Gyrokinetic understanding of the edge pedestal transport driven by resonant magnetic perturbations in a realistic divertor geometry

Self-consistent simulations of neoclassical and electrostatic turbulent transport in a DIII-D H-mode edge plasma under resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) have been performed using the global total-f gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code XGC, in order to study density-pump out and electron heat confinement. The RMP field is imported from the extended magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) code M3D-C1, taking into account the linear two-fluid plasma response. With both neoclassical and turbulence physics considered together, the XGC simulation reproduces two key features of experimentally observed edge transport under RMPs: increased radial particle transport in the pedestal region that is sufficient to account for the experimental pump-out rate, and suppression of the electron heat flux in the steepest part of the edge pedestal. In the simulation, the density fluctuation amplitude of modes moving in the electron diamagnetic direction increases due to interaction with RMPs in the pedestal shoulder and outward, while the electron temperature fluctuation amplitude decreases.

Moment Preserving Constrained Resampling with Applications to Particle-in-Cell Methods

In simulations of partial differential equations using particle-in-cell (PIC) methods, it is often advantageous to resample the particle distribution function to increase simulation accuracy, reduce compute cost, and/or avoid numerical instabilities. We introduce an algorithm for particle resampling called Moment Preserving Contrained Resampling (MPCR). The general algorithm partitions the system space into smaller subsets and is designed to conserve any number of particle and grid quantities with a high degree of accuracy (i.e. machine accuracy). The resampling scheme can be integrated into any PIC code. The advantages of MPCR, including performance, accuracy, and stability, are presented by examining several numerical tests, including a use-case study in gyrokinetic fusion plasma simulations. The tests demonstrate that while the computational cost of MPCR is negligible compared to the nascent particle evolution in PIC methods, periodic particle resampling yields a significant improvement in the accuracy and stability of the results.

The nonlinear dispersion relation of geodesic acoustic modes

The energy input and frequency shift of geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) due to turbulence in tokamak edge plasmas are investigated in numerical two-fluid turbulence studies. Surprisingly, the turbulent GAM dispersion relation is qualitatively equivalent to the linear GAM dispersion but can have drastically enhanced group velocities. In up-down asymmetric geometry the energy input due to turbulent transport may favor the excitation of GAMs with one particular sign of the radial phase velocity relative to the magnetic drifts and may lead to pulsed GAM activity.
