Asymptotic stability of steady states for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Riesz system in the presence of vacuum

We consider a one-dimensional physical vacuum free boundary problem on the compressible Navier-Stokes-Riesz system for an attractive Riesz potential $|x|^{2s-1}/(2s-1)$ with $0<s<1/2$. It is proved that for the adiabatic constant $γ$ satisfying $2(1-s)<γ<1+2s/3$ under the additional condition that $3/8<s<1/2$, there exists a unique global-in-time strong solution. Specifically, we establish the Lyapunov-type stability of the compactly supported steady states in the Lagrangian coordinates and we also obtain the time rate of convergence for the strong solution to steady states with the same mass in weighted Sobolev spaces where the weights indicate the behavior of solutions near the vacuum free boundary. The difficulties and challenges in the proof are caused not only by the degeneracy due to the vacuum free boundary but also by the non-local feature of the Riesz potential.

Boltzmann equation with mixed boundary condition

We study the Boltzmann equation in a smooth bounded domain featuring a mixed boundary condition. Specifically, gas particles experience specular reflection in two parallel plates, while diffusive reflection occurs in the remaining portion between these two specular regions. The boundary is assumed to be motionless and isothermal. Our main focus is on constructing global-in-time small-amplitude solutions around global Maxwellians for the corresponding initial-boundary value problem. The proof relies on the $L^2$ hypocoercivity at the linear level, utilizing the weak formulation and various functional inequalities on the test functions, such as Poincaré and Korn inequalities. It also extends to the linear problem involving Maxwell boundary conditions, where the accommodation coefficient can be a piecewise constant function on the boundary, allowing for more general bounded domains. Moreover, we develop a delicate application of the $L^2-L^\infty$ bootstrap argument, which relies on the specific geometry of our domains, to effectively handle this mixed-type boundary condition.

Compressible fluid limit for smooth solutions to the Landau equation

Although the compressible fluid limit of the Boltzmann equation with cutoff has been well investigated in [6] and [13], it still remains largely open to obtain analogous results in case of the angular non-cutoff or even in the grazing limit which gives the Landau equation, essentially due to the velocity diffusion effect of collision operator such that $L^\infty$ estimates are hard to obtain without using Sobolev embeddings. In the paper, we are concerned with the compressible Euler and acoustic limits of the Landau equation for Coulomb potentials in the whole space. Specifically, over any finite time interval where the full compressible Euler system admits a smooth solution around constant states, we construct a unique solution in a high-order weighted Sobolev space for the Landau equation with suitable initial data and also show the uniform estimates independent of the small Knudsen number $\varepsilon>0$, yielding the $O(\varepsilon)$ convergence of the Landau solution to the local Maxwellian whose fluid quantities are the given Euler solution. Moreover, the acoustic limit for smooth solutions to the Landau equation in an optimal scaling is also established. For the proof, by using the macro-micro decomposition around local Maxwellians together with techniques for viscous compressible fluid and properties of Burnett functions, we design an $\varepsilon$-dependent energy functional to capture the dissipation in the compressible fluid limit with feature that only the highest order derivatives are most singular.

Asymptotics toward viscous contact waves for solutions of the Landau equation

In the paper, we are concerned with the large time asymptotics toward the viscous contact waves for solutions of the Landau equation with physically realistic Coulomb interactions. Precisely, for the corresponding Cauchy problem in the spatially one-dimensional setting, we construct the unique global-in-time solution near a local Maxwellian whose fluid quantities are the viscous contact waves in the sense of hydrodynamics and also prove that the solution tends toward such local Maxwellian in large time. The result is proved by elaborate energy estimates and seems the first one on the dynamical stability of contact waves for the Landau equation. One key point of the proof is to introduce a new time-velocity weight function that includes an exponential factor of the form $\exp (q(t)\langle ξ\rangle^2)$ with $$ q(t):=q_1-q_2\int_0^tq_3(s)\,ds, $$ where $q_1$ and $q_2$ are given positive constants and $q_3(\cdot)$ is defined by the energy dissipation rate of the solution itself. The time derivative of such weight function is able to induce an extra quartic dissipation term for treating the large-velocity growth in the nonlinear estimates due to degeneration of the linearized Landau operator in the Coulomb case. Note that in our problem the explicit time-decay of solutions around contact waves is unavailable but no longer needed under the crucial use of the above weight function, which is different from the situation in [11, 14].

Compressible Navier-Stokes approximation for the Boltzmann equation in bounded domains

It is well known that the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations can be deduced via the Chapman-Enskog expansion from the Boltzmann equation as the first-order correction to the Euler equations with viscosity and heat-conductivity coefficients of order of the Knudsen number $ε>0$. In the paper, we carry out the rigorous mathematical analysis of the compressible Navier-Stokes approximation for the Boltzmann equation regarding the initial-boundary value problems in general bounded domains. The main goal is to measure the uniform-in-time deviation of the Boltzmann solution with diffusive reflection boundary condition from a local Maxwellian with its fluid quantities given by the solutions to the corresponding compressible Navier-Stokes equations with consistent non-slip boundary conditions whenever $ε>0$ is small enough. Specifically, it is shown that for well chosen initial data around constant equilibrium states, the deviation weighted by a velocity function is $O(ε^{1/2})$ in $L^\infty_{x,v}$ and $O(ε^{3/2})$ in $L^2_{x,v}$ globally in time. The proof is based on the uniform estimates for the remainder in different functional spaces without any spatial regularity. One key step is to obtain the global-in-time existence as well as uniform-in-$ε$ estimates for regular solutions to the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domains when the parameter $ε>0$ is involved in the analysis.

Global mild solutions of the Landau and non-cutoff Boltzmann equations

This paper proves the existence of small-amplitude global-in-time unique mild solutions to both the Landau equation including the Coulomb potential and the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. Since the well-known works (Guo, 2002) and (Gressman-Strain-2011, AMUXY-2012) on the construction of classical solutions in smooth Sobolev spaces which in particular are regular in the spatial variables, it still remains an open problem to obtain global solutions in an $L^\infty_{x,v}$ framework, similar to that in (Guo-2010), for the Boltzmann equation with cutoff in general bounded domains. One main difficulty arises from the interaction between the transport operator and the velocity-diffusion-type collision operator in the non-cutoff Boltzmann and Landau equations; another major difficulty is the potential formation of singularities for solutions to the boundary value problem. In the present work we introduce a new function space with low regularity in the spatial variable to treat the problem in cases when the spatial domain is either a torus, or a finite channel with boundary. For the latter case, either the inflow boundary condition or the specular reflection boundary condition is considered. An important property of the function space is that the $L^\infty_T L^2_v$ norm, in velocity and time, of the distribution function is in the Wiener algebra $A(Ω)$ in the spatial variables. Besides the construction of global solutions in these function spaces, we additionally study the large-time behavior of solutions for both hard and soft potentials, and we further justify the property of propagation of regularity of solutions in the spatial variables.

Darcy's law and diffusion for a two-fluid Euler-Maxwell system with dissipation

This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem on the two-fluid Euler-Maxwell system with collisions when initial data are around a constant equilibrium state. The main goal is the rigorous justification of diffusion phenomena in fluid plasma at the linear level. Precisely, motivated by the classical Darcy's law for the nonconductive fluid, we first give a heuristic derivation of the asymptotic equations of the Euler-Maxwell system in large time. It turns out that both the density and the magnetic field tend time-asymptotically to the diffusion equations with diffusive coefficients explicitly determined by given physical parameters. Then, in terms of the Fourier energy method, we analyze the linear dissipative structure of the system, which implies the almost exponential time-decay property of solutions over the high-frequency domain. The key part of the paper is the spectral analysis of the linearized system, exactly capturing the diffusive feature of solutions over the low-frequency domain. Finally, under some conditions on initial data, we show the convergence of the densities and the magnetic field to the corresponding linear diffusion waves with the rate $(1+t)^{-5/4}$ in $L^2$ norm and also the convergence of the velocities and the electric field to the corresponding asymptotic profiles given in the sense of the geneneralized Darcy's law with the faster rate $(1+t)^{-7/4}$ in $L^2$ norm. Thus, this work can be also regarded as the mathematical proof of the Darcy's law in the context of collisional fluid plasma.

Decay structure for symmetric hyperbolic systems with non-symmetric relaxation and its application

This paper is concerned with the decay structure for linear symmetric hyperbolic systems with relaxation. When the relaxation matrix is symmetric, the dissipative structure of the systems is completely characterized by the Kawashima-Shizuta stability condition formulated in \cite{UKS84,SK85}, and we obtain the asymptotic stability result together with the explicit time-decay rate under that stability condition. However, some physical models which satisfy the stability condition have non-symmetric relaxation term (cf.~the Timoshenko system and the Euler-Maxwell system). Moreover, it had been already known that the dissipative structure of such systems is weaker than the standard type and is of the regularity-loss type (cf.~\cite{D,IHK08,IK08,USK,UK}). Therefore our purpose of this paper is to formulate a new structural condition which include the Kawashima-Shizuta condition, and to analyze the weak dissipative structure for general systems with non-symmetric relaxation.

Global stability of the rarefaction wave of the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system

This paper is devoted to the study of the nonlinear stability of the rarefaction waves of the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system with slab symmetry in the case where the electron background density satisfies an analogue of the Boltzmann relation. We allows that the electric potential may take distinct constant states at both far-fields. The rarefaction wave whose strength is not necessarily small is constructed through the quasineutral Euler equations coming from the zero-order fluid dynamic approximation of the kinetic system. We prove that the local Maxwellian with macroscopic quantities determined by the quasineutral rarefaction wave is time-asymptotically stable under small perturbations for the corresponding Cauchy problem on the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system. The main analytical tool is the combination of techniques we developed in [10] for the viscous compressible fluid with the self-consistent electric field and the reciprocal energy method based on the macro-micro decomposition of the Boltzmann equation around a local Maxwellian. Both the time decay property of the rarefaction waves and the structure of the Poisson equation play a key role in the analysis.

Stability of rarefaction waves of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system

In the paper we are concerned with the large time behavior of solutions to the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in the case when the potential function of the self-consistent electric field may take distinct constant states at $x=\pm\infty$. Precisely, it is shown that if initial data are close to a constant state with asymptotic values at far fields chosen such that the Riemann problem on the corresponding quasineutral Euler system admits a rarefaction wave whose strength is not necessarily small, then the solution exists for all time and tends to the rarefaction wave as $t\to+\infty$. The construction of the nontrivial large-time profile of the potential basing on the quasineutral assumption plays a key role in the stability analysis. The proof is based on the energy method by taking into account the effect of the self-consistent electric field on the viscous compressible fluid.

The Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system near Maxwellians in the whole space with very soft potentials

Since the work [13] by Guo [Invent. Math. 153 (2003), no. 3, 593--630], how to establish the global existence of perturbative classical solutions around a global Maxwellian to the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system with the whole range of soft potentials has been an open problem. This is mainly due to the complex structure of the system, in particular, the degenerate dissipation at large velocity, the velocity-growth of the nonlinear term induced by the Lorentz force, and the regularity-loss of the electromagnetic fields. This paper aims to resolve this problem in the whole space provided that initial perturbation has sufficient regularity and velocity-integrability.

Global well-posedness in spatially critical Besov space for the Boltzmann equation

The unique global strong solution in the Chemin-Lerner type space to the Cauchy problem on the Boltzmann equation for hard potentials is constructed in perturbation framework. Such solution space is of critical regularity with respect to spatial variable, and it can capture the intrinsic property of the Botlzmann equation. For the proof of global well-posedness, we develop some new estimates on the nonlinear collision term through the Littlewood-Paley theory.

The Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system without angular cutoff

This paper is concerned with the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system for plasma particles of two species in three space dimensions. The Boltzmann collision kernel is assumed to be angular non-cutoff with $-3<γ<-2s$ and $1/2\leq s<1$, where $γ$, $s$ are two parameters describing the kinetic and angular singularities, respectively. We establish the global existence and convergence rates of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem when initial data is near Maxwellians. This extends the results in \cite{DYZ-h, DYZ-s} for the cutoff kernel with $-2\leq γ\leq 1$ to the case $-3<γ<-2$ as long as the angular singularity exists instead and is strong enough, i.e., $s$ is close to 1. The proof is based on the time-weighted energy method building also upon the recent studies of the non cutoff Boltzmann equation in \cite{GR} and the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system in \cite{Guo5}.

Global smooth dynamics of a fully ionized plasma with long-range collisions

The motion of a fully ionized plasma of electrons and ions is generally governed by the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system. We prove the global existence of solutions near Maxwellians to the Cauchy problem of the system for the long-range collision kernel of soft potentials, particularly including the classical Coulomb collision, provided that initial data is smooth enough and decays in velocity variable fast enough. As a byproduct, the convergence rates of solutions are also obtained. The proof is based on the energy method through designing a new temporal energy norm to capture different features of this complex system such as dispersion of the macro component in $\mathbb{R}^3$, singularity of the long-range collisions and regularity-loss of the electromagnetic field.

The Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann System for Soft Potentials

An important physical model describing the dynamics of dilute weakly ionized plasmas in the collisional kinetic theory is the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system for which the plasma responds strongly to the self-consistent electrostatic force. This paper is concerned with the electron dynamics of kinetic plasmas in the whole space when the positive charged ion flow provides a spatially uniform background. We establish the global existence and optimal convergence rates of solutions near a global Maxwellian to the Cauchy problem on the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system for angular cutoff soft potentials with $-2\leq γ<0$. The main idea is to introduce a time dependent weight function in the velocity variable to capture the singularity of the cross-section at zero relative velocity.

Dissipative property of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann System with a uniform ionic background

In this paper we discuss the dissipative property of near-equilibrium classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann System in the whole space $\R^3$ when the positive charged ion flow provides a spatially uniform background. The most key point of studying this coupled degenerately dissipative system here is to establish the dissipation of the electromagnetic field which turns out to be of the regularity-loss type. Precisely, for the linearized non-homogeneous system, some $L^2$ energy functionals and $L^2$ time-frequency functionals which are equivalent with the naturally existing ones are designed to capture the optimal dissipation rate of the system, which in turn yields the optimal $L^p$-$L^q$ type time-decay estimates of the corresponding linearized solution operator. These results show a special feature of the one-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system different from the case of two-species, that is, the dissipation of the magnetic field in one-species is strictly weaker than the one in two-species. As a by-product, the global existence of solutions to the nonlinear Cauchy problem is also proved by constructing some similar energy functionals but the time-decay rates of the obtained solution still remain open.

Global Smooth Flows for the Compressible Euler-Maxwell System: Relaxation Case

The Euler-Maxwell system as a hydrodynamic model for plasma physics to describe the dynamics of the compressible electrons in a constant charged non-moving ion background is studied. The global smooth flow with small amplitude is constructed in three space dimensions when the electron velocity relaxation is present. The speed of the electrons flow trending to uniform equilibrium is obtained. The pointwise behavior of solutions to the linearized homogeneous system in the frequency space is also investigated in detail.

Green's function and large time behavior of the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system

In this paper, we are concerned with the system of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Maxwell equations through the Lorentz force in three space dimensions. The asymptotic stability of the steady state with the strictly positive constant density and the vanishing velocity and electromagnetic field is established under small initial perturbations in regular Sobolev space. For that, the dissipative structure of this hyperbolic-parabolic system is studied to include the effect of the electromagnetic field into the viscous fluid and turns out to be more complicated than that in the simpler compressible Navier-Stokes system. Moreover, the detailed analysis of the Green's function to the linearized system is made with applications to derive the rate of the solution converging to the steady state.

Hypocoercivity for the linear Boltzmann equation with confining forces

This paper is concerned with the hypercoercivity property of solutions to the Cauchy problem on the linear Boltzmann equation with a confining potential force. We obtain the exponential time rate of solutions converging to the steady state under some conditions on both initial data and the potential function. Specifically, initial data is properly chosen such that the conservation laws of mass, total energy and possible partial angular momentums are satisfied for all nonnegative time, and a large class of potentials including some polynomials are allowed. The result also extends the case of parabolic forces considered in [4] to the non-parabolic general case here.

Optimal Decay Rates to Conservation Laws with Diffusion-Type Terms of Regularity-gain and Regularity-loss

We consider the Cauchy problem on nonlinear scalar conservation laws with a diffusion-type source term related to an index $s\in \R$ over the whole space $\R^n$ for any spatial dimension $n\geq 1$. Here, the diffusion-type source term behaves as the usual diffusion term over the low frequency domain while it admits on the high frequency part a feature of regularity-gain and regularity-loss for $s< 1$ and $s>1$, respectively. For all $s\in \R$, we not only obtain the $L^p$-$L^q$ time-decay estimates on the linear solution semigroup but also establish the global existence and optimal time-decay rates of small-amplitude classical solutions to the nonlinear Cauchy problem. In the case of regularity-loss, the time-weighted energy method is introduced to overcome the weakly dissipative property of the equation. Moreover, the large-time behavior of solutions asymptotically tending to the heat diffusion waves is also studied. The current results have general applications to several concrete models arising from physics.

Optimal Large-Time Behavior of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann System in the Whole Space

In this paper we study the large-time behavior of classical solutions to the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system in the whole space $\R^3$. The existence of global in time nearby Maxwellian solutions is known from [34] in 2006. However the asymptotic behavior of these solutions has been a challenging open problem. Building on our previous work [10] on time decay for the simpler Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system, we prove that these solutions converge to the global Maxwellian with the optimal decay rate of $O(t^{-3/2+\frac{3}{2r}})$ in $L^2_ξ(L^r_x)$-norm for any $2\leq r\leq \infty$ if initial perturbation is smooth enough and decays in space-velocity fast enough at infinity. Moreover, some explicit rates for the electromagnetic field tending to zero are also provided.

Optimal Time Decay of the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann System in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$

The Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann System governs the time evolution of the distribution function for the dilute charged particles in the presence of a self-consistent electric potential force through the Poisson equation. In this paper, we are concerned with the rate of convergence of solutions to equilibrium for this system over ${\mathbb{R}}^3$. It is shown that the electric field which is indeed responsible for the lowest-order part in the energy space reduces the speed of convergence and hence the dispersion of this system over the full space is slower than that of the Boltzmann equation without forces, where the exact difference between both power indices in the algebraic rates of convergence is 1/4. For the proof, in the linearized case with a given non-homogeneous source, Fourier analysis is employed to obtain time-decay properties of the solution operator. In the nonlinear case, the combination of the linearized results and the nonlinear energy estimates with the help of the proper Lyapunov-type inequalities leads to the optimal time-decay rate of perturbed solutions under some conditions on initial data.
