Manipulation of nonequilibrium spin dynamics of an ultracold gas in a moving optical lattice

The isolation and control of disparate degrees of freedom underpin quantum simulators. We advance the programmability of cold atom quantum simulators with a first realization of the dynamic interplay of spatial and spin degrees of freedom. We experimentally demonstrate that violent spatial evolutions tune long-lived coherent spin dynamics and develop a model of quantum spin-mixing incorporating the spatial evolution via time-dependent spin-spin interactions. Our results open new paths towards the simulation of quantum spin models with tunable interactions via tailored spatial dynamics.

Fast generation of spin squeezing via resonant spin-boson coupling

We propose protocols for the creation of useful entangled states in a system of spins collectively coupled to a bosonic mode, directly applicable to trapped-ion and cavity QED setups. The protocols use coherent manipulations of the spin-boson interactions naturally arising in these systems to prepare spin squeezed states exponentially fast in time. We demonstrate the robustness of the protocols by analyzing the effects of natural sources of decoherence in these systems and show their advantage compared to more standard slower approaches where entanglement is generated algebraically with time.

Engineering infinite-range SU($n$) interactions with spin-orbit-coupled fermions in an optical lattice

We study multilevel fermions in an optical lattice described by the Hubbard model with on site SU($n$)-symmetric interactions. We show that in an appropriate parameter regime this system can be mapped onto a spin model with all-to-all SU($n$)-symmetric couplings. Raman pulses that address internal spin states modify the atomic dispersion relation and induce spin-orbit coupling, which can act as a synthetic inhomogeneous magnetic field that competes with the SU($n$) exchange interactions. We investigate the mean-field dynamical phase diagram of the resulting model as a function of $n$ and different initial configurations that are accessible with Raman pulses. Consistent with previous studies for $n=2$, we find that for some initial states the spin model exhibits two distinct dynamical phases that obey simple scaling relations with $n$. Moreover, for $n>2$ we find that dynamical behavior can be highly sensitive to initial intra-spin coherences. Our predictions are readily testable in current experiments with ultracold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms.

A cavity-QED protocol for precise field sensing in the optical domain

In the context of quantum metrology, optical cavity-QED platforms have primarily been focused on the generation of entangled atomic spin states useful for next-generation frequency and time standards. Here, we report a complementary application: The use of optical cavities to generate non-classical states of light for electric field sensing below the standard quantum limit. We show that cooperative atom-light interactions in the strong collective coupling regime can be used to engineer generalized atom-light cat states which enable quantum enhanced sensing of small displacements of the cavity field even in the presence of photon loss. We demonstrate that metrological gains of 10-20 dB below the standard quantum limit are within reach for current cavity-QED systems operating with long-lived alkaline-earth atoms.

Quantum-Enhanced Sensing Based on Time Reversal of Nonlinear Dynamics

We experimentally demonstrate a nonlinear detection scheme exploiting time-reversal dynamics that disentangles continuous variable entangled states for feasible readout. Spin-exchange dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates is used as the nonlinear mechanism which not only generates entangled states but can also be time reversed by controlled phase imprinting. For demonstration of a quantum-enhanced measurement we construct an active atom SU(1,1) interferometer, where entangled state preparation and nonlinear readout both consist of parametric amplification. This scheme is capable of exhausting the quantum resource by detecting solely mean atom numbers. Controlled nonlinear transformations widen the spectrum of useful entangled states for applied quantum technologies.
