The descendant colored Jones polynomials

We discuss two realizations of the colored Jones polynomials of a knot, one from an unnoticed work of the second author in 1994 on quantum R-matrices at roots of unity obtained from solutions of the pentagon identity, and another one from recent work of D. Zagier and the first author regarding the Refined Quantum Modularity Conjecture, more precisely, the mysterious top row of a matrix of conjectured knot invariants.

The Alexander polynomial as a universal invariant

Let $\mathsf{B}_1$ be the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[a^{\pm1},b]$ with the structure of a complex Hopf algebra induced from its interpretation as the algebra of regular functions on the affine linear algebraic group of complex invertible upper triangular 2-by-2 matrices of the form $\left( \begin{smallmatrix} a&b\\0&1 \end{smallmatrix}\right)$. We prove that the universal invariant of a long knot $K$ associated to $\mathsf{B}_1$ is the reciprocal of the canonically normalised Alexander polynomial $Δ_K(a)$. Given the fact that $\mathsf{B}_1$ admits a $q$-deformation $\mathsf{B}_q$ which underlies the (coloured) Jones polynomials, our result provides another conceptual interpretation for the Melvin--Morton--Rozansky conjecture proven by Bar-Nathan and Garoufalidis, and Garoufalidis and Lê.

Invariants of long knots

By using the notion of a rigid R-matrix in a monoidal category and the Reshetikhin--Turaev functor on the category of tangles, we review the definition of the associated invariant of long knots. In the framework of the monoidal categories of relations and spans over sets, by introducing racks associated with pointed groups, we illustrate the construction and the importance of consideration of long knots. Else, by using the restricted dual of algebras and Drinfeld's quantum double construction, we show that to any Hopf algebra $H$ with invertible antipode, one can associate a universal long knot invariant $Z_H(K)$ taking its values in the convolution algebra $((D(H))^o)^*$ of the restricted dual Hopf algebra $(D(H))^o$ of the quantum double $D(H)$ of $H$. That extends the known constructions of universal invariants previously considered mostly either in the case of finite dimensional Hopf algebras or by using some topological completions.

Matrix models from operators and topological strings, 2

The quantization of mirror curves to toric Calabi--Yau threefolds leads to trace class operators, and it has been conjectured that the spectral properties of these operators provide a non-perturbative realization of topological string theory on these backgrounds. In this paper, we find an explicit form for the integral kernel of the trace class operator in the case of local P1xP1, in terms of Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm. The matrix model associated to this integral kernel is an O(2) model, which generalizes the ABJ(M) matrix model. We find its exact planar limit, and we provide detailed evidence that its 1/N expansion captures the all genus topological string free energy on local P1xP1.

Evaluation of state integrals at rational points

Multi-dimensional state-integrals of products of Faddeev's quantum dilogarithms arise frequently in Quantum Topology, quantum Teichmüller theory and complex Chern--Simons theory. Using the quasi-periodicity property of the quantum dilogarithm, we evaluate 1-dimensional state-integrals at rational points and express the answer in terms of the Rogers dilogarithm, the cyclic (quantum) dilogarithm and finite state-sums at roots of unity. We illustrate our results with the evaluation of the state-integrals of the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots at rational points.

On realizations of Pachner moves in 4D

The combinatorial structure of Pachner moves in four dimensions is analyzed in the case of a distinguished move of the type (3,3) and few examples of solutions are reviewed. In particular, solutions associated to Pontryagin self-dual locally compact abelian groups are characterized with remarkable symmetry properties which, in the case of finite abelian groups, give rise to a simple model of combinatorial TQFT with corners in four dimensions.

Operators from mirror curves and the quantum dilogarithm

Mirror manifolds to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds are encoded in algebraic curves. The quantization of these curves leads naturally to quantum-mechanical operators on the real line. We show that, for a large number of local del Pezzo Calabi-Yau threefolds, these operators are of trace class. In some simple geometries, like local P2, we calculate the integral kernel of the corresponding operators in terms of Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm. Their spectral traces are expressed in terms of multi-dimensional integrals, similar to the state-integrals appearing in three-manifold topology, and we show that they can be evaluated explicitly in some cases. Our results provide further verifications of a recent conjecture which gives an explicit expression for the Fredholm determinant of these operators, in terms of enumerative invariants of the underlying Calabi-Yau threefolds.

The Yang-Baxter relation and gauge invariance

Starting from a quantum dilogarithm over a Pontryagin self-dual LCA group $A$, we construct an operator solution of the Yang-Baxter equation generalizing the solution of the Faddeev-Volkov model. Based on a specific choice of a subgroup $B\subset A$ and by using the Weil transformation, we also give a new non-operator interpretation of the Yang-Baxter relation. That allows us to construct a lattice QFT-model of IRF-type with gauge invariance under independent $B$-translations of local `spin' variables.

A simple model of 4d-TQFT

We show that, associated with any complex root of unity $ω$, there exists a particularly simple 4d-TQFT model $M_ω$ defined on the cobordism category of Delta complexes. For an oriented closed 4-manifold $X$ of Euler characteristic $χ(X)$, it is conjectured that the quantity $N^{3χ(X)/2}M_ω(X)$, where $N$ is the order of $ω$, takes only finitely many values as a function of $ω$. In particular, it is equal to 1 for $S^4$, $\left(3+(-1)^{N}\right)/2$ for $S^2\times S^2$, and $N^{-1/2}\sum_{k=1}^Nω^{k^2}$ for $\mathbb{C} P^2$.

Complex Quantum Chern-Simons

We lay down a general framework for how to construct a Topological Quantum Field Theory $Z_A$ defined on shaped triangulations of orientable 3-manifolds from any Pontryagin self-dual locally compact abelian group $A$. The partition function for a triangulated manifold is given by a state integral over the LCA $A$ of a certain combinations of functions which satisfy Faddeev's operator five term relation. In the cases where all elements of the LCA $A$ are divisible by 2 and it has a subgroup $B$ whose Pontryagin dual is isomorphic to $A/B$, this TQFT has an alternative formulation in terms of the space of sections of a line bundle over $(A/B)^{2}$. We apply this to the LCA $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ and obtain a TQFT, which we show is Quantum Chern-Simons theory at level $N$ for the complex gauge group $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ by the use of geometric quantization.

From state integrals to q-series

It is well-known to the experts that multi-dimensional state integrals of products of Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm which arise in Quantum Topology can be written as finite sums of products of basic hypergeometric series in q=e^{2πiτ} and \tilde{q}=e^{-2πi/τ}. We illustrate this fact by giving a detailed proof for a family of one-dimensional integrals which includes state-integral invariants of 4_1 and 5_2 knots.

A TQFT of Turaev-Viro type on shaped triangulations

A shaped triangulation is a finite triangulation of an oriented pseudo three manifold where each tetrahedron carries dihedral angles of an ideal hyberbolic tetrahedron. To each shaped triangulation, we associate a quantum partition function in the form of an absolutely convergent state integral which is invariant under shaped 3-2 Pachner moves and invariant with respect to shape gauge transformations generated by total dihedral angles around internal edges through the Neumann-Zagier Poisson bracket. Similarly to Turaev-Viro theory, the state variables live on edges of the triangulation but take their values on the whole real axis. The tetrahedral weight functions are composed of three hyperbolic gamma functions in a way that they enjoy a manifest tetrahedral symmetry. We conjecture that for shaped triangulations of closed 3-manifolds, our partition function is twice the absolute value squared of the partition function of Techmüller TQFT defined by Andersen and Kashaev. This is similar to the known relationship between the Turaev-Viro and the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invarints of three manifolds. We also discuss interpretations of our construction in terms of three-dimensional supersymmetric field theories related to triangulated three-dimensional manifolds.

Tetrahedral forms in monoidal categories and 3-manifold invariants

We introduce systems of objects and operators in linear monoidal categories called $\hat Ψ$-systems. A $\hat Ψ$-system satisfying several additional assumptions gives rise to a topological invariant of triples (a closed oriented 3-manifold $M$, a principal bundle over $M$, a link in $M$). This construction generalizes the quantum dilogarithmic invariant of links appearing in the original formulation of the volume conjecture. We conjecture that all quantum groups at odd roots of unity give rise to $\hat Ψ$-systems and we verify this conjecture in the case of the Borel subalgebra of quantum $sl_2$.
