A Z3-symmetric Quantum Chromodynamics

We propose a description of colour triplets of quarks by entangled Z3-graded Lee-Wick type fields, one with real mass and the two remaining ones with mutually conjugate complex masses. This is obtained by attributing colour degrees of freedom to six Pauli spinors, three endowed with colours and three with anti-colours, which are unitrd into one 12-component generalized "coloured Dirac spinor". The so entangled triplet of quark fields satisfies a generalized Dirac equation, with generalized 12x1é gamma-matrices acting on 12-component coloured spinors. The sixth order dispersion relations lead to solutions suitably vanishing in asymptotic region, exhibiting the well established confinement property of coloured quarks' degrees of freedom. We show how one can construct certain cubic combinations of those solutions in a way that cansels the damping factors, producing freely propagating functions.

Astronomy in the Islamic World: a European Perspective

Mathematical and astronomical achievements of the Islamic World during its golden era are briefly exposed. Thie article is based on the invited talk delivered remotely at the ICRANet-Isfahan Astronomical meeting, November 2-5, 2021, which, in turn, reproduces major parts of one of the chapters of my book ``Our Celestial Clockwork'', published recently (2021) by the World Scientific.

Brans-Dicke unimodular gravity

We propose a unimodular version of the Brans-Dicke theory designed with a constrained Lagrangian formulation. The resulting field equations are traceless. The vacuum solutions in the cosmological background reproduce the corresponding solutions of the usual Brans-Dicke theory but with a cosmological constant term. A perturbative analysis of the scalar modes is performed and stable and unstable configurations appear in contrast with the Brans-Dicke case for which only stable configurations occur. On the other hand, tensorial modes in this theory remains the same as in the traditional Brans-Dicke theory.

Ternary generalization of Heisenberg's Algebra

A concise study of ternary and cubic algebras with $Z_3$ grading is presented. We discuss some underlying ideas leading to the conclusion that the discrete symmetry group of permutations of three objects, $S_3$, and its abelian subgroup $Z_3$ may play an important role in quantum physics. We show then how most of important algebras with $Z_2$ grading can be generalized with ternary composition laws combined with a $Z_3$ grading. We investigate in particular a ternary, $Z_3$-graded generalization of the Heisenberg algebra. It turns out that introducing a non-trivial cubic root of unity, $j = e^{\frac{2 πi}{3}}$, one can define two types of creation operators instead of one, accompanying the usual annihilation operator. The two creation operators are non-hermitian, but they are mutually conjugate. Together, the three operators form a ternary algebra, and some of their cubic combinations generate the usual Heisenberg algebra. An analogue of Hamiltonian operator is constructed by analogy with the usual harmonic oscillator, and some properties of its eigenfunctions are briefly discussed.

Towards a $Z_3$-graded approach to quarks' symmetries

Colour $SU(3)$ group is an exact symmetry of Quantum Chromodynamics, which describes strong interactions between quarks and gluons. Supplemented by two internal symmetries, $SU(2)$ and $U(1)$, it serves as the internal symmetry of the Standard Model, describing as well the electroweak interactions of quarks and leptons. The colour$SU(3)$ symmetry is exact, while two other symmetries are broken by means of the Higgs-Kibble mechanism. The three colours and fractional quarks charges with values $1/3$ and $2/3$ suggest that the cyclic group $Z_3$ may play a crucial role in quark field dynamics. In this paper we consequently apply the $Z_3$ symmetry to field multiplets describing colour quark fields. Generalized Dirac equation for coloured $12$-component spinors is introduced and its properties are discussed. Imposing $Z_3$-graded Lorentz and Poincaré covariance leads to enlargement of quark fields multiplets and incorporates additional $Z_2 \times Z_3$ symmetry which leads to the appearance of three generations (families) of distinct quark doublets.

Time-reparametrization invariance and Hamilton-Jacobi approach to the cosmological sigma-model

The construction of physical models with local time-reparametrization invariance is reviewed. Negative-energy contributions to the hamiltonian are shown to be crucial for the realization of this reparametrization symmetry. The covariant formulation of the dynamics is used to develop a time and gauge invariant Hamilton-Jacobi theory. This formalism is applied to solve for the cosmology of a homogeneous universe of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker type. After a discussion of empty universes, the FLRW theory is extended with homogeneous scalar fields generically described by a $\sg$-model on some scalar manifold. An explicit gauge-invariant solution is constructed for the non-linear O(N)-models.

Interaction of Flexural Phonons with Electrons in Graphene: A Generalized Dirac Equation in Corrugated Surfaces

A generalized Dirac equation is derived in order to describe charge carriers moving in corrugated graphene, which is the case for temperatures above 10°K due to the presence of flexural phonons. Such interaction is taken into account by considering an induced metric, in the same spirit as the general relativity approach for the description of fermionic particle moving in a curved space-time. The resulting equation allows to include in a natural way the presence of other phonon branches as well as an external electromagnetic field. It also predicts non-linear effects which are not present in the usual vector potential approximation used in most of publications on the subject, as well as the possibility of controlling electronic conductivity using pure sinusoidal strain fields. The non-linear terms are important at high temperatures, and can also lead to interesting effects, like e.g. resonances between flexural phonons and external electromagnetic fields.

Spacetime Symmetries and Z_3-graded Quark Algebra

We investigate certain $Z_3$-graded associative algebras with cubic $Z_3$-invariant constitutive relations. The invariant forms on finite algebras of this type are given in the low dimensional cases with two or three generators. We show how the Lorentz symmetry represented by the $SL(2, {\bf C})$ group emerges naturally without any notion of Minkowskian metric, just as the invariance group of the $Z_3$-graded cubic algebra and its constitutive relations. Its representation is found in terms of Pauli matrices. The relationship of this construction with the operators defining quark states is also considered, and a third-order analogue of the Klein-Gordon equation is introduced. Cubic products of its solutions may provide the basis for the familiar wave functions satisfying Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations.

Cosmological model with Born-Infeld type scalar field

The non-abelian generalization of the Born-Infeld non-linear lagrangian is extended to the non-commutative geometry of matrices on a manifold. In this case not only the usual SU(n) gauge fields appear, but also a natural generalization of the multiplet of scalar Higgs fields, with the double-well potential as a first approximation. The matrix realization of non-commutative geometry provides a natural framework in which the notion of a determinant can be easily generalized and used as the lowest-order term in a gravitational lagrangian of a new kind. As a result, we obtain a Born-Infeld-like lagrangian as a root of sufficiently high order of a combination of metric, gauge potentials and the scalar field interactions. We then analyze the behavior of cosmological models based on this lagrangian. It leads to primordial inflation with varying speed, with possibility of early deceleration ruled by the relative strength of the Higgs field.
