Diquark properties from full QCD lattice simulations

We study diquarks on the lattice in the background of a static quark, in a gauge-invariant formalism with quark masses down to almost physical $m_π$. We determine mass differences between diquark channels as well as diquark-quark mass differences. The lightest and next-to-lightest diquarks have "good" scalar, $\bar{3}_F$, $\bar{3}_c$, $J^P=0^+$, and "bad" axial vector, $6_F$, $\bar{3}_c$, $J^P=1^+$, quantum numbers, and a bad-good mass difference for $ud$ flavors, $198(4)~\rm{MeV}$, in excellent agreement with phenomenological determinations. Quark-quark attraction is found only in the "good" diquark channel. We extract a corresponding diquark size of $\sim 0.6~\rm{fm}$ and perform a first exploration of the "good" diquark shape, which is shown to be spherical. Our results provide quantitative support for modeling the low-lying baryon spectrum using good light diquark effective degrees of freedom.

Good and bad diquark properties and spatial correlations in lattice QCD

We study good, bad and not-even-bad diquarks on the lattice in a gauge-invariant formalism in full QCD. We establish their spectral masses with short extrapolations to the physical point, observing agreement with phenomenological expectations. We find that only the good diquark has attractive quark-quark spatial correlations, with spherical shape and size $\sim0.6$ fm. Our results provide quantitative support for modelling the low-lying baryon spectrum using good light diquark effective degrees of freedom.

Hadron Spectroscopy with Lattice QCD

The status and prospects for investigations of exotic and conventional hadrons with lattice QCD are discussed. The majority of hadrons decay strongly via one or multiple decay-channels, including most of the experimentally discovered exotic hadrons. Despite this difficult challenge, the properties of several hadronic resonances have been determined within lattice QCD. To further discern the spectroscopic properties of various hadrons and to help resolve their nature we present our suggestions for future analytic and lattice studies.

Substructure of Multiquark Hadrons (Snowmass 2021 White Paper)

In recent years there has been a rapidly growing body of experimental evidence for existence of exotic, multiquark hadrons, i.e. mesons which contain additional quarks, beyond the usual quark-antiquark pair and baryons which consist of more than three quarks. In all cases with robust evidence they contain at least one heavy quark Q=c or b, the majority including two heavy quarks. Two key theoretical questions have been triggered by these discoveries: (a) how are quarks organized inside these multiquark states -- as compact objects with all quarks within one confinement volume, interacting via color forces, perhaps with an important role played by diquarks, or as deuteron-like hadronic molecules, bound by light-meson exchange? (b) what other multiquark states should we expect? The two questions are tightly intertwined. Each of the interpretations provides a natural explanation of parts of the data, but neither explains all of the data. It is quite possible that both kinds of structures appear in Nature. It may also be the case that certain states are superpositions of the compact and molecular configurations. This Whitepaper brings together contributions from many leading practitioners in the field, representing a wide spectrum of theoretical interpretations. We discuss the importance of future experimental and phenomenological work, which will lead to better understandingof multiquark phenomena in QCD.

A ChPT estimate of the strong-isospin-breaking contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

First-principles lattice determinations of the Standard Model expectation for the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon have become sufficiently precise that further improvement requires including strong and electromagnetic isospin-breaking effects. We provide a continuum estimate of the strong isospin-breaking contribution, $a_μ^{SIB}$, using $SU(3)$ chiral perturbation theory. The result is shown to be dominated by resonance-region contributions encoded in a single low-energy constant whose value is known from flavor-breaking hadronic $τ$ decay sum rules. Implications of the form of the result for lattice determinations of $a_μ^{SIB}$ are also discussed.

Charmed-Bottom Mesons from Lattice QCD

We present ground state spectra of mesons containing a charm and a bottom quark. For the charm quark we use overlap valence quarks while a non-relativistic formulation is utilized for the bottom quark on a background of 2+1+1 flavors HISQ gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration. The hyperfine splitting between $1S$ states of $B_c$ mesons is found to be $56^{+4}_{-3}$ MeV. We also study the baryons containing only charm and bottom quarks and predict their ground state masses. Results are obtained at three lattice spacings.

Dark matter from one-flavor SU(2) gauge theory

SU(2) gauge theory with a single fermion in the fundamental representation is a minimal non-Abelian candidate for the dark matter sector, which is presently missing from the standard model. Having only a single flavor provides a natural mechanism for stabilizing dark matter on cosmological timescales. Preliminary lattice results are presented and discussed in the context of dark matter phenomenology.

Determining the QCD coupling from lattice vacuum polarization

The QCD coupling appears in the perturbative expansion of the current-current two-point (vacuum polarization) function. Any lattice calculation of vacuum polarization is plagued by several competing non-perturbative effects at small momenta and by discretization errors at large momenta. We work in an intermediate region, computing the vacuum polarization for many off-axis momentum directions on the lattice. Having many momentum directions provides a way to monitor and account for lattice artifacts. Our results are competitive with, and have certain systematic advantages over, the alternate phenomenological determination of the strong coupling from the same light quark vacuum polarization produced by sum rule analyses of hadronic tau decay data.

Free-form smearing for bottomonium and B meson spectroscopy

To obtain high-quality results from lattice QCD, it is important to use operators that produce good signals for the quantities of interest. Free-form smearing is a powerful tool that helps to accomplish that goal. The present work introduces a new implementation of free-form smearing that maintains its usefulness and reduces its computational time dramatically. Applications to the mass spectrum of $B$, $B_s$, $B_c$ and bottomonium mesons show the effectiveness of the method. Results are compared with other lattice QCD studies and with experimental data where available. The present work includes the first lattice QCD exploration for some of these mesons.

Low-energy constants and condensates from ALEPH hadronic $τ$ decay data

We determine the NLO chiral low-energy constant $L_{10}^r$, and combinations $C_{12}^r\pm C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r$, $C_{13}^r-C_{62}^r+C_{81}^r$, $C_{61}^r$, and $C_{87}^r$, of the NNLO chiral low-energy constants incorporating recently revised ALEPH results for the non-strange vector ($V$) and axial-vector ($A$) hadronic $τ$ decay distributions and recently updated RBC/UKQCD lattice data for the non-strange $V-A$ two-point function. In the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme, at renormalization scale $μ=770\ {MeV}$, we find $L_{10}^r=-0.00350(17)$, $C_{12}^r+C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r=0.00237(16)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{12}^r-C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r=-0.00056(15)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{13}^r-C_{62}^r+C_{81}^r=0.00046(9)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{61}^r=0.00146(15)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, and $C_{87}^r=0.00510(22)\ {GeV}^{-2}$. With errors here at or below the level expected for contributions of yet higher order in the chiral expansion, the analysis exhausts the possibilities of what can be meaningfully achieved in an NNLO analysis. We also consider the dimension six and dimension eight coefficients in the operator product expansion in the $V-A$ channel.

Low-energy constants from ALEPH hadronic tau decay data

We determined the NLO chiral low-energy constant $L_{10}$, and various combinations of NNLO chiral low-energy constants employing recently revised ALEPH results for the non-strange vector (V) and axial-vector (A) hadronic tau decay distributions and recently updated RBC/UKQCD lattice data for the non-strange V-A two-point function. In this talk, we explain the ingredients of this determination. Our errors are at or below the level expected for contributions of yet higher order in the chiral expansion, suggesting that our results exhaust the possibilities of what can be meaningfully achieved in an NNLO analysis.

A lattice QCD study of generalized gluelumps

Proposals for physics beyond the standard model often include new colored particles at or beyond the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. Any new particle with a sufficient lifetime will bind with standard model gluons and quarks to form a spectrum of new hadrons. Here we focus on colored particles in the octet, decuplet, 27-plet, 28-plet and 35-plet representations of SU(3) color because these can form hadrons without valence quarks. In every case, lattice creation operators are constructed for all angular momentum, parity and charge conjugation quantum numbers. Computations with fully-dynamical lattice QCD configurations produce numerical results for mass splittings within this new hadron spectrum. A previous quenched lattice study explored the octet case for certain quantum number choices, and our findings provide a reassessment of those early results.

Composite (Goldstone) Higgs Dynamics on the Lattice: Spectrum of SU(2) Gauge Theory with two Fundamental Fermions

We study the meson spectrum of the SU(2) gauge theory with two Wilson fermions in the fundamental representation. The theory unifies both Technicolor and composite Goldstone Boson Higgs models of electroweak symmetry breaking. We have calculated the masses of the lightest spin one vector and axial vector mesons. In addition, we have also obtained preliminary results for the mass of the lightest scalar (singlet) meson state. The simulations have been done with multiple masses and two different lattice spacings for chiral and continuum extrapolations. The spin one meson masses set lower limits for accelerator experiments, whereas the scalar meson will mix with a pGB of the theory and produce two scalar states. The lighter of the states is the 125 GeV Higgs boson, and the heavier would be a new yet unobserved scalar state.

Composite Goldstone Dark Matter: Experimental Predictions from the Lattice

We study, via first principles lattice simulations, the nonperturbative dynamics of $SU(2)$ gauge theory with two fundamental Dirac flavors. The model can be used simultaneously as a template for composite Goldstone boson dark matter and for breaking the electroweak symmetry dynamically. We compute the form factor, allowing us to estimate the associated electromagnetic charge radius. Interestingly we observe that the form factor obeys vector meson dominance even for the two color theory. We finally compare the model predictions with dark matter direct detection experiments. We find that the composite Goldstone boson dark matter cross sections is constrained by the most stringent direct-detection experiments. Our results are a foundation for quantitative new composite dynamics relevant for model building, and are of interest to current experiments.

Free-form Smeared Bottomonium Correlation Functions

Gauge-invariant sources with a hydrogen wave function shape are constructed for bottomonium two-point correlation functions using the free-form smearing technique. The bottomonium spectrum, including a first lattice result for the D-wave first-excited state, is extracted from free-form smeared correlation functions. Results are compared with conventional smearing techniques and free-form smearing is found to have the advantage of reduced statistical errors.

Fundamental Composite Higgs Dynamics on the Lattice: SU(2) with Two Flavors

In reference [1] a unified description, both at the effective and fundamental Lagrangian level, of models of composite Higgs dynamics was proposed. In the unified framework the Higgs itself can emerge, depending on the way the electroweak symmetry is embedded, either as a pseudo-Goldstone boson or as a massive excitation of the condensate. The most minimal fundamental description consists of an SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions transforming according to the defining representation of the gauge group. We therefore provide first principle lattice results for the massive spectrum of this theory. We confirm the chiral symmetry breaking phenomenon and determine the lightest spin-one axial and vector masses. The knowledge of the energy scale at which new states will appear at the Large Hadron Collider is of the utmost relevance to guide experimental searches of new physics.

Higgs and W boson spectrum from lattice simulations

The spectrum of energy levels is computed for all available angular momentum and parity quantum numbers in the SU(2)-Higgs model, with parameters chosen to match experimental data from the Higgs-W boson sector of the standard model. Several multi-boson states are observed, with and without linear momentum, and all are consistent with weakly-interacting Higgs and W bosons. The creation operators used in this study are gauge-invariant so, for example, the Higgs operator is quadratic rather than linear in the Lagrangian's scalar field.

Multi-boson spectrum of the SU(2)-Higgs model

Lattice simulations are used to compute the spectrum of energy levels for all angular momentum and parity quantum numbers in the SU(2)-Higgs model, with parameters chosen to match experimental data from the Higgs-W boson sector of the standard model. Creation operators are constructed for all lattice irreducible representations, and a correlation matrix is formed from which the spectrum is extracted using a variational analysis. Many multi-boson states are observed and careful analysis reveals that all are consistent with weakly-interacting Higgs and W bosons.

Higher angular momentum states of bottomonium in lattice NRQCD

On a cubic lattice the zero-momentum meson states have one of 20 possible Lambda^{PC} combinations where Lambda labels the irreducible representation of the octahedral group. Each continuum bottomonium state with specific J^{PC} quantum numbers is contained within one or more of the lattice Lambda^{PC} states. In this work, bottomonium quark-antiquark operators are constructed for all 20 lattice Lambda^{PC} combinations which allows many continuum high angular momentum states to be accessible as ground states of their associated lattice channels. From a dynamical simulation, realistic results are obtained for S-, P-, D-, F- and G-wave bottomonium states.

It is a Graviton! or maybe not

The discovery of Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons is a smoking gun of extra dimensions. Other scenarios, however, could give rise to spin-two resonances of a new strongly-coupled sector and act as impostors. In this paper we prove that a spin-two resonance does not couple to the Standard Model through dimension-four operators. We then show that the massive graviton and its impostor both couple to the Standard Model through the same dimension-five operators. Therefore the spin determination is identical. Nevertheless, we also show that one can use the ratio of branching ratios to photons and to jets for distinguishing between KK gravitons and their impostors. The capacity to distinguish between KK gravitons and impostors is a manifestation of the breakdown of the duality between AdS and strongly-coupled theories.

Light Asymmetric Dark Matter on the Lattice: SU(2) Technicolor with Two Fundamental Flavors

The SU(2) gauge theory with two massless Dirac flavors constitutes the building block of several models of Technicolor. Furthermore it has also been used as a template for the construction of a natural light asymmetric, or mixed type, dark matter candidate. We use explicit lattice simulations to confirm the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking by determining the Goldstone spectrum and therefore show that the dark matter candidate can, de facto, be constituted by a complex Goldstone boson. We also determine the phenomenologically relevant spin-one and spin-zero isovector spectrum and demonstrate that it is well separated from the Goldstone spectrum.

More about excited bottomonium radiative decays

Radiative decays of bottomonium are revisited, focusing on contributions from higher-order relativistic effects. The leading relativistic correction to the magnetic spin-flip operator at the photon vertex is found to be particularly important. The combination of O(v^6) effects in the nonrelativistic QCD action and in the transition operator moves previous lattice results for excited Upsilon decays into agreement with experiment.

Excited Upsilon Radiative Decays

Bottomonium S-wave states were studied using lattice NRQCD. Masses of ground and excited states were calculated using multiexponential fitting to a set of correlation functions constructed using both local and wavefunction-smeared operators. Three-point functions for M1 transitions between vector and pseudoscalar states were computed. Robust signals for transitions involving the first two excited states were obtained. The qualitative features of the transition matrix elements are in agreement with expectations. The calculated values of matrix elements for Y(2S) and Y(3S) decay are considerably larger than values inferred from measured decay widths.

Exploration of the phase structure of $SU(N_c)$ lattice gauge theory with many Wilson fermions at strong coupling

We explore aspects of the phase structure of SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theories at strong coupling with many flavours $N_f$ of Wilson fermions in the fundamental representation, including the relevance to recent searches for a conformal window. The pseudoscalar meson mass, the quark mass and other quantities are observed as functions of the hopping parameter, and we find deviations from the expected analytic dependence, at least for sufficiently large $N_f$. Implications of these effects for the phase structure and for the existence of a (first order) bulk phase and the Aoki phase are discussed in the case of $N_f/N_c \gg 1$.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in a two-doublet lattice Higgs model

An SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two doublets of complex scalar fields is considered. All continuous symmetries are identified and, using the nonperturbative methods of lattice field theory, the phase diagram is mapped out by direct numerical simulation. Two-doublet models contain phase transitions that separate qualitatively distinct regions of the parameter space. In some regions global symmetries are spontaneously broken. For some special choices of the model parameters, the symmetry-breaking order parameter is calculated. The pattern of symmetry breaking is verified further through observation of Goldstone bosons.

Exploration of SU(N_c) gauge theory with many Wilson fermions at strong coupling

We explore aspects of the phase structure of SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theories at strong coupling with many flavours $N_f$ of Wilson fermions in the fundamental representation. The pseudoscalar meson mass as a function of hopping parameter is observed to deviate from the expected analytic dependence, at least for sufficiently large $N_f$. Implications of this effect are discussed, including the relevance to recent searches for an infrared fixed point.

Strange quarks in quenched twisted mass lattice QCD

Two twisted doublets, one containing the up and down quarks and the other containing the strange quark with an SU(2)-flavor partner, are used for studies in the meson sector. The relevant chiral perturbation theory is presented, and quenched QCD simulations (where the partner of the strange quark is not active) are performed. Pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants are computed; the vector and scalar mesons are also discussed. A comparison is made to the case of an untwisted strange quark, and some effects due to quenching, discretization, and the definition of maximal twist are explored.

Charmed and Bottom Baryons from Lattice NRQCD

The mass spectrum of charmed and bottom baryons has been computed on anisotropic lattices using quenched lattice nonrelativistic QCD. Masses are extracted by using mass splittings which are more accurate than masses obtained directly by using the nonrelativistic mass-energy relation. Of particular interest are the mass splittings between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 heavy baryons, and we find that these color hyperfine effects are not suppressed in the baryon sector although they are known to be suppressed in the meson sector. Results are compared with those obtained in a previous NRQCD calculation and with those obtained from a Dirac-Wilson action of the D234 type.

preprint2001arXiv

Charmed baryons in lattice QCD

Masses of singly and doubly charmed baryons are calculated in quenched lattice QCD using an improved action of the D234 type on an anisotropic lattice. The mass differences between spin 3/2 and spin 1/2 baryon states are calculated and compared to mass differences between vector and pseudoscalar mesons. The suppression of spin splittings in mesons containing heavy quarks, characteristic of quenched QCD simulations, is not observed in the baryon sector. The mass dependence of color hyperfine effects is discussed within the context of the quark model and heavy quark effective theory.

Radiative pion capture by a nucleon

The differential cross sections for $π^- p \to γn$ and $π^+ n \to γp$ are computed up to $O(p^3)$ in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT). The expressions at $O(p)$ and $O(p^2)$ have no free parameters. There are three unknown parameters at $O(p^3)$, low energy constants of the HBChPT Lagrangian, which are determined by fitting to experimental data. Two acceptable fits are obtained, which can be separated by comparing with earlier dispersion relation calculations of the inverse process. Expressions for the multipoles, with emphasis on the p-wave multipoles, are obtained and evaluated at threshold. Generally the results obtained from the best of the two fits are in good agreement with the dispersion relation predictions.

Isospin Violation and the Proton's Strange Form Factors

The strange form factors of the proton are basic to an understanding of proton structure, and are presently the focus of many experiments. Before the strangeness effects can be extracted from data, it is necessary to calculate and remove effects due to isospin violation, which exist independently of the strange quark but which contribute nevertheless to the experimentally measured ``strange'' form factors. A discussion of the isospin violating contributions to vector form factors is given here in the context of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.

P-wave heavy-light mesons using NRQCD and D234

The masses of S- and P-wave heavy-light mesons are computed in quenched QCD using a classically and tadpole-improved action on anisotropic lattices. Of particular interest are the splittings among P-wave states, which have not yet been resolved experimentally; even the ordering of these states continues to be discussed in the literature. The present work leads to upper bounds for these splittings, and is suggestive, but not conclusive, about the ordering.

O(1/M^3) effects for heavy-light mesons in lattice NRQCD

The masses of spin-singlet and spin-triplet S-wave mesons containing a single heavy quark are computed in the quenched approximation. The light quark action and gauge field action are both classically-improved and tadpole-improved, and the couplings to the heavy quark are organized by the 1/M expansion of tadpole-improved NRQCD. At each of two lattice spacings, near 0.22fm and 0.26fm, meson masses are obtained for heavy quarks spanning the region between charmed and bottom mesons. Results up to O(1/M), O(1/M^2) and O(1/M^3) are displayed separately, so that the convergence of the heavy quark expansion can be discussed. Also, the effect of each term in the O(1/M^3) contribution is computed individually. For bottom mesons the 1/M-expansion appears to be satisfactory, but the situation for charmed mesons is less clear.

preprint1998arXiv

S-wave charmed mesons in lattice NRQCD

Heavy-light mesons can be studied using the 1/M expansion of NRQCD, provided the heavy quark mass is sufficiently large. Calculations of the S-wave charmed meson masses from a classically and tadpole-improved action are presented. A comparison of O(1/M), O(1/M^2) and O(1/M^3) results allows convergence of the expansion to be discussed. It is shown that the form of discretized heavy quark propagation must be chosen carefully.
