Hyperbolic Lattice for Scalar Field Theory in AdS$_3$

We construct a tessellation of AdS$_3$, by extending the equilateral triangulation of AdS$_2$ on the Poincaré disk based on the $(2,3,7)$ triangle group, suitable for studying strongly coupled phenomena and the AdS/CFT correspondence. A Hamiltonian form conducive to the study of dynamics and quantum computation is presented. We show agreement between lattice calculations and analytic results for the free scalar theory and find evidence of a second order critical transition for $ϕ^4$ theory using Monte Carlo simulations. Applications of this AdS Hamiltonian formulation to real time evolution and quantum computing are discussed.

Near-conformal dynamics in a chirally broken system

Composite Higgs models must exhibit very different dynamics from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) regardless whether they describe the Higgs boson as a dilatonlike state or a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. Large separation of scales and large anomalous dimensions are frequently desired by phenomenological models. Mass-split systems are well-suited for composite Higgs models because they are governed by a conformal fixed point in the ultraviolet but are chirally broken in the infrared. In this work we use lattice field theory calculations with domain wall fermions to investigate a system with four light and six heavy flavors. We demonstrate how a nearby conformal fixed point affects the properties of the four light flavors that exhibit chiral symmetry breaking in the infrared. Specifically we describe hyperscaling of dimensionful physical quantities and determine the corresponding anomalous mass dimension. We obtain $y_m=1+γ^*= 1.47(5)$ suggesting that $N_f=10$ lies inside the conformal window. Comparing the low energy spectrum to predictions of dilaton chiral perturbation theory, we observe excellent agreement which supports the expectation that the 4+6 mass-split system exhibits near-conformal dynamics with a relatively light $0^{++}$ isosinglet scalar.

Lattice Gauge Theory for a Quantum Computer

The quantum link~\cite{Brower:1997ha} Hamiltonian was introduced two decades ago as an alternative to Wilson's Euclidean lattice QCD with gauge fields represented by bi-linear fermion/anti-fermion operators. When generalized this new microscopic representation of lattice field theories is referred as {\tt D-theory}~\cite{Brower:2003vy}. Recast as a Hamiltonian in Minkowski space for real time evolution, D-theory leads naturally to quantum Qubit algorithms. Here to explore digital quantum computing for gauge theories, the simplest example of U(1) compact QED on triangular lattice is defined and gauge invariant kernels for the Suzuki-Trotter expansions are expressed as Qubit circuits capable of being tested on the IBM-Q and other existing Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) hardware. This is a modest step in exploring the quantum complexity of D-theory to guide future applications to high energy physics and condensed matter quantum field theories.

Quantum Finite Elements for Lattice Field Theory

Viable non-perturbative methods for lattice quantum field theories on curved manifolds are difficult. By adapting features from the traditional finite element methods (FEM) and Regge Calculus, a new simplicial lattice Quantum Finite Element (QFE) Lagrangian is constructed for fields on a smooth Riemann manifold. To reach the continuum limit additional counter terms must be constructed to cancel the ultraviolet distortions. This is tested by the comparison of phi 4-th theory at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point with the exact Ising (c =1/2) CFT on a 2D Riemann sphere. The Dirac equation is also constructed on a simplicial lattice approximation to a Riemann manifold by introducing a lattice vierbein and spin connection on each link. Convergence of the QFE Dirac equation is tested against the exact solution for the 2D Riemann sphere. Future directions and applications to Conformal Field Theories are suggested.

Strongly interacting dynamics and the search for new physics at the LHC

We present results for the spectrum of a strongly interacting SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f = 8$ light fermions in the fundamental representation. Carrying out non-perturbative lattice calculations at the lightest masses and largest volumes considered to date, we confirm the existence of a remarkably light singlet scalar particle. We explore the rich resonance spectrum of the 8-flavor theory in the context of the search for new physics beyond the standard model at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Connecting our results to models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, we estimate the vector resonance mass to be about 2 TeV with a width of roughly 450 GeV, and predict additional resonances with masses below ~3 TeV.

Direct Detection of Stealth Dark Matter through Electromagnetic Polarizability

We calculate the spin-independent scattering cross section for direct detection that results from the electromagnetic polarizability of a composite scalar baryon dark matter candidate -- "Stealth Dark Matter", that is based on a dark SU(4) confining gauge theory. In the nonrelativistic limit, electromagnetic polarizability proceeds through a dimension-7 interaction leading to a very small scattering cross section for dark matter with weak scale masses. This represents a lower bound on the scattering cross section for composite dark matter theories with electromagnetically charged constituents. We carry out lattice calculations of the polarizability for the lightest baryons in SU(3) and SU(4) gauge theories using the background field method on quenched configurations. We find the polarizabilities of SU(3) and SU(4) to be comparable (within about 50%) normalized to the baryon mass, which is suggestive for extensions to larger SU(N) groups. The resulting scattering cross sections with a xenon target are shown to be potentially detectable in the dark matter mass range of about 200-700 GeV, where the lower bound is from the existing LUX constraint while the upper bound is the coherent neutrino background. Significant uncertainties in the cross section remain due to the more complicated interaction of the polarizablity operator with nuclear structure, however the steep dependence on the dark matter mass, $1/m_B^6$, suggests the observable dark matter mass range is not appreciably modified. We briefly highlight collider searches for the mesons in the theory as well as the indirect astrophysical effects that may also provide excellent probes of stealth dark matter.

Holographic Approach to Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small-x at High Energy

We focus on a holographic approach to DIS at small-x in high energy where scattering is dominated by exchanging a Reggeized Graviton in $AdS_5$. We emphasize the importance of confinement, which corresponds to a deformation of $AdS_5$ geometry in the IR. This approach provides an excellent fit to the combined HERA data at small $x$. We also discuss the connection of Pomeron/Odderon intercepts in the conformal limit with anomalous dimensions in strong coupling.

Multiscale Monte Carlo equilibration: Pure Yang-Mills theory

We present a multiscale thermalization algorithm for lattice gauge theory, which enables efficient parallel generation of uncorrelated gauge field configurations. The algorithm combines standard Monte Carlo techniques with ideas drawn from real space renormalization group and multigrid methods. We demonstrate the viability of the algorithm for pure Yang-Mills gauge theory for both heat bath and hybrid Monte Carlo evolution, and show that it ameliorates the problem of topological freezing up to controllable lattice spacing artifacts.

Stealth Dark Matter: Dark scalar baryons through the Higgs portal

We present a new model of "Stealth Dark Matter": a composite baryonic scalar of an $SU(N_D)$ strongly-coupled theory with even $N_D \geq 4$. All mass scales are technically natural, and dark matter stability is automatic without imposing an additional discrete or global symmetry. Constituent fermions transform in vector-like representations of the electroweak group that permit both electroweak-breaking and electroweak-preserving mass terms. This gives a tunable coupling of stealth dark matter to the Higgs boson independent of the dark matter mass itself. We specialize to $SU(4)$, and investigate the constraints on the model from dark meson decay, electroweak precision measurements, basic collider limits, and spin-independent direct detection scattering through Higgs exchange. We exploit our earlier lattice simulations that determined the composite spectrum as well as the effective Higgs coupling of stealth dark matter in order to place bounds from direct detection, excluding constituent fermions with dominantly electroweak-breaking masses. A lower bound on the dark baryon mass $m_B \gtrsim 300$ GeV is obtained from the indirect requirement that the lightest dark meson not be observable at LEP II. We briefly survey some intriguing properties of stealth dark matter that are worthy of future study, including: collider studies of dark meson production and decay; indirect detection signals from annihilation; relic abundance estimates for both symmetric and asymmetric mechanisms; and direct detection through electromagnetic polarizability, a detailed study of which will appear in a companion paper.

Strong Coupling Expansion for the Conformal Pomeron/Odderon Trajectories

From the perspective of AdS/CFT the Pomeron is identified with a Reggeized Graviton, while the Odderons correspond to Reggeized anti-symmetric $AdS_5$ Kalb-Ramond tensor-fields. In this paper, we consider the strong coupling expansion of the dimension of the leading twist operators dual to these Regge trajectories, $Δ(j)$, to determine its analytic continuation in $j$ beyond the diffusion limit. In particular, we compute the strong coupling expansion of the intercept to order $λ^{-3}$, where $λ$ is the t'Hooft coupling, for both the Pomeron, which is $C=+1$ crossing-even, and the "Odderons", which are the leading $C=-1$ crossing-odd Regge singularities. We discuss the spectral curves of the class of single-trace operators to which these string modes couple.

Composite bosonic baryon dark matter on the lattice: SU(4) baryon spectrum and the effective Higgs interaction

We present the spectrum of baryons in a new SU(4) gauge theory with fundamental fermion constituents. The spectrum of these bosonic baryons is of significant interest for composite dark matter theories. Here, we compare the spectrum and properties of SU(3) and SU(4) baryons, and then compute the dark-matter direct detection cross section via Higgs boson exchange for TeV-scale composite dark matter arising from a confining SU(4) gauge sector. Comparison with the latest LUX results leads to tight bounds on the fraction of the constituent-fermion mass that may arise from electroweak symmetry breaking. Lattice calculations of the dark matter mass spectrum and the Higgs-dark matter coupling are performed on quenched $16^{3} \times 32$, $32^{3} \times 64$, $48^{3} \times 96$, and $64^{3} \times128$ lattices with three different lattice spacings, using Wilson fermions with moderate to heavy pseudoscalar meson masses. Our results lay a foundation for future analytic and numerical study of composite baryonic dark matter.

Improved Lattice Radial Quantization

Lattice radial quantization was proposed in a recent paper by Brower, Fleming and Neuberger[1] as a nonperturbative method especially suited to numerically solve Euclidean conformal field theories. The lessons learned from the lattice radial quantization of the 3D Ising model on a longitudinal cylinder with 2D Icosahedral cross-section suggested the need for an improved discretization. We consider here the use of the Finite Element Methods(FEM) to descretize the universally-equivalent $ϕ^4$ Lagrangian on $\mathbb R \times \mathbb S^2$. It is argued that this lattice regularization will approach the exact conformal theory at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in the continuum. Numerical tests are underway to support this conjecture.

The Möbius Domain Wall Fermion Algorithm

We present a review of the properties of generalized domain wall Fermions, based on a (real) Möbius transformation on the Wilson overlap kernel, discussing their algorithmic efficiency, the degree of explicit chiral violations measured by the residual mass ($m_{res}$) and the Ward-Takahashi identities. The Möbius class interpolates between Shamir's domain wall operator and Boriçi's domain wall implementation of Neuberger's overlap operator without increasing the number of Dirac applications per conjugate gradient iteration. A new scaling parameter ($α$) reduces chiral violations at finite fifth dimension ($L_s$) but yields exactly the same overlap action in the limit $L_s \rightarrow \infty$. Through the use of 4d Red/Black preconditioning and optimal tuning for the scaling $α(L_s)$, we show that chiral symmetry violations are typically reduced by an order of magnitude at fixed $L_s$. At large $L_s$ we argue that the observed scaling for $m_{res} = O(1/L_s)$ for Shamir is replaced by $m_{res} = O(1/L_s^2)$ for the properly tuned Möbius algorithm with $α= O(L_s)$

Approaching Conformality with Ten Flavors

We present first results for lattice simulations, on a single volume, of the low-lying spectrum of an SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory with ten light fermions in the fundamental representation. Fits to the fermion mass dependence of various observables are found to be globally consistent with the hypothesis that this theory is within or just outside the strongly-coupled edge of the conformal window, with mass anomalous dimension consistent with 1 over the range of scales simulated. We stress that we cannot rule out the possibility of spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking at scales well below our infrared cutoff. We discuss important systematic effects, including finite-volume corrections, and consider directions for future improvement.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Higgs Production Using the Pomeron in AdS

In the past decade overwhelming evidence has emerged for a conjectured duality between a wide class of gauge theories in d dimensions and string theories on asymptotically AdS_{d+1} spaces. We apply this duality to scattering processes that occur via Pomeron exchange. First we develop the Pomeron in string theory, as done by Brower, Polchinski, Strassler and Tan, showing that it naturally emerges as the Regge Trajectory of the AdS graviton. Next we apply the AdS Pomeron to the study of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), and see that our model gives good results when compared to HERA data. We then show how we can extend our results to double Pomeron exchange, and apply it to developing a formalism for the study of double diffractive Higgs production.

Diffractive Higgs Production by AdS Pomeron Fusion

The double diffractive Higgs production at central rapidity is formulated in terms of the fusion of two AdS gravitons/Pomerons first introduced by Brower, Polchinski, Strassler and Tan in elastic scattering. Here we propose a simple self-consistent holographic framework capable of providing phenomenologically compelling estimates of diffractive cross sections at the LHC. As in the traditional weak coupling approach, we anticipate that several phenomenological parameters must be tested and calibrated through factorization for a self-consistent description of other diffractive process such as total cross sections, deep inelastic scattering and heavy quark production in the central region.

Exploring strange nucleon form factors on the lattice

We discuss techniques for evaluating sea quark contributions to hadronic form factors on the lattice and apply these to an exploratory calculation of the strange electromagnetic, axial, and scalar form factors of the nucleon. We employ the Wilson gauge and fermion actions on an anisotropic 24^3 x 64 lattice, probing a range of momentum transfer with Q^2 < 1 GeV^2. The strange electric and magnetic form factors, G_E^s(Q^2) and G_M^s(Q^2), are found to be small and consistent with zero within the statistics of our calculation. The lattice data favor a small negative value for the strange axial form factor G_A^s(Q^2) and exhibit a strong signal for the bare strange scalar matrix element <N|ss|N>_0. We discuss the unique systematic uncertainties affecting the latter quantity relative to the continuum, as well as prospects for improving future determinations with Wilson-like fermions.

Small-x Deep Inelastic Scattering via the Pomeron in AdS

We examine the process of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) in the small-x limit, where Pomeron exchange dominates. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study Pomeron exchange in the dual string theory in AdS space, which allows us to study DIS at strong coupling. Two possibilities are examined, a purely conformal model, and a model with a hard-wall cutoff introduced to take into account the effects of confinement. Comparing our calculations with HERA DIS data, we find a very good agreement not only at large $Q^2$ dominated by conformal symmetry, but due to our strong coupling approach which allows us to go beyond traditional pQCD methods, at small $Q^2$ as well, taking into account all available HERA small x data.

WW Scattering Parameters via Pseudoscalar Phase Shifts

Using domain-wall lattice simulations, we study pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar scattering in the maximal isospin channel for an SU(3) gauge theory with two and six fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. This calculation of the S-wave scattering length is related to the next-to-leading order corrections to WW scattering through the low-energy coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian. While two and six flavor scattering lengths are similar for a fixed ratio of the pseudoscalar mass to its decay constant, six-flavor scattering shows a somewhat less repulsive next-to-leading order interaction than its two-flavor counterpart. Estimates are made for the WW scattering parameters and the plausibility of detection is discussed.

The AdS Graviton/Pomeron Description of Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small x

In the holographic or AdS/CFT dual to QCD, the Pomeron is identified with a Reggeized Graviton in $AdS_5$. We emphasize the importance of confinement, which in this context corresponds to a deformation of $AdS_5$ geometry in the IR. The holographic Pomeron provides a very good fit to the combined data from HERA for Deep Inelastic Scattering at small $x$, lending new confidence to this AdS dual approach to high energy diffractive scattering.

On the Eikonal Approximation in AdS Space

We explore the eikonal approximation to graviton exchange in AdS_5 space, as relevant to scattering in gauge theories. We restrict ourselves to the regime where conformal invariance of the dual gauge theory holds, and to large 't Hooft coupling where the computation involves pure gravity. We give a heuristic argument, a direct loop computation, and a shock wave derivation. The scalar propagator in AdS_3 plays a key role, indicating that even at strong coupling, two-dimensional conformal invariance controls high-energy four-dimensional gauge-theory scattering.

On The Pomeron at Large 't Hooft Coupling

We begin the process of unitarizing the Pomeron at large 't Hooft coupling. We do so first in the conformal regime, which applies to good accuracy to a number of real and toy problems in QCD. We rewrite the conformal Pomeron in the $J$-plane and transverse position space, and then work out the eikonal approximation to multiple Pomeron exchange. This is done in the context of a more general treatment of the complex $J$-plane and the geometric consequences of conformal invariance. The methods required are direct generalizations of our previous work on single Pomeron exchange and on multiple graviton exchange in AdS space, and should form a starting point for other investigations. We consider unitarity and saturation in the conformal regime, noting elastic and absorptive effects, and exploring where different processes dominate. Our methods extend to confining theories and we briefly consider the Pomeron kernel in this context. Though there is important model dependence that requires detailed consideration, the eikonal approximation indicates that the Froissart bound is generically both satisfied and saturated.

Parity Doubling and the S Parameter Below the Conformal Window

We describe a lattice simulation of the masses and decay constants of the lowest-lying vector and axial resonances, and the electroweak S parameter, in an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f = 2$ and 6 fermions in the fundamental representation. The spectrum becomes more parity doubled and the S parameter per electroweak doublet decreases when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6, motivating study of these trends as $N_f$ is increased further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.

String-Gauge Dual Description of Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small-$x$

The AdS/CFT correspondence in principle gives a new approach to deep inelastic scattering as formulated by Polchinski and Strassler. Subsequently Brower, Polchinski, Strassler and Tan (BPST) computed the strong coupling kernel for the vacuum (or Pomeron) contribution to total cross sections. By identifying deep inelastic scattering with virtual photon total cross section, this allows a self consistent description at small-$x$ where the dominant contribution is the vacuum exchange process. Here we formulate this contribution and compare it with HERA small-$x$ DIS scattering data. We find that the BPST kernel along with a very simple local approximation to the proton and current "wave functions" gives a remarkably good fit not only at large $Q^2$ dominated by conformal symmetry but also extends to small $Q^2$, supplemented by a hard-wall cut-off of the AdS in the IR. We suggest that this is a useful phenomenological parametrization with implications for other diffractive processes, such as double diffractive Higgs production.

Toward TeV Conformality

We study the chiral condensate $<\barψ ψ>$ for an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f$ massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6. For $N_f=2$, our lattice simulations of $<\barψ ψ>/F^3$, where $F$ is the Nambu-Goldstone-boson decay constant, agree with the measured QCD value. For $N_f = 6$, this ratio shows significant enhancement, presaging an even larger enhancement anticipated as $N_f$ increases further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.

Analyticity for Multi-Regge Limits of the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov Amplitudes

As a consequence of the AdS/CFT correspondence, planar ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is expected to exhibit stringy behavior and multi-Regge asymptotic. In this paper we extend our recent investigation to consider issues of analyticity, a central feature of Regge asymptotics. We contrast flat-space open string theory in the planar limit with the ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, as represented by the Bern, Dixon and Smirnov \cite{Bern:2005iz} (BDS) conjecture for n-gluon scattering, believed to be exact for $n=4,5$ and modified only by a function of cross-ratios for $n\geq 6$. It is emphasized that multi-Regge factorization should be applied to trajectories with definite signature. A variety of analyticity and factorization constraints realized in flat space string theory are not satisfied by the BDS conjecture, at least when the exponential factors are truncate in the infra-red regulator below $O(ε)$.

Implications of multi-Regge limits for the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov conjecture

Planar ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is expected to exhibit stringy behavior, anticipated by the 't Hooft genus expansion and the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence. We examine the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov (BDS) conjecture for $n$-gluon amplitudes in the context of single-Regge and multi-Regge limits and show that these amplitudes have the expected Regge form in the Euclidean region.

The role of multigrid algorithms for LQCD

We report on the first successful QCD multigrid algorithm which demonstrates constant convergence rates independent of quark mass and lattice volume for the Wilson Dirac operator. The new ingredient is the adaptive method for constructing the near null space on which the coarse grid multigrid Dirac operator acts. In addition we speculate on future prospects for extending this algorithm to the Domain Wall and Staggered discretizations, its exceptional suitability for high performance GPU code and its potential impact on simulations at the physical pion mass.

Mobius Fermions: Improved Domain Wall Chiral Fermions

A new class of domain wall fermions is defined that interpolates between Shamir's and Boriçi's form without increasing the number of Dirac applications per CG iteration. This class represents a full (real) Möbius transformation of the Wilson kernel. Simulations on quenched Wilson lattices with $β= 6.0$ show that the number of lattice sites ($L_s$) in the fifth dimension can be reduced by a factor of 2 or more at fixed value of chiral symmetry violations measured by the residual mass ($m_{res}$).

Brane World Gravity in an AdS Black Hole

We consider a model of brane world gravity in the context of non-conformal non-SUSY matter. In particular we modify the earlier strong coupling solution to the glueball spectrum in an $AdS^7$ Black Hole by introducing a Randall-Sundrum Planck brane as a UV cut-off. The consequence is a new normalizable zero mass tensor state, which gives rise to an effective Einstein-Hilbert theory of gravity, with exponentially small corrections set by the mass gap to the discrete glueball spectrum. However the simplest microscopic theory for the Planck brane is found to have a tachyonic instability in the radion mode.

Hagedorn transition for strings on pp-waves and tori with chemical potentials

It has been conjectured that string theory in a pp-wave background is dual to a sector of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We study the Hagedorn transition for free strings in this background. We find that the free energy at the transition point is finite suggesting a confinement/deconfinement transition in the gauge theory. In the limit of vanishing mass parameter the free energy matches that of free strings on an 8-torus with momentum/winding chemical potential. The entropy in the microcanonical ensemble with fixed energy and fixed momentum/winding is computed in each case.

From Black Holes to Glueballs: The QCD_3 Tensor Glueball at Strong Coupling

A strong coupling calculation of glueball masses based on the duality between supergravity and Yang-Mills theory is presented. Earlier work is extended to non-zero spin. Fluctuations in the gravitational metric lead to the 2^{++} state on the leading Pomeron trajectory with a mass relation: m(0^{++}) < m(2^{++}) < m(1^{-+}). Contrary to expectation, the mass of our new 0^{++} state (m^2=5.4573) associated with the graviton is smaller than the mass of the ${\tilde 0}^{++}$ state (m^2=11.588) from the dilaton, which in fact is exactly degenerate with the tensor 2^{++}.

Magnetic monopole loop for the Yang-Mills instanton

We investigate 't Hooft-Mandelstam monopoles in QCD in the presence of a single classical instanton configuration. The solution to the Maximal Abelian projection is found to be a circular monopole trajectory with radius $R$ centered on the instanton. At zero loop radius, there is a marginally stable (or flat) direction for loop formation to $O(R^4 logR)$. We argue that loops will form, in the semi-classical limit, due to small perturbations such as the dipole interaction between instanton anti-instanton pairs. As the instanton gas becomes a liquid, the percolation of the monopole loops may therefore provide a semi-classical precursor to the confinement mechanism.
