Quantum-Coherent Nanoscience

For the past three decades, nanoscience has widely affected many areas in physics, chemistry, and engineering, and has led to numerous fundamental discoveries as well as applications and products. Concurrently, quantum science and technology has developed into a cross-disciplinary research endeavour connecting these same areas and holds a burgeoning commercial promise. Although quantum physics dictates the behaviour of nanoscale objects, quantum coherence, which is central to quantum information, communication and sensing has not played an explicit role in much of nanoscience. This Review describes fundamental principles and practical applications of quantum coherence in nanoscale systems, a research area we call quantum-coherent nanoscience. We structure this manuscript according to specific degrees of freedom that can be quantum-coherently controlled in a given nanoscale system such as charge, spin, mechanical motion, and photons. We review the current state of the art and focus on outstanding challenges and opportunities unlocked by the merging of nanoscience and coherent quantum operations.

A combined first-principles and thermodynamic approach to M-Nitronyl Nitroxide (M=Co, Mn) spin helices

The properties of two molecular-based magnetic helices, composed of 3$d$ metal Co and Mn ions bridged by Nitronyl Nitroxide radicals, are investigated by density functional calculations. Their peculiar and distinctive magnetic behavior is here elucidated by a thorough description of their magnetic, electronic, and anisotropy properties. Metal ions are antiferromagnetically coupled with the radicals, leading to a ferrimagnetically ordered ground state. A strong metal-radical exchange coupling is found, about 44 meV and 48 meV for Co- and Mn-helices, respectively. The latter have also relevant next-nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn antiferromagnetic interactions (of $\sim$ 6 meV). Co-sites are characterized by non-collinear uniaxial anisotropies, whereas Mn-sites are rather isotropic. A key result pertains to the Co-helix: the microscopic picture resulting from density-functional calculations allows us to propose a spin Hamiltonian of increased complexity with respect to the commonly employed Ising Hamiltonian, suitable for the study of finite-temperature behavior, and that seems to clarify the puzzling scenario of multiple characteristic energy scales observed in experiments.

High Frequency EPR Spectra of [Fe8O2(OH)12(tacn)6]Br8. A Critical Appraisal of the Barrier for the Reorientation of the Magnetization in Single Molecule Magnets

A detailed multifrequency high field - high frequency EPR (95-285 GHz) study has been performed on the single-molecule magnet of formula [Fe8O2(OH)12(tacn)6]Br8 9H2O, where tacn=1,4,7-triazacyclononane. Polycrystalline powder spectra have allowed estimating the zero field splitting parameters up to the fourth order terms. The single crystal spectra have provided the principal directions of the magnetic anisotropy of the cluster. These results have been compared to an evaluation of the intra-cluster dipolar contribution to the magnetic anisotropy, suggesting that single ion anisotropy is mainly contributing to the magnetic anisotropy. The role of the transverse magnetic anisotropy in determining the height of the barrier for the reversal of the magnetization is also discussed.
