Polarimetric Reverberation Mapping in Medium-Band Filters

Earlier, we suggested the "reload" concept of the polarimetric reverberation mapping of active galactic nuclei (AGN), proposed for the first time more than 10 years ago. We have successfully tested this approach of reverberation mapping of the broad emission line on the galaxy Mrk 6. It was shown that such an idea allows one to look at the AGN central parsec structure literally in a new light. However, the method originally assumed the use of spectropolarimetric observations, expensive in terms of telescope time, and implemented on rare large telescopes. Currently, we propose an adaptation of the polarimetric reverberation mapping of broad lines in medium-band filters following the idea of the photometric reverberation mapping, when filters are selected so that their bandwidth is oriented to the broad line and the surrounding continuum near. In this paper, we present the progress status of such monitoring conducted jointly at the Special astrophysical observatory and Asiago Cima Ekar observatory (OAPd/INAF) with support from Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory (NAO), some first results for the most frequently observed AGNs Mrk 335, Mrk 509, and Mrk 817, and the discussion of the future perspectives of the campaign.

Observational insights on the origin of giant low surface brightness galaxies

Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) with dynamically cold stellar discs reaching the radius of 130 kpc challenge currently considered galaxy formation mechanisms. We analyse new deep long-slit optical spectroscopic observations, archival optical images and published HI and optical spectroscopic data for a sample of seven gLSBGs, for which we performed mass modelling and estimated the parameters of dark matter haloes assuming the Burkert dark matter density profile. Our sample is not homogeneous by morphology, parameters of stellar populations and total mass, however, six of seven galaxies sit on the high-mass extension of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. In UGC 1382 we detected a global counterrotation of the stellar high surface brightness (HSB) disc with respect to the extended LSB disc. In UGC 1922 with signatures of a possible merger, the gas counterrotation is seen in the inner disc. Six galaxies host active galactic nuclei, three of which have the estimated black hole masses substantially below those expected for their (pseudo-)bulge properties suggesting poor merger histories. Overall, the morphology, internal dynamics, and low star formation efficiency in the outer discs indicate that the three formation scenarios shape gLSBGs: (i) a two-stage formation when an HSB galaxy is formed first and then grows an LSB disc by accreting gas from an external supply; (ii) an unusual shallow and extended dark matter halo; (iii) a major merger with fine-tuned orbital parameters and morphologies of the merging galaxies.

Medium-band photometric reverberation mapping of AGNs at $0.1 < z < 0.8$. Techniques and sample

The most popular method of the broad-line region size estimation in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is the reverberation mapping based on measuring the time delay between the continuum flux and the flux in the emission lines. In our work, we apply the method of photometric reverberation mapping in mid-band filters, adapted for observations on the 1-m Zeiss-1000 telescope of Special Astrophysical Observatory of Russian Academy of Sciences, for the study of AGN with broad lines in the range of redshifts $0.1 < z < 0.8$. This paper provides a sample of 8 objects, describes the technique of observations and data processing for 2 studied objects to demonstrate the stability of the used method.

Photometric reverberation mapping of AGNs at 0.1 < z < 0.8: I. Observational technique

The improvement of the calibration relation for determining the size of the broad-line region from the observed optical luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is a necessary task to study fundamental parameters of distant AGNs such as mass of the central supermassive black hole. The most popular method of the BLR size estimation is the reverberation mapping based on measuring the time delay between the continuum flux and the flux in the emission lines. In our work, we apply the method of photometric reverberation mapping in medium-band filters, adapted for observations at the Zeiss-1000 telescope of the SAO RAS, for the study of AGN with broad lines in the range of redshifts $0.1 < z < 0.8$. This paper describes the technique of observations and data processing, provides a sample of objects and demonstrates the stability of the used method. As a preliminary result for 2MASX J08535955+7700543 at $z=0.1$ we have obtained time delay estimates of $τ(ICCF)=32.2^{\pm10.6}$ days and $τ(JAVELIN)=39.5_{-15.8}^{+23.0}$ days that are consistent with each other and also within the accuracy of the existing calibration relations.

A unique isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxy at D=1.9 Mpc

We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the unique isolated nearby dSph galaxy KKR25. The galaxy was resolved into stars with HST/WFPC2 including old red giant branch and red clump. We have constructed a model of the resolved stellar populations and measured the star formation rate and metallicity as function of time. The main star formation activity period occurred about 12.6 to 13.7 Gyr ago. These stars are mostly metal-poor, with a mean metallicity [Fe/H]\sim -1 to -1.6 dex. About 60 per cent of the total stellar mass was formed during this event. There are indications of intermediate age star formation in KKR25 between 1 and 4 Gyr with no significant signs of metal enrichment for these stars. Long-slit spectroscopy was carried out using the Russian 6-m telescope of the integrated starlight and bright individual objects in the galaxy. We have discovered a planetary nebula (PN) in KKR25. This is the first known PN in a dwarf spheroidal galaxy outside the Local Group. We have measured its oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H)=7.60+-0.07 dex and a radial velocity Vh=-79 km/s. We have analysed the stellar density distribution in the galaxy body. The galaxy has an exponential surface brightness profile with a central light depression. We discuss the evolutionary status of KKR25, which belongs to a rare class of very isolated dwarf galaxies with spheroidal morphology.

Groups of dwarf galaxies in the Local supercluster

We present a project on study of groups composed of dwarf galaxies only. We selected such structures using HyperLEDA and NED databases with visual inspection on SDSS images and on digital copy of POSS. The groups are characterized by size of few tens of kpc and line-of-sight velocity dispersion about 18 km/s. Our groups similar to associations of nearby dwarfs from Tully et al. (2006). This specific population of multiple dwarf galaxies such as IZw18 may contain significant amount of dark matter. It is very likely that we see them at the stage just before merging of its components.
