SMEFT as a slice of HEFT's parameter space

The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) is the parametrization chosen to interpret many modern measurements. We have recently discussed, building on the work of other groups, that its overall framework can be experimentally tested, beyond simply constraining its parameters. This is because the Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT) is somewhat more general, as it does not assume that the Higgs boson $h$ needs to be embedded in a complex doublet $H$ on which the Standard Model (SM) and SMEFT are built. As a result, the HEFT parameter spaces for the various relevant channels contains hypersurfaces over which one may use SMEFT to describe data. If experimental measurements of HEFT's parameters in any of those various channels yield a point outside of any of the hypersurfaces, SMEFT is falsified; meanwhile, its framework remains appropriate (in particular, as long as the SM remains compatible with data). A common necessity of the various possible tests is that processes involving different number of Higgs bosons (maintaining the number and nature of other particles unchanged) need to be contrasted.

Constraining SMEFT operators with associated $hγ$ production in Weak Boson Fusion

We consider the associated production of a Higgs boson and a photon in weak boson fusion in the Standard Model (SM) and the Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT), with the Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks. Analysing events in a cut-based analysis and with multivariate techniques we determine the sensitivity of this process to the bottom-Yukawa coupling in the SM and to possible CP-violation mediated by dimension-6 operators in the SMEFT.

Low energy behaviour of standard model extensions

The integration of heavy scalar fields is discussed in a class of BSM models, containing more that one representation for scalars and with mixing. The interplay between integrating out heavy scalars and the Standard Model decoupling limit is examined. In general, the latter cannot be obtained in terms of only one large scale and can only be achieved by imposing further assumptions on the couplings. Systematic low-energy expansions are derived in the more general, non-decoupling scenario, including mixed tree-loop and mixed heavy-light generated operators. The number of local operators is larger than the one usually reported in the literature.

Study of VBF/VBS in the LHC at 13 TeV, the EFT Approach

We review the current status of vector boson fusion and vector boson scattering studies in the frame of Run-2 of LHC. These processes are equally interesting and challenging, and new ideas have to be applied for their experimental analysis. These channels are optimal for the search of new physics, and therefore we discuss two promising techniques for this purpose: standard model effective field theory and pseudo observables. Regarding their implementation in the analyses, we also discuss briefly how these techniques should be included in the Monte Carlo generators.

Effective field theories and pseudo-observables in the quest for physics beyond the Standard Model

We discuss briefly the kappa framework, proposed originally as a test for the Higgs couplings of the Standard Model (SM). Further, we discuss a generalization of this idea in terms of effective field theory. We sketch how to add dimension 6 operators to the SM Lagrangian and the renormalization process. Finally we show how to study the amplitudes of the resulting model at next-to-leading order and discuss possible experimental approaches.

NLO Higgs Effective Field Theory and kappa-framework

A consistent framework for studying Standard Model deviations is developed. It assumes that New Physics becomes relevant at some scale beyond the present experimental reach and uses the Effective Field Theory approach by adding higher-dimensional operators to the Standard Model Lagrangian and by computing relevant processes at the next-to-leading order, extending the original kappa-framework.
