Blow up profiles for a quasilinear reaction-diffusion equation with weighted reaction with linear growth

We study the blow up profiles associated to the following second order reaction-diffusion equation with non-homogeneous reaction: $$ \partial_tu=\partial_{xx}(u^m) + |x|^σu, $$ with $σ>0$. Through this study, we show that the non-homogeneous coefficient $|x|^σ$ has a strong influence on the blow up behavior of the solutions. First of all, it follows that finite time blow up occurs for self-similar solutions $u$, a feature that does not appear in the well known autonomous case $σ=0$. Moreover, we show that there are three different types of blow up self-similar profiles, depending on whether the exponent $σ$ is closer to zero or not. We also find an explicit blow up profile. The results show in particular that \emph{global blow up} occurs when $σ>0$ is sufficiently small, while for $σ>0$ sufficiently large blow up \emph{occurs only at infinity}, and we give prototypes of these phenomena in form of self-similar solutions with precise behavior. This work is a part of a larger program of understanding the influence of non-homogeneous weights on the blow up sets and rates.

Classification of extinction profiles for a one-dimensional diffusive hamilton-jacobi equation with critical absorption

A classification of the behavior of the solutions $f(\cdot,a)$ to the ordinary differential equation $(|f'|^{p-2} f')' + f - |f'|^{p-1} = 0$ in $(0,\infty)$ with initial condition $f(0,a)=a$ and $f'(0,a)=0$ is provided, according to the value of the parameter $a>0$, the exponent $p$ ranging in $(1,2)$. There is a threshold value $a_*$ which separates different behaviors of $f(\cdot,a)$: if $a>a_*$ then $f(\cdot,a)$ vanishes at least once in $(0,\infty)$ and takes negative values while $f(\cdot,a)$ is positive in $(0,\infty)$ and decays algebraically to zero as $r\to\infty$ if $a\in (0,a_*)$. At the threshold value, $f(\cdot,a_*)$ is also positive in $(0,\infty)$ but decays exponentially fast to zero as $r\to\infty$. The proof of these results relies on a transformation to a first-order ordinary differential equation and a monotonicity property with respect to $a>0$. This classification is one step in the description of the dynamics near the extinction time of a diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation with critical gradient absorption and fast diffusion.

Asymptotic behavior for the heat equation in nonhomogeneous media with critical density

We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the heat equation in nonhomogeneous media with critical singular density $$ |x|^{-2}\partial_{t}u=Δu, \quad \hbox{in} \ \real^N\times(0,\infty). $$ The asymptotic behavior proves to have some interesting and quite striking properties. We show that there are two completely different asymptotic profiles depending on whether the initial data $u_0$ vanishes at $x=0$ or not. Moreover, in the former the results are true only for radially symmetric solutions, and we provide counterexamples to convergence to symmetric profiles in the general case.

Large time behavior for a porous medium equation in a nonhomogeneous medium with critical density

We study the large time behavior of solutions to the porous medium equation in nonhomogeneous media with critical singular density $$ |x|^{-2}\partial_{t}u=Δu^m, \quad \hbox{in} \ \real^N\times(0,\infty), $$ where $m>1$ and $N\geq3$. The asymptotic behavior proves to have some interesting and striking properties. We show that there are different asymptotic profiles for the solutions, depending on whether the continuous initial data $u_0$ vanishes at $x=0$ or not. Moreover, when $u_0(0)=0$, we show the convergence towards a profile presenting a discontinuity in form of a shockwave, coming from an unexpected asymptotic simplification to a conservation law, while when $u_0(0)>0$, the limit profile remains continuous. These phenomena illustrate the strong effect of the singularity at $x=0$. We improve the time scale of the convergence in sets avoiding the singularity. On the way, we also study the large-time behavior for a porous medium equation with convection which is interesting for itself.
