Monopoles, instantons and the Helmholtz equation

In this work we study the dimensional reduction of smooth circle invariant Yang-Mills instantons defined on 4-manifolds which are non-trivial circle fibrations over hyperbolic 3-space. A suitable choice of the 4-manifold metric within a specific conformal class gives rise to singular and smooth hyperbolic monopoles. A large class of monopoles is obtained if the conformal factor satisfies the Helmholtz equation on hyperbolic 3-space. We describe simple configurations and relate our results to the JNR construction, for which we provide a geometric interpretation.

Hyperbolic monopoles from hyperbolic vortices

Certain hyperbolic monopoles and all hyperbolic vortices can be constructed from SO(2) and SO(3) invariant Euclidean instantons, respectively. This observation allows us to describe a large class of hyperbolic monopoles as hyperbolic vortices embedded into $\mathbb{H}^3$ and yields a remarkably simple relation between the two Higgs fields. This correspondence between vortices and monopoles gives new insight into the geometry of the spectral curve and the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles. It also allows an explicit construction of the fields of a hyperbolic monopole invariant under a $\mathbb{Z}$ action, which we compare to periodic monopoles in Euclidean space.

Geometry of Periodic Monopoles

BPS monopoles on $\mathbb{R}^2\times S^1$ correspond, via the generalized Nahm transform, to certain solutions of the Hitchin equations on the cylinder $\mathbb{R}\times S^1$. The moduli space M of two monopoles with their centre-of-mass fixed is a 4-dimensional manifold with a natural hyperkähler metric, and its geodesics correspond to slow-motion monopole scattering. The purpose of this paper is to study the geometry of M in terms of the Nahm/Hitchin data, i.e. in terms of structures on $\mathbb{R}\times S^1$. In particular, we identify the moduli, derive the asymptotic metric on M, and discuss several geodesic surfaces and geodesics on M. The latter include novel examples of monopole dynamics.

Periodic Monopoles from Spectral Curves

We consider $\text{SU}(2)$ Bogomolny equations on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\hat{S}^1$ and use the spectral curve defined by the holonomy in the periodic direction to approximate the fields in the limit of large size to period ratio. Symmetries of the Nahm transform allow a study of the effective two dimensional dynamics, which is compared with known results on the full moduli space. The techniques are applied to systems of higher charge and higher rank gauge group, allowing a direct comparison to other periodic Yang-Mills systems.
