Sommes de Gál et applications

We evaluate the asymptotic size of various sums of Gál type, in particular $$S( \mathcal{M}):=\sum_{m,n\in\mathcal{M}} \sqrt{(m,n) \over [m,n]},$$ where $\mathcal{M}$ is a finite set of integers. Elaborating on methods recently developed by Bondarenko and Seip, we obtain an asymptotic formula for $$\log\Big( \sup_{|\mathcal{M}|= N}{S( \mathcal{M})/N}\Big)$$ and derive new lower bounds for localized extreme values of the Riemann zeta-function, for extremal values of some Dirichlet $L$-functions at $s=1/2$, and for large character sums.

On strong and almost sure local limit theorems for a probabilistic model of the Dickman distribution

Let $\{Z_k\}_{k\geqslant 1}$ denote a sequence of independent Bernoulli random variables defined by ${\mathbb P}(Z_k=1)=1/k=1-{\mathbb P}(Z_k=0)$ $(k\geqslant 1)$ and put $T_n:=\sum_{1\leqslant k\leqslant n}kZ_k$. It is then known that $T_n/n$ converges weakly to a real random variable $D$ with density proportional to the Dickman function, defined by the delay-differential equation $u\varrho'(u)+\varrho(u-1)=0$ $(u>1)$ with initial condition $\varrho(u)=1$ $(0\leqslant u\leqslant 1)$. Improving on earlier work, we propose asymptotic formulae with remainders for the corresponding local and almost sure limit theorems.

Small Gál sums and applications

In recent years, maximizing Gál sums regained interest due to a firm link with large values of $L$-functions. In the present paper, we initiate an investigation of small sums of Gál type, with respect to the $L^1$-norm. We also consider the intertwined question of minimizing weighted versions of the usual multiplicative energy. We apply our estimates to: (i) a logarithmic refinement of Burgess' bound on character sums, improving previous results of Kerr, Shparlinski and Yau; (ii) an improvement on earlier lower bounds by Louboutin and the second author for the number of non vanishing theta functions associated to Dirichlet characters; and (iii) new lower bounds for low moments of character sums.

Major arcs and moments of arithmetical sequences

We give estimates for the first two moments of arithmetical sequences in progressions. Instead of using the standard approximation, we work with a generalization of Vaughan's major arcs approximation which is similar to that appearing in earlier work of Browning and Heath-Brown on norm forms. We apply our results to the sequence $τ_k(n)$, and obtain unconditional results in a wide range of moduli.

Entiers friables dans des progressions arithmétiques de grand module

We study the average error term in the usual approximation to the number of $y$-friable integers congruent to $a$ modulo $q$, where $a\neq 0$ is a fixed integer. We show that in the range $\exp\{(\log\log x)^{5/3+\varepsilon}\} \leq y \leq x$ and on average over $q\leq x/M$ with $M\rightarrow \infty$ of moderate size, this average error term is asymptotic to $-|a|Ψ(x/|a|,y)/2x$. Previous results of this sort were obtained by the second author for reasonably dense sequences, however the sequence of $y$-friable integers studied in the current paper is thin, and required the use of different techniques, which are specific to friable integers.
