The dead cone effect in heavy quark jets observed in momentum space and its QCD explanation

The production of a heavy quark is accompanied by gluon bremsstrahlung with angular and momentum spectra predicted by perturbative Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD). The radiation off heavy quarks is predicted to be suppressed for large momentum particles, as a consequence of the angular ``dead cone effect''. In this paper, we studied this effect using data from Z boson decays to c- or b-quarks in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. The momentum spectra for charged particles are reconstructed in the momentum fraction variable $x$ or $ξ=\ln(1/x)$ by removing the decays of the heavy hadrons. We find an increasing suppression of particles with rising $x$ down to a fraction of $\lesssim 1/10$ for particles with $x\gtrsim0.2$ in b-quark and $x\gtrsim0.4$ in c-quark jets in comparison to light quark momentum spectra. The sensitivity to the dead cone effect in the present momentum analysis is larger than in the recently presented angular analysis. The suppression for c- and b-quark fragmentation is in good quantitative agreement with the expectations based on perturbative QCD within the Modified Leading Logarithmic Approximation (MLLA) in the central kinematic region. The data also support a two parameter description in the MLLA of these phenomena (``Limiting Spectrum''). The sensitivity of these measurements to the heavy quark mass is investigated.

In-medium jet shape from energy collimation in parton showers: Comparison with CMS PbPb data at 2.76 TeV

We present the medium-modified energy collimation in the leading-logarithmic approximation (LLA) and next-to-leading-logarithmic approximation (NLLA) of QCD. As a consequence of more accurate kinematic considerations in the argument of the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) fragmentation functions (FFs) we find a new NLLA correction ${\cal O}(α_s)$ which accounts for the scaling violation of DGLAP FFs at small $x$. The jet shape is derived from the energy collimation within the same approximations and we also compare our calculations for the energy collimation with the event generators Pythia 6 and YaJEM for the first time in this paper. The modification of jets by the medium in both cases is implemented by altering the infrared sector using the Borghini-Wiedemann model. The energy collimation and jet shapes qualitatively describe a clear broadening of showers in the medium, which is further supported by YaJEM in the final comparison of the jet shape with CMS PbPb data at center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV. The comparison of the biased versus unbiased YaJEM jet shape with the CMS data shows a more accurate agreement for biased showers and illustrates the importance of an accurate simulation of the experimental jet-finding strategy.

Collimation of energy in medium-modified QCD jets

The collimation of energy inside medium-modified jets is investigated in the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD. The Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution equations are slightly modified by introducing splitting functions enhanced in the infrared sector. As compared to elementary collisions in the vacuum, the angular istribution of the jet energy is found to broaden in QCD media.

Three-particle correlations in QCD jets and beyond

In this paper, we present a more detailed version of our previous work for three-particle correlations in quark and gluon jets [1]. We give theoretical results for this observable in the double logarithmic approximation and the modified leading logarithmic approximation. In both resummation schemes, we use the formalism of the generating functional and solve the evolution equations analytically from the steepest descent evaluation of the one-particle distribution. In addition, in this paper we include predictions beyond the limiting spectrum approximation and study this observable near the hump of the single inclusive distribution. We thus provide a further test of the local parton hadron duality (LPHD) and make predictions for the LHC. The computation of higher rank correlators is presented in the double logarithmic approximation and shown to be rather cumbersome.

Three-particle correlations in QCD parton showers

Three-particle correlations in quark and gluon jets are computed for the first time in perturbative QCD. We give results in the double logarithmic approximation and the modified leading logarithmic approximation. In both resummation schemes, we use the formalism of the generating functional and solve the evolution equations analytically from the steepest descent evaluation of the one-particle distribution. We thus provide a further test of the local parton hadron duality and make predictions for the LHC.

Heavy quark flavour dependence of multiparticle production in QCD jets

After inserting the heavy quark mass dependence into QCD partonic evolution equations, we determine the mean charged hadron multiplicity and second multiplicity correlators of jets produced in high energy collisions. We thereby extend the so-called dead cone effect to the phenomenology of multiparticle production in QCD jets and find that the average multiplicity of heavy-quark initiated jets decreases significantly as compared to the massless case, even taking into account the weak decay products of the leading primary quark. We emphasize the relevance of our study as a complementary check of $b$-tagging techniques at hadron colliders like the Tevatron and the LHC.

Mean multiplicity of light and heavy quark initiated jets

After inserting the heavy quark mass dependence into QCD partonic evolution equations, we determine the mean charged hadron multiplicity of jets produced in high energy collisions. We thereby extend the so-called dead cone effect to the phenomenology of multiparticle production in QCD jets and find that the average multiplicity of heavy-quark initiated jets decreases significantly as compared to the massless case, even taking into account the weak decay products of the leading primary quark. The internal structure of jets at colliders: light and heavy quark inclusive hadronic distributions

In this paper, we report our results on charged hadron multiplicities of heavy quark initiated jets produced in high energy collisions. After implementing the so-called dead cone effect in QCD evolution equations, we find that the average multiplicity decreases significantly as compared to the massless case. Finally, we discuss on the transverse momentum distribution of light quark initiated jets and emphasize on the comparison between our predictions and CDF data.

Collimation of average multiplicity in QCD jets

The collimation of average multiplicity inside quark and gluon jets is investigated in perturbative QCD in the modified leading logarithmic approximation (MLLA). The role of higher order corrections accounting for energy conservation and the running of the coupling constant leads to smaller multiplicity collimation as compared to leading logarithmic approximation (LLA) results. The collimation of jets produced in heavy-ion collisions has also been explored by using medium-modified splitting functions enhanced in the infrared sector. As compared to elementary collisions, the angular distribution of the jet multiplicity is found to broaden in QCD media at all energy scales.

Hadronic single inclusive kt distributions inside one jet beyond MLLA

The hadronic kt-spectrum inside one jet is determined including corrections of relative magnitude sqrt{alpha_s} with respect to the Modified Leading Logarithmic Approximation (MLLA), at and beyond the limiting spectrum (assuming an infrared cut-off Q_0 = Lambda_QCD and Q_0 not = Lambda_QCD). The agreement between our results and preliminary measurements by the CDF collaboration is impressive, much better than at MLLA, pointing out very small overall non-perturbative contributions.

Inclusive hadronic distributions in jets and sub-jets with jet axis from color current

The hadronic $\kt$-spectrum and the gluon to quark average multiplicity ratio $r=N_g/N_q$ inside a high energy sub-jet are determined from a precise definition of the jet axis, including corrections of relative magnitude ${\cal O}(\sqrt{α_s})$ with respect to the Modified Leading Logarithmic Approximation (MLLA), in the limiting spectrum approximation (assuming an infrared cut-off $Q_0 =\lqcd$). The results for the $\kt$-spectrum in the limiting spectrum approximation are found to be, after normalization, in impressive agreement with measurements by the CDF collaboration and the ratio has not been measured yet.

preprint2008arXiv

Next-to-MLLA corrections to single inclusive kt-distributions and 2-particle correlations in a jet

The hadronic kt-spectrum inside a high energy jet is determined including corrections of relative magnitude O{\sqrt{α_s}} with respect to the Modified Leading Logarithmic Approximation (MLLA), in the limiting spectrum approximation (assuming an infrared cut-off Q0 =Lambda_{QCD}) and beyond Q_0\neΛ_{QCD}. The results in the limiting spectrum approximation are found to be, after normalization, in impressive agreement with preliminary measurements by the CDF collaboration, unlike what occurs at MLLA, pointing out small overall non-perturbative contributions. Within the same framework, 2-particle correlations inside a jet are also predicted at NMLLA and compared to previous MLLA calculations.
