Single-pion contribution to the Gerasimov--Drell--Hearn sum rule and related integrals

Phenomenological amplitudes obtained in partial-wave analyses (PWA) of single-pion photoproduction are used to evaluate the contribution of this process to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH), Baldin and Gell-Mann-Goldberger-Thirring (GGT) sum rules, by integrating up to 2 GeV in photon energy. Our study confirms that the single-pion contribution to all these sum rules converges even before the highest considered photon energy, but the levels of saturation are very different in the three cases. Single-pion production almost saturates the GDH sum rule for the proton, while a large fraction is missing in the neutron case. The Baldin integrals for the proton and the neutron are both saturated to about four fifths of the predicted total strength. For the GGT sum rule, the wide variability in predictions precludes any definitive statement.

On the Photoproduction Reactions $γd\toπNN$

A review of our works providing a theoretical description of incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron is presented. The existing $γd\toπNN$ data are analysed, especially those obtained more recently by the CLAS Collaboration at JLab, the A2 Collaboration at MAMI at Mainz, and the PION@MAX-lab Collaboration at Lund. A procedure, which accounts for the final state interactions (FSI), is applied to extract $γn\toπN$ differential cross sections from the deuteron data. The role of FSI is discussed. We also comment on the results of other works in connection with some discrepancies seen in comparing the model with experiment. The electromagnetic properties of baryon $N^\ast$ resonances, improved using the extracted $γn\toπN$ differential cross sections, are presented. A model description of the cross section data from charged-pion photoproduction reactions $γd\toπ^{\pm}NN$ near threshold is also given. The $γd\toπ^-pp$ data are used to extract the $E_{0+}$ multipole and total crsoss sections of the reaction $γn\toπ^-p$ near threshold.

Partial-Wave Analysis of Nucleon-Nucleon Elastic Scattering Data

Energy-dependent and single-energy fits to the existing nucleon-nucleon database have been updated to incorporate recent measurements. The fits cover a region from threshold to 3 GeV, in the laboratory kinetic energy, for proton-proton scattering, with an upper limit of 1.3 GeV for neutron-proton scattering. Experiments carried out at the COSY-WASA and COSY-ANKE facilities have had a significant impact on the partial-wave solutions. Results are discussed in terms of both partial-wave and direct reconstruction amplitudes.

Generalization of the model-independent Laurent-Pietarinen single-channel pole-extraction formalism to multiple channels

A method to extract resonance pole information from single-channel partial-wave amplitudes based on a Laurent (Mittag-Leffler) expansion and conformal mapping techniques has recently been developed. This method has been applied to a number of reactions and provides a model-independent extraction procedure which is particularly useful in cases where a set of amplitudes is available only at descrete energies. This method has been generalized and applied to the case of a multi-channel fit, where several sets of amplitudes are analysed simultaneously. The importance of unitarity constraints is discussed. The final result provides a powerful, model-independent tool for analyzing partial-wave amplitudes of coupled or connected channels based entirely on the concepts of analyticity and unitarity.

Pole structure from energy-dependent and single-energy fits to $πN$ elastic scattering data

The pole structure of the current GW/SAID partial-wave analysis of elastic $πN$ scattering and $ηN$ production data is studied. Pole positions and residues are extracted from both the energy-dependent and single-energy fits, using two different methods. For the energy-dependent fits, both contour integration and a Laurent+Pietarinen approach are used. In the case of single-energy fits, the Laurent+Pietarinen approach is used. Errors are estimated and the two sets of results are compared to other recent and older fits to data.

Pole positions and residues from pion photoproduction using the Laurent+Pietarinen expansion method

We have applied a new approach to determine the pole positions and residues from pion photoproduction multipoles. The method is based on a Laurent expansion of the partial wave T-matrices, with a Pietarinen series representing the regular part of energy-dependent and single-energy photoproduction solutions. The method has been applied to multipole fits generated by the MAID and GWU/SAID groups. We show that the number and properties of poles extracted from photoproduction data correspond very well to results from $π$N elastic data and values cited by Particle Data Group (PDG). The photoproduction residues provide new information for the electromagnetic current at the pole position, which are independent of background parameterizations, as opposed to the Breit-Wigner representation. Finally, we present the photo-decay amplitudes from the current MAID and SAID solutions at the pole, for all four-star nucleon resonances below W=2 GeV.

Status of some P-wave baryon resonances and importance of inelastic channels

We analyze the current status of three P-wave baryon states $N(1710){1/ 2}^+$, $N(1900){3/2}^+$, and $Δ(1600){3/2}^+$ as given in the Review of Particles Physics (RPP). Since the evidence for a particle's existence is linked to its RPP "star" rating, we discuss its subjective present definition. We also present the accumulating evidence supporting these states and give our new "star" rating recommendations.

Introducing Pietarinen expansion method into single-channel pole extraction problem

We present a new approach to quantifying pole parameters of single-channel processes based on a Laurent expansion of partial-wave T-matrices in the vicinity of the real axis. Instead of using the conventional power-series description of the non-singular part of the Laurent expansion, we represent this part by a convergent series of Pietarinen functions. As the analytic structure of the non-singular part is usually very well known (physical cuts with branch points at inelastic thresholds, and unphysical cuts in the negative energy plane), we find that one Pietarinen series per cut represents the analytic structure fairly reliably. The number of terms in each Pietarinen series is determined by the quality of the fit. The method is tested in two ways: on a toy model constructed from two known poles, various background terms, and two physical cuts, and on several sets of realistic piN elastic energy-dependent partial-wave amplitudes (GWU/SAID - [1, 2], and Dubna-Mainz-Taipei - [3, 4]). We show that the method is robust and confident using up to three Pietarinen series, and is particularly convenient in fits to amplitudes, such as single-energy solutions, coming more directly from experiment; cases where the analytic structure of the regular part is apriori unknown.

Unified Chew-Mandelstam SAID analysis of pion photoproduction data

A unified description of single-pion photoproduction data, together with pion- and eta-hadroproduction data, has been achieved in a Chew-Mandelstam parametrization which is consistent with unitarity at the two-body level. Energy-dependent and single-energy partial wave analyses of pion photoproduction data have been performed and compared to previous SAID fits and multipoles from the Mainz and Bonn-Gatchina groups.

Comparing partial-wave amplitude parametrization with dynamical models of meson-nucleon scattering

Relationships between partial-wave amplitude parametrizations, in particular the Chew-Mandelstam approach, and dynamical coupled-channel models are established and investigated. A bare pole corresponding to the Delta(1232) resonance, found in a recent dynamical-model fit to pion- and omega-meson production reactions, compares closely to one found in a unitary multichannel partial-wave amplitude parametrization of SAID. The model dependence of the bare pole precludes a direct connection between the approaches but is suggestive that the dynamical description and the phenomenological parametrization are closely related.

Model dependence of single-energy fits to pion photoproduction data

Model dependence of multipole analysis has been explored through energy-dependent and single-energy fits to pion photoproduction data. The MAID energy-dependent solution has been used as input for an event generator producing realistic pseudo data. These were fitted using the SAID parametrization approach to determine single-energy and energy-dependent solutions over a range of lab photon energies from 200 to 1200 MeV. The resulting solutions were found to be consistent with the input amplitudes from MAID. Fits with a $χ$-squared per datum of unity or less were generally achieved. We discuss energy regions where consistent results are expected, and explore the sensitivity of fits to the number of included single- and double-polarization observables. The influence of Watson's theorem is examined in detail.

Updated SAID analysis of pion photoproduction data

Energy-dependent and single-energy fits to the existing pion photoproduction database have been updated to cover the region from threshold to 2.7 GeV in the laboratory photon energy. Revised resonance photo-decay couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations. The influence of recent measurements is displayed. Remaining problems and future approaches are discussed.

Toward a unified description of hadro- and photoproduction: S-wave pi- and eta-photoproduction amplitudes

The Chew-Mandelstam parameterization, which has been used extensively in the two-body hadronic sector, is generalized in this exploratory study to the electromagnetic sector by simultaneous fits to the pion- and eta-photoproduction S-wave multipole amplitudes for center-of-mass energies from the pion threshold through 1.61 GeV. We review the Chew-Mandelstam parameterization in detail to clarify the theoretical content of the SAID hadronic amplitude analysis and to place the proposed, generalized SAID electromagnetic amplitudes in the context of earlier employed parameterized forms. The parameterization is unitary at the two-body level, employing four hadronic channels and the gamma-N electromagnetic channel. We compare the resulting fit to the MAID parameterization and find qualitative agreement though, numerically, the solution is somewhat different. Applications of the extended parameterization to global fits of the photoproduction data and to global fits of the combined hadronic and photoproduction data are discussed.

Nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering to 3 GeV

A partial-wave analysis (PWA) of NN elastic scattering data has been completed. This analysis covers an expanded energy range, from threshold to a laboratory kinetic energy of 3 GeV, in order to include recent elastic pp polarized scattering measurements performed at SATURNE II. Results of the energy-dependent fit are compared with single-energy solutions and Saclay amplitudes obtained via the direct-reconstruction approach. We also comment on the status of Eps1 in the low-energy region.
