Plane quartics over Q\mathbb{Q} with complex multiplication

We give examples of smooth plane quartics over Q\mathbb{Q} with complex multiplication over Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}} by a maximal order with primitive CM type. We describe the required algorithms as we go, these involve the reduction of period matrices, the fast computation of Dixmier-Ohno invariants, and reconstruction from these invariants. Finally, we discuss some of the reduction properties of the curves that we obtain.

The geometry of some parameterizations and encodings

We explore parameterizations by radicals of low genera algebraic curves. We prove that for qq a prime power that is large enough and prime to 66, a fixed positive proportion of all genus 2 curves over the field with qq elements can be parameterized by 33-radicals. This results in the existence of a deterministic encoding into these curves when qq is congruent to 22 modulo 33. We extend this construction to parameterizations by ℓ\ell-radicals for small odd integers ℓ\ell, and make it explicit for ℓ=5\ell=5.

Fast construction of irreducible polynomials over finite fields

We present a randomized algorithm that on input a finite field KK with qq elements and a positive integer dd outputs a degree dd irreducible polynomial in K[x]K[x]. The running time is d1+ε(d)×(log⁡q)5+ε(q)d^{1+ε(d)} \times (\log q)^{5+ε(q)} elementary operations. The function εε in this expression is a real positive function belonging to the class o(1)o(1), especially, the complexity is quasi-linear in the degree dd. Once given such an irreducible polynomial of degree dd, we can compute random irreducible polynomials of degree dd at the expense of d1+ε(d)×(log⁡q)1+ε(q)d^{1+ε(d)} \times (\log q)^{1+ε(q)} elementary operations only.
