Partially dissipative one-dimensional hyperbolic systems in the critical regularity setting, and applications

Here we develop a method for investigating global strong solutions of partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the critical regularity setting. Compared to the recent works by Kawashima and Xu, we use hybrid Besov spaces with different regularity exponent in low and high frequency. This allows to consider more general data and to track the exact dependency on the dissipation parameter for the solution. Our approach enables us to go beyond the L^2 framework in the treatment of the low frequencies of the solution, which is totally new, to the best of our knowledge. Focus is on the one-dimensional setting (the multi-dimensional case will be considered in a forthcoming paper) and, for expository purpose, the first part of the paper is devoted to a toy model that may be seen as a simplification of the compressible Euler system with damping. More elaborated systems (including the compressible Euler system with general increasing pressure law) are considered at the end of the paper.

A Frequency Space for the Heisenberg Group

We here revisit Fourier analysis on the Heisenberg group H^d. Whereas, according to the standard definition, the Fourier transform of an integrable function f on H^d is a one parameter family of bounded operators on L 2 (R^d), we define (by taking advantage of basic properties of Hermite functions) the Fourier transform f\_H of f to be a uniformly continuous mapping on the set N^d x N^d xR \ {0} endowed with a suitable distance. This enables us to extend f\_H to the completion of that space, and to get an explicit asymptotic description of the Fourier transform when the 'vertical' frequency tends to 0. We expect our approach to be relevant for adapting to the Heisenberg framework a number of classical results for the Euclidean case that are based on Fourier analysis. As an example, we here establish an explicit extension of the Fourier transform for smooth functions on H^d that are independent of the vertical variable.

Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations in the half-space, with only bounded density

In this paper, we establish the global existence of small solutions to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system in the half-space. The initial density only has to be bounded and close enough to a positive constant, and the initial velocity belongs to some critical Besov space. With a little bit more regularity for the initial velocity, those solutions are proved to be unique. In the last section of the paper, our results are partially extended to the bounded domain case.
