A solution for the cosmological constant problem

We consider that the cosmological constant is associated with the vacuum energy density of a particle physics model. In the path integral formalism of euclidean quantum gravity and in the background of the Robertson Walker metric we calculate only the contribution of the matter density to the fluctuating metric. This produces an effective term in the action that acts as a correction to the vacuum energy density of the matter. The method leads to the observed cosmological constant without the need of any fine tuning in the gravity or particle physics sectors.

A theoretical analysis of the doubly radiative decays $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^0γγ$ and $η^\prime\toηγγ$

The scalar and vector meson exchange contributions to the doubly radiative decays $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^0γγ$ and $η^\prime\toηγγ$ are analysed within the Linear Sigma Model and Vector Meson Dominance frameworks, respectively. Predictions for the diphoton invariant mass spectra and the associated integrated branching ratios are given and compared with current available experimental data. Whilst a satisfactory description of the shape of the $η\toπ^{0}γγ$ and $η^\prime\toπ^{0}γγ$ decay spectra is obtained, thus supporting the validity of the approach, the corresponding branching ratios cannot be reproduced simultaneously. A first theoretical prediction for the recently measured $η^\prime\toηγγ$ by the BESIII collaboration is also presented.

Anomaly of a gauge theory under rescaling of the fields

We determine the anomaly associated to an arbitrary scaling of the fields in a quantum gauge theory without making use of the Fujikawa method. We show that this anomaly is dependent on the spin term present in the action and at one loop can be directly extracted from the spin contribution to the one loop effective action. Our results can be readily applied to any gauge theory, supersymmetric or not and agree with previous determination for supersymmetric gauge theories based on the Fujikawa method.

Electromagnetic potentials and radiation of the Proca field created by a massless charge

We study a theory less explored in the literature, that of a massive abelian gauge boson interacting with a massless fermion. In this framework we calculate the electromagnetic potentials created by a point like massless charge. We determine also the radiation associated with a change in the momentum of the charge in the low energy regime. The results show both similarities and discrepancies with respect to quantum electrodynamics.

Note about the spin connection in general relativity

In general relativity the fermions are treated from the perspective of the gauged Lorentz group and by introducing the corresponding gauge fields the spin connection. This procedure is intimately related to the so-called "vielbein" formalism and stems from the general structure that can be associated to a manifold, the affine connection. In this work we derive the correct spin connection based only on the general covariance of the theory, on the gauged Lorentz symmetry and on the known space-time properties of fermion bilinears generalized to the curved space. Our result coincides exactly with the spin connection obtain through the tetrad formalism.

Unimodular gauge fixing in general relativity revisited

We study a slight variation of the unimodular gauge condition which we call "the derivative gauge condition". We show that at the classical level these conditions are completely equivalent up to a surface term. At the quantum level the derivative gauge condition can be easily implemented by analogy with gauge fixing in a quantum gauge theory. This condition might have advantages and disadvantages upon the context.

About the electroweak vacuum and its connection with the quark condensates

We make a change of variable in the standard model Higgs field by a fermion operator and show that the latter is responsible for the electroweak vacuum. By computing the vacuum expectation value of this fermion operator in the path integral formalism we determine a relation among the quark vacuum condensates, the quark masses and the intrinsic scale of the theory. We show that the heavy quark vacuum condensates do not justify the hypothesis of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking with only standard model fermions.

Examining a possible cascade effect in chiral symmetry breaking

We examine a toy model and a cascade effect for confinement and chiral symmetry breaking which consists in several phase transitions corresponding to the formation of bound states and chiral condensates with different number of fermions for a strong group. We analyze two examples: regular QCD where we calculate the "four quark" vacuum condensate and a preon composite model based on QCD at higher scales. In this context we also determine the number of flavors at which the second chiral and confinement phase transitions occur and discuss the consequences.

Higgs boson mass from gauge invariant operators

We make the assumption that the vacuum correlators of the gauge invariant kinetic term of the Higgs doublet are the same before and after the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the theory. Based on this we determine the mass of the standard model Higgs boson at $m_h \approx 125.07$ GeV by considering one loop and the most relevant two loop corrections. This result might suggest that there is a single Higgs boson doublet that contributes to the electroweak symmetry breaking.

Mass Ansatze for the standard model fermions from a composite perspective

We consider a composite model in which the standard model fermions are bound states of elementary spin $\frac{1}{2}$ particles, the preons, situated in the conjugate product representation of the color group. In this framework we propose and analyze two mass Ansatze one for the leptons, the other one for the quarks, based on mass formulae of the Gell-Mann Okubo type. We find that these mass Ansatze can give an adequate description of the known standard model fermion masses.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and Goldstone theorem for composite states revisited

We discuss the well-known phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking for a linear sigma model for scalar and pseudoscalar mesons based on the meson composite structure and the normalization of the quantum states. To test our formulation and validate our approach we give another proof of the Goldstone theorem and derive the corresponding mass eigenstates of the theory. We briefly describe the possible wave function of a meson that leads to the adequate mass eigenstates.

Phase transitions for SU(N) gauge theories with arbitrary number of flavors

We study the phase diagram of an $SU(N)$ gauge theory in terms of the number of colors $N$ and flavors $N_f$ with emphasis on the confinement and chiral symmetry breaking phases. We argue that as opposed to SUSY QCD there is a small region in the $(N,N_f)$ plane where the theory has the chiral symmetry broken but it is unconfined. The possibility of a new phase with strong confinement and chiral symmetry breaking is suggested.

A hierarchy of the quark masses in a top condensate model with multiple Higgses

We discuss the quark masses in a top condensate model where not only two quark but also four quark composite states may exist. We show that the presence of the top color group SU(3)_1\times SU(3)_2 with the correct non anomalous quark representations can justify even in the absence of additional technicolor interactions a hierarchy of the quark masses where the light quark masses have the same size, the charm and bottom masses are higher and similar and the top is the heaviest.

A hint of a strong supersymmetric standard model

We discuss the supersymmetric standard model from the perspective that the up and down Higgs supermultiplets are composite states. We show that a Higgs multiplet in which the scalar states are bound states of two squarks and the corresponding Higgsinos are bound states of a quark and an squark has the correct supersymmetry transformations and may lead to an alternative model which displays dynamical symmetry breaking. We describe this model through an effective Higgs potential which by itself may lead to the correct mass of 125.9 GeV for the lightest Higgs boson and to other neutral scalar masses respecting the experimental constraints.

preprint2014arXiv

A semiclassical approach for the Higgs boson

Starting from the equations of motion of the fields involved in a theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking and by making simple assumptions regarding their behavior we derive simple tree level relations between the mass of the Higgs boson in the theory and the masses of the gauge bosons corresponding to the broken generators. We show that these mass relations have a clear meaning if both the scalars and the gauge bosons are composite states made of two fermions.

Probing scalar mesons in semi-leptonic decays of $D_s^+$, $D^+$ and $D^0$

With the primary motivation of probing the quark substructure of scalar mesons, a generalized linear sigma model for the lowest and the next-to-lowest scalar and pseudoscalar mesons is employed to investigate several semi-leptonic decays of $D$ mesons. The free parameters of the model (in its leading approximation) have been previously determined from fits to mass spectra and various low-energy parameters. With these fixed parameters, the model has already given encouraging predictions for different low-energy decays and scattering, as well as for semileptonic decay channels of $D_s^+$ that include a scalar meson in the final state. In the present work, we apply the same model (in its leading order with the same fixed parameters) to different semi-leptonic decay channels of $D_s^+$, $D^+$ and $D^0$ and thereby further test the model and its predictions for the quark substructure of scalar mesons. We find that these predictions are in reasonable agreement with experiment.

Naturally perturbed S$_3$ neutrinos

We simplify and extend our previous model for the masses and mixing matrix of three Majorana neutrinos based on permutation symmetry $S_3$ and the perturbations which violate this symmetry. The perturbations are arranged such that we get the smaller solar neutrinos mass difference at second order. We work out the corrections to the tribimaximal mixing matrix with the non-zero value for $s_{13}$ and the conventional CP-violating phase. It is shown that the results of the model are comparable with the global analysis of neutrino oscillation data.

Naturalness in a simple two Higgs doublet model

We study the implications of a criterion of naturalness for a simple two Higgs doublet model in the context of the discovery of a Higgs like particle with a mass at 125 GeV. This condition which measures the amount of fine tuning further limits the parameter space of this particular model and together with other phenomenological constraints leads to an allowed range of masses for the other neutral or charged Higgs bosons: H, a^{\pm}, a^0.

Do we need Feynman diagrams for higher orders perturbation theory?

We compute the two and three loop corrections to the beta function for Yang-Mills theories in the background gauge field method and using the background gauge field as the only source. The calculations are based on the separation of the one loop effective potential into zero and positive modes and are entirely analytical. No two or three loop Feynman diagrams are considered in the process.

Chiral Nonet Mixing in pi pi Scattering

Pion pion scattering is studied in a generalized linear sigma model which contains two scalar nonets (one of quark-antiquark type and the other of diquark-antidiquark type) and two corresponding pseudoscalar nonets. An interesting feature concerns the mixing of the four isosinglet scalar mesons which yield poles in the scattering amplitude. Some realism is introduced by enforcing exact unitarity via the K-matrix method. It is shown that a reasonable agreement with experimental data is obtained up to about 1 GeV. The poles in the unitarized scattering amplitude are studied in some detail. The lowest pole clearly represents the sigma meson (or f0(600)) with a mass and decay width around 500 MeV. The second pole invites comparison with the f0(980) which has a mass around 1 GeV and decay width around 100 MeV. The third and fourth poles, resemble some of the isosinglet state in the complicated 1-2 GeV region. Some comparison is made to the situation in the usual SU(3) linear sigma model with a single scalar nonet.

Are three flavors special?

It has become clearer recently that the regular pattern of three flavor nonets describing the low spin meson multiplets seems to require some modification for the case of the spin 0 scalar mesons. One picture which has had some success, treats the scalars in a chiral Lagrangian framework and considers them to populate two nonets. These are, in turn, taken to result from the mixing of two "bare" nonets, one of which is of quark- antiquark type and the other of two quark- two antiquark type. Here we show that such a mixing is, before chiral symmetry breaking terms are included, only possible for three flavors. In other cases, the two types of structure can not have the same chiral symmetry transformation property. Specifically, our criterion would lead one to believe that scalar and pseudoscalar states containing charm would not have "four quark" admixtures. This work is of potential interest for constructing chiral Lagrangians based on exact chiral symmetry which is then broken by well known specific terms. It may also be of interest in studying some kinds of technicolor theories.

Doubly perturbed $S_3$ neutrinos and the $s_{13}$ mixing parameter

We further study a predictive model for the masses and mixing matrix of three Majorana neutrinos. At zeroth order the model yielded degenerate neutrinos and a generalized ``tribimaximal" mixing matrix. At first order the mass splitting was incorporated and the tribimaximal mixing matrix emerged with very small corrections but with a zero value for the parameter $s_{13}$. In the present paper a different, assumed weaker, perturbation is included which gives a non zero value for $s_{13}$ and further corrections to other quantities. These corrections are worked out and their consequences discussed under the simplifying assumption that the conventional CP violation phase vanishes. It is shown that the existing measurements of the parameter $s_{23}$ provide strong bounds on $s_{13}$ in this model.
