero chemical potential, gravity can be seen as an entropic force. The case for Newtonian approximation is discussed.

Large-scale structure in superfluid Chaplygin gas cosmology

We investigate the growth of large-scale structure in the superfluid Chaplygin gas (SCG) model. Both linear and non-linear growth, such as $σ_8$ and the skewness $S_3$, are discussed. We find the growth factor of SCG reduces to the EdS case at early times while differs from the $Λ$CDM case in the large $a$ limit. We also find there will be much stricture growth on large scales in the SCG scenario than in $Λ$CDM and the variations of $σ_{8}$ and $S_3$ between SCG and $Λ$CDM can not be discriminated.

Spatial Ricci scalar dark energy model

Inspired by holographic principle, we suggest that the density of dark energy is proportional to the spatial Ricci scalar curvature (SRDE). Such model is phenomenologically viable. The best fit values of its parameters at 68% confidence level are found to be: $Ω_{\rm m0}=0.259\pm0.016$ and $α=0.261\pm0.0122$, constrained from the Union+CFA3 sample of 397 SNIa and the BAO measurement. We find the equation of state of SRDE crosses -1 at $z\simeq-0.14$. The present values of the deceleration parameter $q(z)$ for SRDE is found to be $q_{z=0}\sim -0.85$. The phase transition from deceleration to acceleration of the Universe for SRDE occurs at the redshift $z_{q=0}\sim 0.4$. After studying on the perturbation of each component of the Universe, we show that the matter power spectra and cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy is slightly affected by SRDE, compared with $Λ$CDM.

Test of conformal gravity with astrophysical observations

Since it can describe the rotation curves of galaxies without dark matter and can give rise to accelerated expansion, conformal gravity attracts much attention recently. As a theory of modified gravity, it is important to test conformal gravity with astrophysical observations. Here we constrain conformal gravity with SNIa and Hubble parameter data and investigate whether it suffers from an age problem with the age of APM~08279+5255. We find conformal gravity can accommodate the age of APM~08279+5255 at 3 $σ$ deviation, unlike most of dark energy models which suffer from an age problem.

preprint2012arXiv

Asymptotically safe phantom cosmology

We consider quantum modifications to phantom cosmology in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. The cosmological evolution equations improved by the renormalization group are obtained. For exponential potential, we find two types of cosmological fixed point; the renormalization group scale either freezes in, or continues to evolve with scale factor. We discuss the implications of each of these points, and investigate especially whether the big rip can be avoided. If the fixed point of renormalization group flow coincides with the cosmological fixed point, the universe will be dominated by dark matter and will be free from the big rip.

Dynamics of generalized tachyon field

We investigate the dynamics of generalized tachyon field in FRW spacetime. We obtain the autonomous dynamical system for the general case. Because the general autonomous dynamical system cannot be solved analytically, we discuss two cases in detail: $β=1$ and $β=2$. We find the critical points and study their stability. At these critical points, we also consider the stability of the generalized tachyon field, which is as important as the stability of critical points. The possible final states of the universe are discussed.

Conformal transformation in $f(T)$ theories

It is well-known that $f(R)$ theories are dynamically equivalent to a particular class of scalar-tensor theories. In analogy to the $f(R)$ extension of the Einstein-Hilbert action of general relativity, $f(T)$ theories are generalizations of the action of teleparallel gravity. The field equations are always second order, remarkably simpler than $f(R)$ theories. It is interesting to investigate whether $f(T)$ theories have the similar conformal features possessed in $f(R)$ theories. It is shown, however, that $f(T)$ theories are not dynamically equivalent to teleparallel action plus a scalar field via conformal transformation, there appears an additional scalar-torsion coupling term. We discuss briefly what constraint of this coupling term may be put on $f(T)$ theories from observations of the solar system.

preprint2011arXiv

New types of $f(T)$ gravity

Recently $f(T)$ theories based on modifications of teleparallel gravity where torsion is the geometric object describing gravity instead of curvature have been proposed to explain the present cosmic accelerating expansion. The field equations are always second order, remarkably simpler than $f(R)$ theories. In analogy to the $f(R)$ theory, we consider here three types of $f(T)$ gravity, and find that all of them can give rise to cosmic acceleration with interesting features, respectively.

preprint2011arXiv

Phase-space analysis of a class of k-essence cosmology

We perform a detailed phase-space analysis of a class of k-essence cosmology. We find the critical points can be divided into three classes: points unstable but the model stable, both points and the model stable, points stable but the model unstable. Like the case of points unstable but the model stable, the case of points stable but the model unstable is not relevant from a cosmological point of view, though they can be late-time attractors for the universe. So in order to study the possible final state of the universe, it is important to investigate not only the stability of the critical points but also the stability of the model. The case of both points and the model stable can further be divided into two classes: points only presenting decelerating phases and points at which all decelerating, constant-speed, and accelerating phases can appear; the final state of the universe dependents on the potential.

Geometrical diagnostic for purely kinetic k-essence dark energy

Geometrical diagnostic, involving the statefinder $\{r,s\}$ and $Om(x)$, is widely used to discriminate different dark energy models. We apply the statefinder $\{r,s\}$ and $Om(x)$ to purely kinetic k-essence dark energy model with Dirac-Born-Infeld-like Lagrangian which can be considered as scalar field realizations of Chaplygin gas. We plot the evolution trajectories of this model in the statefinder parameter-planes and $Om(x)$ parameter-plane. We find that the statefinder $\{r,s\}$ and $Om(x)$ fail to distinguish purely kinetic k-essence model from $Λ$CDM model at 68.3% confidence level for $z\ll 1$.

preprint2010arXiv

Restrictions on purely kinetic k-essence

We restrict purely kinetic k-essence. Assuming the equation of state is a power law of the kinetic energy: $w=w_0X^α$, to obtain accelerated phases, we must have $α>0$ as one of necessary conditions, constrained from the conditions for stability and causality, and the k-essence must behave like phantom. We also study the evolutions of the equation of state and the speed of sound with numerical simulation.

preprint2010arXiv

The age problem in $Λ$CDM model

The age problem in the $Λ$CDM model is re-examined. We define the elapsed time $T$ of an object is its age plus the age of the Universe when it was born. Therefore in any cosmology, $T$ must be smaller than the age of the Universe. For the old quasar APM 08279+5255 at $z=3.91$, previous studies have determined the best-fit value of $T$, 1 $σ$ lower limit and the lowest limit to $T$ are 2.3, 2.0 and 1.7 Gyr, respectively. Constrained from SNIa$+R+A+d$, SNIa$+R+A+d+H(z)$, and WMAP5+2dF+SNLS+HST+BBN, the $Λ$CDM model can only accommodate $T(z=3.91)=1.7$ Gyr at 1 $σ$ deviation. Constrained from WMAP5 results only, the $Λ$CDM model can only accommodate $T(z=3.91)=1.7$ Gyr at 2 $σ$ deviation. In all these cases, we found that $Λ$CDM model accommodates the total age (14 Gyr for $z=0$) of the Universe estimated from old globular clusters, but cannot accommodate statistically the 1 $σ$ lower limit to the best-fit age of APM~08279+5255 at $z=3.91$. These results imply that the $Λ$CDM model may suffer from an age problem.
