General Renewal Equations Motivated by Biology and Epidemiology

We present a unified framework ensuring well posedness and providing stability estimates to a class of Initial Boundary Value Problems for renewal equations comprising a variety of biological or epidemiological models. This versatility is achieved considering fairly general -- possibly non linear and/or non local -- interaction terms, allowing both low regularity assumptions and independent variables with or without a boundary. In particular, these results also apply, for instance, to a model for the spreading of a Covid like pandemic or other epidemics. Further applications are shown to be covered by the present setting.

On a Hyperbolic-Parabolic Parasitoid-Parasite System: Well Posedness and Control

We develop a time and space dependent predator-prey model. The predators' equation is a non local hyperbolic balance law, while the diffusion of prey obeys a parabolic equation, so that predators "hunt" for prey, while prey diffuse. A control term allows to describe the use of predators as parasitoids to limit the growth of prey-parasites. The general well posedness and stability results here obtained ensure the existence of optimal pest control strategies, as discussed through some numerical integrations. The specific example we have in mind is that of Trichopria drosophilae used to fight against the spreading of Drosophila suzukii.

On The Microscopic Modeling of Vehicular Traffic on General Networks

We introduce a formalism to deal with the microscopic modeling of vehicular traffic on a road network. Traffic on each road is uni-directional, and the dynamics of each vehicle is described by a Follow-the-Leader model. From a mathematical point of view, this amounts to define a system of ordinary differential equations on an arbitrary network. A general existence and uniqueness result is provided, while priorities at junctions are shown to hinder the stability of solutions. We investigate the occurrence of the Braess paradox in a time-dependent setting within this model. The emergence of Nash equilibria in a non-stationary situation results in the appearance of Braess type paradoxes, and this is supported by numerical simulations.

Modeling Crowd Dynamics through Hyperbolic - Elliptic Equations

Inspired by the works of Hughes [17, 18], we formalize and prove the well posedness of a hyperbolic--elliptic system whose solutions describe the dynamics of a moving crowd. The resulting model is here shown to be well posed and the time of evacuation from a bounded environment is proved to be finite. This model also provides a microscopic description of the individuals' behaviors.

Optimization in Structure Population Models through the Escalator Boxcar Train

The Escalator Boxcar Train (EBT) is a tool widely used in the study of balance laws motivated by structure population dynamics. This paper proves that the approximate solutions defined through the EBT converge to exact solutions. Moreover, this method is rigorously shown to be effective also in computing optimal controls. As preliminary results, the well posedness of classes of PDEs and of ODEs comprising various biological models is also obtained. A specific application to welfare policies illustrates the whole procedure.

Uniqueness of the $1$D Compressible to Incompressible Limit

Consider two compressible immiscible fluids in 1D in the isentropic approximation. The first fluid is surrounded and in contact with the second one. As the Mach number of the first fluid vanishes, the coupled dynamics of the two fluids results as the compressible to incompressible limit and is known to satisfy an ODE--PDE system. Below, a characterization of this limit is provided, ensuring its uniqueness.

$\mathbf{BV}$ Solutions to $1$D Isentropic Euler Equations in the Zero Mach Number Limit

Two compressible immiscible fluids in 1D and in the isentropic approximation are considered. The first fluid is surrounded and in contact with the second one. As the Mach number of the first fluid vanishes, we prove the rigorous convergence for the fully non--linear compressible to incompressible limit of the coupled dynamics of the two fluids. A key role is played by a suitably refined wave front tracking algorithm, which yields precise $\mathbf{BV}$, $\mathbf{L}^1$ and weak* convergence estimates, either uniform or explicitly dependent on the Mach number.

Isentropic Fluid Dynamics in a Curved Pipe

In this paper we study isentropic flow in a curved pipe. We focus on the consequences of the geometry of the pipe on the dynamics of the flow. More precisely, we present the solution of the general Cauchy problem for isentropic fluid flow in an arbitrarily curved, piecewise smooth pipe. We consider initial data in the subsonic regime, with small total variation about a stationary solution. The proof relies on the front-tracking method and is based on [1].

NonLocal Systems of Balance Laws in Several Space Dimensions with Applications to Laser Technolog

For a class of systems of nonlinear and nonlocal balance laws in several space dimensions, we prove the local in time existence of solutions and their continuous dependence on the initial datum. The choice of this class is motivated by a new model devoted to the description of a metal plate being cut by a laser beam. Using realistic parameters, solutions to this model obtained through numerical integrations meet qualitative properties of real cuts. Moreover, the class of equations considered comprises a model describing the dynamics of solid particles along a conveyor belt.

Rigorous Estimates on Balance Laws in Bounded Domains

The initial-boundary value problem for a general balance law in a bounded domain is proved to be well posed. Indeed, we show the existence of an entropy solution, its uniqueness and its Lipschitz continuity as a function of time, of the initial datum and of the boundary datum. The proof follows the general lines in Bardos, Leroux and Nédélec (1979), striving to provide a rigorous treatment and detailed references.

A Mixed ODE-PDE Model for Vehicular Traffic

We present a traffic flow model consisting of a gluing between the Lighthill-Whitham and Richards macroscopic model with a first order microscopic follow the leader model. The basic analytical properties of this model are investigated. Existence and uniqueness are proved, as well as the basic estimates on the dependence of solutions from the initial data. Moreover, numerical integrations show some qualitative features of the model, in particular the transfer of information among regions where the different models are used.

A Traffic Model Aware of Real Time Data

Nowadays, traffic monitoring systems have access to real time data, e.g. through GPS devices. We propose a new traffic model able to take into account these data and, hence, able to describe the effects of unpredictable accidents. The well posedness of this model is proved and numerical integrations show qualitative features of the resulting solutions. As a further motivation for the use of real time data, we show that the inverse problem for the Lighthill-Whitam and Richards (LWR) model is ill posed.

Differential Equations Modeling Crowd Interactions

Nonlocal conservation laws are used to describe various realistic instances of crowd behaviors. First, a basic analytic framework is established through an "ad hoc" well posedness theorem for systems of nonlocal conservation laws in several space dimensions interacting non locally with a system of ODEs. Numerical integrations show possible applications to the interaction of different groups of pedestrians, and also with other "agents".

Hyperbolic predators vs parabolic preys

We present a nonlinear predator-prey system consisting of a nonlocal conservation law for predators coupled with a parabolic equation for preys. The drift term in the predators' equation is a nonlocal function of the prey density, so that the movement of predators can be directed towards region with high prey density. Moreover, Lotka-Volterra type right hand sides describe the feeding. A theorem ensuring existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence of weak solutions and various stability estimates is proved, in any space dimension. Numerical integrations show a few qualitative features of the solutions.

Stability and Optimization in Structured Population Models on Graphs

We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, continuous dependence from the initial datum and stability with respect to the boundary condition in a class of initial--boundary value problems for systems of balance laws. The particular choice of the boundary condition allows to comprehend models with very different structures. In particular, we consider a juvenile-adult model, the problem of the optimal mating ratio and a model for the optimal management of biological resources. The stability result obtained allows to tackle various optimal management/control problems, providing sufficient conditions for the existence of optimal choices/controls.

A Numerical Approach to Scalar Nonlocal Conservation Laws

We address the study of a class of 1D nonlocal conservation laws from a numerical point of view. First, we present an algorithm to numerically integrate them and prove its convergence. Then, we use this algorithm to investigate various analytical properties, obtaining evidence that usual properties of standard conservation laws fail in the nonlocal setting. Moreover, on the basis of our numerical integrations, we are lead to conjecture the convergence of the nonlocal equation to the local ones, although no analytical results are, to our knowledge, available in this context.

A Class of Non-Local Models for Pedestrian Traffic

We present a new class of macroscopic models for pedestrian flows. Each individual is assumed to move towards a fixed target, deviating from the best path according to the instantaneous crowd distribution. The resulting equation is a conservation law with a nonlocal flux. Each equation in this class generates a Lipschitz semigroup of solutions and is stable with respect to the functions and parameters defining it. Moreover, key qualitative properties such as the boundedness of the crowd density are proved. Specific models are presented and their qualitative properties are shown through numerical integrations.

Nonlocal Crowd Dynamics Models for several Populations

This paper develops the basic analytical theory related to some recently introduced crowd dynamics models. Where well posedness was known only locally in time, it is here extended to all of $\reali^+$. The results on the stability with respect to the equations are improved. Moreover, here the case of several populations is considered, obtaining the well posedness of systems of multi-D non-local conservation laws. The basic analytical tools are provided by the classical Kruzkov theory of scalar conservation laws in several space dimensions.

An Analytical Framework to Describe the Interactions Between Individuals and a Continuum

We consider a discrete set of individual agents interacting with a continuum. Examples might be a predator facing a huge group of preys, or a few shepherd dogs driving a herd of sheeps. Analytically, these situations can be described through a system of ordinary differential equations coupled with a scalar conservation law in several space dimensions. This paper provides a complete well posedness theory for the resulting Cauchy problem. A few applications are considered in detail and numerical integrations are provided.
