Semiclassical spectrum of a Jordanian deformation of $AdS_5 \times S^5$

We study a Jordanian deformation of the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ superstring that preserves 12 superisometries. It is an example of homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations, a class that generalises TsT deformations to the non-abelian case. Many of the attractive features of TsT carry over to this more general class, from the possibility of generating new supergravity solutions to the preservation of worldsheet integrability. In this paper, we exploit the fact that the deformed $σ$-model with periodic boundary conditions can be reformulated as an undeformed one with twisted boundary conditions, to discuss the construction of the classical spectral curve and its semi-classical quantisation. First, we find global coordinates for the deformed background, and identify the global time corresponding to the energy that should be computed in the spectral problem. Using the curve of the twisted model, we obtain the one-loop correction to the energy of a particular solution, and we find that the charge encoding the twisted boundary conditions does not receive an anomalous correction. Finally, we give evidence suggesting that the unimodular version of the deformation (giving rise to a supergravity background) and the non-unimodular one (whose background does not solve the supergravity equations) have the same spectrum at least to one-loop.

Homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations as undeformed yet twisted models

The homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformation is part of a larger web of integrable deformations and dualities that recently have been studied with motivations in integrable $σ$-models, solution-generating techniques in supergravity and Double Field Theory, and possible generalisations of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The $σ$-models obtained by the homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformation with periodic boundary conditions on the worldsheet are on-shell equivalent to undeformed models, yet with twisted boundary conditions. While this has been known for some time, the expression provided so far for the twist features non-localities (in terms of the degrees of freedom of the deformed model) that prevent practical calculations, and in particular the construction of the classical spectral curve. We solve this problem by rewriting the equation defining the twist in terms of the degrees of freedom of the undeformed yet twisted model, and we show that we are able to solve it in full generality. Remarkably, this solution is a local expression. We discuss the consequences of the twist at the level of the monodromy matrix and of the classical spectral curve, analysing in particular the concrete examples of abelian, almost abelian and Jordanian deformations of the Yang-Baxter class.

Supergravity solution-generating techniques and canonical transformations of $σ$-models from $O(D,D)$

Within the framework of the flux formulation of Double Field Theory (DFT) we employ a generalised Scherk-Schwarz ansatz and discuss the classification of the twists that in the presence of the strong constraint give rise to constant generalised fluxes interpreted as gaugings. We analyse the various possibilities of turning on the fluxes $H_{ijk}, F_{ij}{}^k, Q_i{}^{jk}$ and $R^{ijk}$, and the solutions for the twists allowed in each case. While we do not impose the DFT (or equivalently supergravity) equations of motion, our results provide solution-generating techniques in supergravity when applied to a background that does solve the DFT equations. At the same time, our results give rise also to canonical transformations of 2-dimensional $σ$-models, a fact which is interesting especially because these are integrability-preserving transformations on the worldsheet. Both the solution-generating techniques of supergravity and the canonical transformations of 2-dimensional $σ$-models arise as maps that leave the generalised fluxes of DFT and their flat derivatives invariant. These maps include the known abelian/non-abelian/Poisson-Lie T-duality transformations, Yang-Baxter deformations, as well as novel generalisations of them.

The first $α'$-correction to homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations using $O(d,d)$

We use the $O(d,d)$-covariant formulation of supergravity familiar from Double Field Theory to find the first $α'$-correction to (unimodular) homogeneous Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations of the bosonic string. A special case of this result gives the $α'$-correction to TsT transformations. In a suitable scheme the correction comes entirely from an induced anomalous double Lorentz transformation, which is needed to make the two vielbeins obtained upon the YB deformation equal. This should hold more generally, in particular for abelian and non-abelian T-duality, as we discuss.

Two-loop conformal invariance for Yang-Baxter deformed strings

The so-called homogeneous Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations can be considered a non-abelian generalization of T-duality--shift--T-duality (TsT) transformations. TsT transformations are known to preserve conformal symmetry to all orders in $α'$. Here we argue that (unimodular) YB deformations of a bosonic string also preserve conformal symmetry, at least to two-loop order. We do this by showing that, starting from a background with no NSNS-flux, the deformed background solves the $α'$-corrected supergravity equations to second order in the deformation parameter. At the same time we determine the required $α'$-corrections of the deformed background, which take a relatively simple form. In examples that can be constructed using, possibly non-commuting sequences of, TsT transformations we show how to obtain the first $α'$-correction to all orders in the deformation parameter by making use of the $α'$-corrected T-duality rules. We demonstrate this on the specific example of YB deformations of a Bianchi type II background.

Integrable strings for AdS/CFT

In this PhD thesis we review some aspects of integrable models related to string backgrounds or their deformations. In the first part we develop methods to obtain exact results in the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence. We consider the AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 background with pure Ramond-Ramond flux and we find the all-loop worldsheet S-matrix by exploiting the symmetries of the model in light-cone gauge. As we naturally include the massless modes on the worldsheet, we derive the full set of Bethe-Yang equations. In the massive sector we give also a spin-chain description and we write down solutions compatible with crossing for the scalar factors which are not constrained by simmetries. In the second part of the thesis we consider the so-called "eta-deformation" of the superstring on AdS_5 x S^5. We first discuss the effects of the deformation at the level of the bosonic sigma-model, and we match the tree-level worldsheet scattering processes to the expansion of the q-deformed S-matrix. To identify the missing Ramond-Ramond fields we then compute the action quadratic in fermions, and we provide an alternative derivation by looking at the kappa-symmetry variations. The resulting background fields do not solve the equations of motion of type IIB supergravity and we comment on this.

On the Dressing Factors, Bethe Equations and Yangian Symmetry of Strings on AdS3 x S3 x T4

Integrability is believed to underlie the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence with sixteen supercharges. We elucidate the role of massless modes within this integrable framework. Firstly, we find the dressing factors that enter the massless and mixed-mass worldsheet S matrix. Secondly, we derive a set of all-loop Bethe Equations for the closed strings, determine their symmetries and weak-coupling limit. Thirdly, we investigate the underlying Yangian symmetry in the massless sector and show that it fits into the general framework of Yangian integrability. In addition, we compare our S matrix in the near-relativistic limit with recent perturbative worldsheet calculations of Sundin and Wulff.

On the spectrum of AdS3 x S3 x T4 strings with Ramond-Ramond flux

We analyze the spectrum of perturbative closed strings on AdS3 x S3 x T4 with Ramond-Ramond flux using integrable methods. By solving the crossing equations we determine the massless and mixed-mass dressing factors of the worldsheet S matrix and derive the Bethe equations. Using these, we construct the underlying integrable spin chain and show that it reproduces the reducible spin chain conjectured at weak coupling in arXiv:1211.1952. We find that the string-theory massless modes are described by gapless excitations of the spin chain. The resulting degeneracy of vacua matches precisely the protected supergravity spectrum found by de Boer.

Puzzles of eta-deformed AdS_5 x S^5

We derive the part of the Lagrangian for the sigma model on the eta-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 space which is quadratic in fermions and has the full dependence on bosons. We then show that there exists a field redefinition which brings the corresponding Lagrangian to the standard form of type IIB Green-Schwarz superstring. Reading off the corresponding RR couplings, we observe that they fail to satisfy the supergravity equations of motion, despite the presence of kappa-symmetry. However, in a special scaling limit our solution reproduces the supergravity background found by Maldacena and Russo. Further, using the fermionic Lagrangian, we compute a number of new matrix elements of the tree level world-sheet scattering matrix. We then show that after a unitary transformation on the basis of two-particle states which is not one-particle factorisable, the corresponding T-matrix factorises into two equivalent parts. Each part satisfies the classical Yang-Baxter equation and coincides with the large tension limit of the q-deformed S-matrix.

Target space supergeometry of $η$ and $λ$-deformed strings

We study the integrable $η$ and $λ$-deformations of supercoset string sigma models, the basic example being the deformation of the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ superstring. We prove that the kappa symmetry variations for these models are of the standard Green-Schwarz form, and we determine the target space supergeometry by computing the superspace torsion. We check that the $λ$-deformation gives rise to a standard (generically type II*) supergravity background; for the $η$-model the requirement that the target space is a supergravity solution translates into a simple condition on the R-matrix which enters the definition of the deformation. We further construct all such non-abelian R-matrices of rank four which solve the homogeneous classical Yang-Baxter equation for the algebra so(2,4). We argue that the corresponding backgrounds are equivalent to sequences of non-commuting TsT-transformations, and verify this explicitly for some of the examples.

The $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times\mathrm{S}^1$ worldsheet S matrix

We investigate type IIB strings on $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times\mathrm{S}^1$ with mixed Ramond-Ramond (R-R) and Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz (NS-NS) flux. By suitably gauge-fixing the closed string Green-Schwarz (GS) action of this theory, we derive the off-shell symmetry algebra and its representations. We use these to determine the non-perturbative worldsheet S-matrix of fundamental excitations in the theory. The analysis involves both massive and massless modes in complete generality. The S-matrix we find involves a number of phase factors, which in turn satisfy crossing equations that we also determine. We comment on the nature of the heaviest modes of the theory, but leave their identification either as composites or bound-states to a future investigation.

All-loop worldsheet S matrix for AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4

We obtain the all-loop worldsheet S matrix for fundamental excitations on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 by studying the off-shell symmetry algebra of the superspace action in lightcone gauge. The massless modes, unaccounted for in earlier works, are automatically included in our treatment. Their exact dispersion relation is found to be non-relativistic, of giant-magnon form and their scattering is naturally well-defined. This opens the way to a complete investigation of AdS_3/CFT_2 integrability.

The complete AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 worldsheet S-matrix

We derive the non-perturbative worldsheet S matrix for fundamental excitations of Type IIB superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with Ramond-Ramond flux. To this end, we study the off-shell symmetry algebra of the theory and its representations. We use these to determine the S matrix up to scalar factors and we derive the crossing equations that these scalar factors satisfy. Our treatment automatically includes fundamental massless excitations, removing a long-standing obstacle in using integrability to study the AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence. The present paper contains a detailed derivation of results first announced in arXiv:1403.4543.

A dynamic su(1|1)^2 S-matrix for AdS3/CFT2

We derive the S-matrix for the d(2,1;alpha)^2 symmetric spin-chain of AdS3/CFT2 by considering the centrally extended su(1|1)^2 algebra acting on the spin-chain excitations. The S-matrix is determined uniquely up to four scalar factors, which are further constrained by a set of crossing relations. The resulting scattering includes non-trivial processes between magnons of different masses that were previously overlooked.

Dressing phases of AdS3/CFT2

We determine the all-loop dressing phases of the AdS3/CFT2 integrable system related to type IIB string theory on AdS3 x S3 x T4 by solving the recently found crossing relations and studying their singularity structure. The two resulting phases present a novel structure with respect to the ones appearing in AdS5/CFT4 and AdS4/CFT3. In the strongly-coupled regime, their leading order reduces to the universal Arutyunov-Frolov-Staudacher phase as expected. We also compute their sub-leading order and compare it with recent one-loop perturbative results, and comment on their weak-coupling expansion.

The all-loop integrable spin-chain for strings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4: the massive sector

We bootstrap the all-loop dynamic S-matrix for the homogeneous psu(1,1|2)^2 spin-chain believed to correspond to the discretization of the massive modes of string theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. The S-matrix is the tensor product of two copies of the su(1|1)^2 invariant S-matrix constructed recently for the d(2,1;alpha)^2 chain, and depends on two antisymmetric dressing phases. We write down the crossing equations that these phases have to satisfy. Furthermore, we present the corresponding Bethe Ansatz, which differs from the one previously conjectured, and discuss how our construction matches several recent perturbative calculations.
