$Γ$-convergence and stochastic homogenisation of phase-transition functionals

In this paper we studythe asymptotics of singularly perturbed phase-transition functionals of the form \[ F_k(u)=\frac{1}{ε_k}\int_A f_k(x,u,ε_k\nabla u)\,dx\,, \] where $u \in [0,1]$ is a phase-field variable, $ε_k>0$ a singular-perturbation parameter, i.e., $ε_k \to 0$, as $k\to +\infty$, and the integrands $f_k$ are such that, for every $x$ and every $k$, $f_k(x,\cdot ,0)$ is a double well potential with zeros at 0 and 1. We prove that the functionals $F_k$ $Γ$-converge (up to subsequences) to a surface functional of the form \[ F_\infty(u)=\int_{S_u\cap A}f_\infty(x,ν_u)\,d\mathcal H^{n-1}\,,\] where $u\in BV(A;\{0,1\})$ and $f_\infty$ is characterised by the double limit of suitably scaled minimisation problems. Afterwards we extend our analysis to the setting of stochastic homogenisation and prove a $Γ$-convergence result for stationary random integrands.

A non-parametric Plateau problem with partial free boundary

We consider a Plateau problem in codimension $1$ in the non-parametric setting. A Dirichlet boundary datum is given only on part of the boundary $\partial Ω$ of a bounded convex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. Where the Dirichlet datum is not prescribed, we allow a free contact with the horizontal plane. We show existence of a solution, and prove regularity for the corresponding minimal surface. Finally we compare these solutions with the classical minimal surfaces of Meeks and Yau, and show that they are equivalent when the Dirichlet boundary datum is assigned in at most $2$ disjoint arcs of $\partial Ω$.

Gradient damage models for heterogeneous materials

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of phase-field functionals of Am brosio and Tortorelli type allowing for small-scale oscillations both in the volume and in the diffuse surface term. The functionals under examination can be interpreted as an instance of a static gradient damage model for heterogeneous materials. Depending on the mutual vanishing rate of the approximation and of the oscillation parameters, the effective behaviour of the model is fully characterised by means of Gamma-convergence.

Line-tension limits for line singularities and application to the mixed-growth case

We study variational models for dislocations in three dimensions in the line-tension scaling. We present a unified approach which allows to treat energies with subquadratic growth at infinity and other regularizations of the singularity near the dislocation lines. We show that the asymptotics via Gamma convergence is independent of the specific choice of the energy and of the regularization procedure.

$Γ$-convergence and stochastic homogenisation of singularly-perturbed elliptic functionals

We study the limit behaviour of singularly-perturbed elliptic functionals of the form \[ \mathcal F_k(u,v)=\int_A v^2\,f_k(x,\nabla u)dx+\frac{1}{\varepsilon_k}\int_A g_k(x,v,\varepsilon_k\nabla v)dx\,, \] where $u$ is a vector-valued Sobolev function, $v \in [0,1]$ a phase-field variable, and $\varepsilon_k>0$ a singular-perturbation parameter, i.e., $\varepsilon_k \to 0$, as $k\to +\infty$. Under mild assumptions on the integrands $f_k$ and $g_k$, we show that if $f_k$ grows superlinearly in the gradient-variable, then the functionals $\mathcal F_k$ $Γ$-converge (up to subsequences) to a brittle energy-functional, i.e., to a free-discontinuity functional whose surface integrand does not depend on the jump-amplitude of $u$. This result is achieved by providing explicit asymptotic formulas for the bulk and surface integrands which show, in particular, that volume and surface term in $\mathcal F_k$ decouple in the limit. The abstract $Γ$-convergence analysis is complemented by a stochastic homogenisation result for stationary random integrands.

Nonlinear three-dimensional derivation of line tension for dislocations: quadratic growth

In this paper we derive a line tension model for dislocations in 3d starting from a geometrically nonlinear elastic energy with quadratic growth. In the asymptotic analysis, as the amplitude of the Burgers vectors (proportional to the lattice spacing) tends to zero, we show that the elastic energy linearises and the line tension energy density, up to an overall constant rotation, is identified by the linearised cell problem formula given in [17].
