Energy-based modeling for field-circuit coupling

This paper presents a generalized energy-based modeling framework extending recent formulations tailored for differential-algebraic equations. The proposed structure, inspired by the port-Hamiltonian formalism, ensures passivity, preserves the power balance, and facilitates the consistent interconnection of subsystems. A particular focus is put on low-frequency power applications in electrical engineering. Stranded, solid, and foil conductor models are investigated in the context of the eddy current problem. Each conductor model is shown to fit into the generalized energy-based structure, which allows their structure-preserving coupling with electrical circuits described by modified nodal analysis. Theoretical developments are validated through a numerical simulation of an oscillator circuit, demonstrating energy conservation in lossless scenarios and controlled dissipation when eddy currents are present. The applicability of the methodology towards engineering applications is studied through a numerical simulation of a nonlinear three-phase transformer.

Energy-adaptive Riemannian optimization on the Stiefel manifold

This paper addresses the numerical solution of nonlinear eigenvector problems such as the Gross-Pitaevskii and Kohn-Sham equation arising in computational physics and chemistry. These problems characterize critical points of energy minimization problems on the infinite-dimensional Stiefel manifold. To efficiently compute minimizers, we propose a novel Riemannian gradient descent method induced by an energy-adaptive metric. Quantified convergence of the methods is established under suitable assumptions on the underlying problem. A non-monotone line search and the inexact evaluation of Riemannian gradients substantially improve the overall efficiency of the method. Numerical experiments illustrate the performance of the method and demonstrates its competitiveness with well-established schemes.

Singular perturbation results for linear partial differential-algebraic equations of hyperbolic type

We consider constrained partial differential equations of hyperbolic type with a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$, which turn parabolic in the limit case, i.e., for $\varepsilon=0$. The well-posedness of the resulting systems is discussed and the corresponding solutions are compared in terms of the parameter $\varepsilon$. For the analysis, we consider the system equations as partial differential-algebraic equation based on the variational formulation of the problem. For a particular choice of the initial data, we reach first- and second-order estimates. For general initial data, lower-order estimates are proven and their optimality is shown numerically.

A multiscale method for heterogeneous bulk-surface coupling

In this paper, we construct and analyze a multiscale (finite element) method for parabolic problems with heterogeneous dynamic boundary conditions. As origin, we consider a reformulation of the system in order to decouple the discretization of bulk and surface dynamics. This allows us to combine multiscale methods on the boundary with standard Lagrangian schemes in the interior. We prove convergence and quantify explicit rates for low-regularity solutions, independent of the oscillatory behavior of the heterogeneities. As a result, coarse discretization parameters, which do not resolve the fine scales, can be considered. The theoretical findings are justified by a number of numerical experiments including dynamic boundary conditions with random diffusion coefficients.

Quantitative Anderson localization of Schrödinger eigenstates under disorder potentials

This paper concerns spectral properties of linear Schrödinger operators under oscillatory high-amplitude potentials on bounded domains. Depending on the degree of disorder, we prove the existence of spectral gaps amongst the lowermost eigenvalues and the emergence of exponentially localized states. We quantify the rate of decay in terms of geometric parameters that characterize the potential. The proofs are based on the convergence theory of iterative solvers for eigenvalue problems and their optimal local preconditioning by domain decomposition.

Splitting methods for constrained diffusion-reaction systems

We consider Lie and Strang splitting for the time integration of constrained partial differential equations with a nonlinear reaction term. Since such systems are known to be sensitive with respect to perturbations, the splitting procedure seems promising as we can treat the nonlinearity separately. This has some computational advantages, since we only have to solve a linear constrained system and a nonlinear ODE. However, Strang splitting suffers from order reduction which limits its efficiency. This is caused by the fact that the nonlinear subsystem produces inconsistent initial values for the constrained subsystem. The incorporation of an additional correction term resolves this problem without increasing the computational cost. Numerical examples including a coupled mechanical system illustrate the proven convergence results.
