Signature invariants of monomial ideals

Let $I$ be a monomial ideal of a polynomial ring $R=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ over a field $K$ and let ${\rm sgn}(I)$ be its signature ideal. If $I$ is not a principal ideal, we show that the depth of $R/I$ is the depth of $R/{\rm sgn}(I)$, and the regularity of $R/{\rm sgn}(I)$ is at most the regularity of $R/I$. For ideals of height at least $2$, we show that the height and the associated primes of $I$ and its signature ${\rm sgn}(I)$ are the same, and we show that $I$ is Cohen--Macaulay (resp. Gorenstein) if and only if ${\rm sgn}(I)$ is Cohen--Macaulay (resp. Gorenstein), and furthermore we show that the v-number of ${\rm sgn}(I)$ is at most the v-number of $I$. We give an algorithm to compute the signature of a monomial ideal using \textit{Macaulay}$2$, and an algorithm to examine given families of monomial ideal by computing their signature ideals and determining which of these are either Cohen--Macaulay or Gorenstein.

Weighted Ehrhart functions

We give an algorithm to compute weighted Ehrhart functions of lattice polytopes for polynomial weights using Lagrange interpolation. We show how to compute generating functions of polynomials using those of unit cubes and Eulerian numbers, and use integer programming to study the algebraic properties of the Ehrhart ring of the $d$-th unit cube. Then we show some applications to weighted Ehrhart functions and enumeration problems.

Evaluation codes and their basic parameters

The aim of this work is to give degree formulas for the generalized Hamming weights of evaluation codes and to show lower bounds for these weights. In particular, we give degree formulas for the generalized Hamming weights of Reed--Muller-type codes, and we determine the minimum distance of toric codes over hypersimplices, and the 1st and 2nd generalized Hamming weights of squarefree evaluation codes.

Linear codes over signed graphs

We give formulas, in terms of graph theoretical invariants, for the minimum distance and the generalized Hamming weights of the linear code generated by the rows of the incidence matrix of a signed graph over a finite field, and for those of its dual code. Then we determine the regularity of the ideals of circuits and cocircuits of a signed graph, and prove an algebraic formula in terms of the multiplicity for the frustration index of an unbalanced signed graph.

On the generalized Hamming weights of certain Reed-Muller-type codes

There is a nice combinatorial formula of P. Beelen and M. Datta for the $r$-th generalized Hamming weight of an affine cartesian code. Using this combinatorial formula we give an easy to evaluate formula to compute the $r$-th generalized Hamming weight for a family of affine cartesian codes. If $\mathbb{X}$ is a set of projective points over a finite field we determine the basic parameters and the generalized Hamming weights of the Veronese type codes on $\mathbb{X}$ and their dual codes in terms of the basic parameters and the generalized Hamming weights of the corresponding projective Reed--Muller-type codes on $\mathbb{X}$ and their dual codes.

Direct products in projective Segre codes

Let K=Fq be a finite field. We introduce a family of projective Reed-Muller-type codes called projective Segre codes. Using commutative algebra and linear algebra methods, we study their basic parameters and show that they are direct products of projective Reed-Muller-type codes. As a consequence we recover some results on projective Reed-Muller-type codes over the Segre variety and over projective tori.

Regularity of the vanishing ideal over a parallel composition of paths

Let G be a graph obtained by taking r>=2 paths and identifying all first vertices and identifying all the last vertices. We compute the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of the quotient S/I(X), where S is the polynomial ring on the edges of G and I(X) is the vanishing ideal of the projective toric subset parameterized by G. The case we consider is the first case where the regularity was unknown, following earlier computations (by several authors) of the regularity when G is a tree, cycle, complete graph or complete bipartite graph, but specially in light of the reduction of the computation of the regularity in the bipartite case to the computation of the regularity of the blocks of G. We also prove new inequalities relating the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of S/I(X) with the combinatorial structure of G, for a general graph.

Degree and algebraic properties of lattice and matrix ideals

We study the degree of non-homogeneous lattice ideals over arbitrary fields, and give formulae to compute the degree in terms of the torsion of certain factor groups of Z^s and in terms of relative volumes of lattice polytopes. We also study primary decompositions of lattice ideals over an arbitrary field using the Eisenbud-Sturmfels theory of binomial ideals over algebraically closed fields. We then use these results to study certain families of integer matrices (PCB, GPCB, CB, GCB matrices) and the algebra of their corresponding matrix ideals. In particular, the family of generalized positive critical binomial matrices (GPCB matrices) is shown to be closed under transposition, and previous results for PCB ideals are extended to GPCB ideals. Then, more particularly, we give some applications to the theory of 1-dimensional binomial ideals. If G is a connected graph, we show as a further application that the order of its sandpile group is the degree of the Laplacian ideal and the degree of the toppling ideal. We also use our earlier results to give a structure theorem for graded lattice ideals of dimension 1 in 3 variables and for homogeneous lattices in Z^3 in terms of critical binomial ideals (CB ideals) and critical binomial matrices, respectively, thus complementing a well-known theorem of Herzog on the toric ideal of a monomial space curve.

Regularity and algebraic properties of certain lattice ideals

We study the regularity and the algebraic properties of certain lattice ideals. We establish a map I --> I\~ between the family of graded lattice ideals in an N-graded polynomial ring over a field K and the family of graded lattice ideals in a polynomial ring with the standard grading. This map is shown to preserve the complete intersection property and the regularity of I but not the degree. We relate the Hilbert series and the generators of I and I\~. If dim(I)=1, we relate the degrees of I and I\~. It is shown that the regularity of certain lattice ideals is additive in a certain sense. Then, we give some applications. For finite fields, we give a formula for the regularity of the vanishing ideal of a degenerate torus in terms of the Frobenius number of a semigroup. We construct vanishing ideals, over finite fields, with prescribed regularity and degree of a certain type. Let X be a subset of a projective space over a field K. It is shown that the vanishing ideal of X is a lattice ideal of dimension 1 if and only if X is a finite subgroup of a projective torus. For finite fields, it is shown that X is a subgroup of a projective torus if and only if X is parameterized by monomials. We express the regularity of the vanishing ideal over a bipartie graph in terms of the regularities of the vanishing ideals of the blocks of the graph.

The Degree and regularity of vanishing ideals of algebraic toric sets over finite fields

Let X* be a subset of an affine space A^s, over a finite field K, which is parameterized by the edges of a clutter. Let X and Y be the images of X* under the maps x --> [x] and x --> [(x,1)] respectively, where [x] and [(x,1)] are points in the projective spaces P^{s-1} and P^s respectively. For certain clutters and for connected graphs, we were able to relate the algebraic invariants and properties of the vanishing ideals I(X) and I(Y). In a number of interesting cases, we compute its degree and regularity. For Hamiltonian bipartite graphs, we show the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture. We give optimal bounds for the regularity when the graph is bipartite. It is shown that X* is an affine torus if and only if I(Y) is a complete intersection. We present some applications to coding theory and show some bounds for the minimum distance of parameterized linear codes for connected bipartite graphs.

Toric ideals generated by circuits

Let I be the toric ideal of a homogeneous normal configuration. We prove that I is generated by circuits if and only if each unbalanced circuit of I has a "connector" which is a linear combination of circuits with a square-free term. In particular if each circuit of I with non-square-free terms is balanced, then I is generated by circuits. As a consequence we prove that the toric ideal of a normal edge subring of a multigraph is generated by circuits with a square-free term.

Vanishing ideals over graphs and even cycles

Let X be an algebraic toric set in a projective space over a finite field. We study the vanishing ideal, I(X), of X and show some useful degree bounds for a minimal set of generators of I(X). We give an explicit description of a set of generators of I(X), when X is the algebraic toric set associated to an even cycle or to a connected bipartite graph with pairwise disjoint even cycles. In this case, a fomula for the regularity of I(X) is given. We show an upper bound for this invariant, when X is associated to a (not necessarily connected) bipartite graph. The upper bound is sharp if the graph is connected. We are able to show a formula for the length of the parameterized linear code associated with any graph, in terms of the number of bipartite and non-bipartite components.

Associated primes of powers of edge ideals

Let G be a graph and let I be its edge ideal. Our main result shows that the sets of associated primes of the powers of I form an ascending chain. It is known that the sets of associated primes of I(i) and intcl(I(i)) stabilize for large i, where "intcl" denotes integral closure and I(i) denotes the i-th power of I. We show that for edge ideals their corresponding stable sets are equal. To show our main result we use a classical result of Berge from matching theory and certain notions from combinatorial optimization.

Combinatorics of Cremona monomial maps

One studies Cremona monomial maps by combinatorial means. Among the results is a simple integer matrix theoretic proof that the inverse of a Cremona monomial map is also defined by monomials of fixed degree, and moreover, the set of monomials defining the inverse can be obtained explicitly in terms of the initial data. A neat consequence is drawn for the plane Cremona monomial group, in particular the known result saying that a plane Cremona (monomial) map and its inverse have the same degree. Included is a discussion about the computational side and/or implementation of the combinatorial invariants stemming from these questions.

On the vanishing ideal of an algebraic toric set and its parameterized linear codes

Let K be a finite field and let X be a subset of a projective space, over the field K, which is parameterized by monomials arising from the edges of a clutter. We show some estimates for the degree-complexity, with respect to the revlex order, of the vanishing ideal I(X) of X. If the clutter is uniform, we classify the complete intersection property of I(X) using linear algebra. We show an upper bound for the minimum distance of certain parameterized linear codes along with certain estimates for the algebraic invariants of I(X).

Rees cones and monomial rings of matroids

Using linear algebra methods we study certain algebraic properties of monomial rings and matroids. Let I be a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field. If the Rees cone of I is quasi-ideal, we express the normalization of the Rees algebra of I in terms of an Ehrhart ring. We introduce the basis Rees cone of a matroid (or a polymatroid) and study their facets. Some applications to Rees algebras are presented. It is shown that the basis monomial ideal of a matroid (or a polymatroid) is normal.

Combinatorics of symbolic Rees algebras of edge ideals of clutters

Let C be a clutter and let I be its edge ideal. We present a combinatorial description of the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra Rs(I) of I. It is shown that the minimal generators of Rs(I) are in one to one correspondence with the irreducible parallelizations of C. From our description some major results on symbolic Rees algebras of perfect graphs and clutters will follow. As a byproduct, we give a method, using Hilbert bases, to compute all irreducible parallelizations of C along with all the corresponding vertex covering numbers.

Ehrhart clutters: Regularity and Max-Flow Min-Cut

If C is a clutter with n vertices and q edges whose clutter matrix has column vectors V={v1,...,vq}, we call C an Ehrhart clutter if {(v1,1),...,(vq,1)} is a Hilbert basis. Letting A(P) be the Ehrhart ring of P=conv(V), we are able to show that if A is the clutter matrix of a uniform, unmixed MFMC clutter C, then C is an Ehrhart clutter and in this case we provide sharp bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of A(P). Motivated by the Conforti-Cornuejols conjecture on packing problems, we conjecture that if C is both ideal and the clique clutter of a perfect graph, then C has the MFMC property. We prove this conjecture for Meyniel graphs, by showing that the clique clutters of Meyniel graphs are Ehrhart clutters. In much the same spirit, we provide a simple proof of our conjecture when C is a uniform clique clutter of a perfect graph. We close with a generalization of Ehrhart clutters as it relates to total dual integrality.

Systems with the integer rounding property in normal monomial subrings

Let C be a clutter and let A be its incidence matrix. If the linear system x>=0;xA<=1 has the integer rounding property, we give a description of the canonical module and the a-invariant of certain normal subrings associated to C. If the clutter is a connected graph, we describe when the aforementioned linear system has the integer rounding property in combinatorial and algebraic terms using graph theory and the theory of Rees algebras. As a consequence we show that the extended Rees algebra of the edge ideal of a bipartite graph is Gorenstein if and only if the graph is unmixed.

Algebraic and combinatorial properties of ideals and algebras of uniform clutters of TDI systems

Let C be a uniform clutter, i.e., all the edges of C have the same size, and let A be the incidence matrix of C. We denote the column vectors of A by v1,...,vq. The vertex covering number of C, denoted by g, is the smallest number of vertices in any minimal vertex cover of C. Under certain conditions we prove that C is vertex critical. If C satisfies the max-flow min-cut property, we prove that A diagonalizes over the integers to an identity matrix and that v1,...,vq is a Hilbert basis. It is shown that if C has a perfect matching such that C has the packing property and g=2, then A diagonalizes over the integers to an identity matrix. If A is a balanced matrix we prove that any regular triangulation of the cone generated by v1,...,vq is unimodular. Some examples are presented to show that our results only hold for uniform clutters. These results are closely related to certain algebraic properties, such as the normality or torsion freeness, of blowup algebras of edge ideals and to finitely generated abelian groups. They are also related to the theory of Gröbner bases of toric ideals and to Ehrhart rings.

Ring graphs and complete intersection toric ideals

We study the family of graphs whose number of primitive cycles equals its cycle rank. It is shown that this family is precisely the family of ring graphs. Then we study the complete intersection property of toric ideals of bipartite graphs and oriented graphs. An interesting application is that complete intersection toric ideals of bipartite graphs correspond to ring graphs and that these ideals are minimally generated by Groebner bases. We prove that any graph can be oriented such that its toric ideal is a complete intersection with a universal Groebner basis determined by the cycles. It turns out that bipartite ring graphs are exactly the bipartite graphs that have complete intersection toric ideals for any orientation.

Symbolic Rees algebras, vertex covers and irreducible representations of Rees cones

Let G be a simple graph and let J be its ideal of vertex covers. We give a graph theoretical description of the irreducible b-vertex covers of G, i.e., we describe the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra of J. Then we study the irreducible b-vertex covers of the blocker of G, i.e., we study the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra of the edge ideal of G. We give a graph theoretical description of the irreducible binary b-vertex covers of the blocker of G. It is shown that they correspond to irreducible induced subgraphs of G. As a byproduct we obtain a method, using Hilbert bases, to obtain all irreducible induced subgraphs of G. In particular we obtain all odd holes and antiholes. We study irreducible graphs and give a method to construct irreducible b-vertex covers of the blocker of G with high degree relative to the number of vertices of G.

Cohen-Macaulay clutters with combinatorial optimization properties and parallelizations of normal edge ideals

Let C be a uniform clutter and let I=I(C) be its edge ideal. We prove that if C satisfies the packing property (resp. max-flow min-cut property), then there is a uniform Cohen-Macaulay clutter C1 satisfying the packing property (resp. max-flow min-cut property) such that C is a minor of C1. For arbitrary edge ideals of clutters we prove that the normality property is closed under parallelizations. Then we show some applications to edge ideals and clutters which are related to a conjecture of Conforti and Cornuéjols and to max-flow min-cut problems.

Cohen-Macaulay, Shellable and unmixed clutters with a perfect matching of König type

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a clutter with a perfect matching $e_1,...,e_g$ of König type and let $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ be the Stanley-Reisner complex of the edge ideal of $\mathcal{C}$. If all c-minors of $\mathcal{C}$ have a free vertex and $\mathcal{C}$ is unmixed, we show that $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure shellable. We are able to describe, in combinatorial and algebraic terms, when $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure. If $\mathcal{C}$ has no cycles of length 3 or 4, then it is shown that $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure if and only if $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure shellable (in this case $e_i$ has a free vertex for all $i$), and that $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure if and only if for any two edges $f_1,f_2$ of $\mathcal{C}$ and for any $e_i$, one has that $f_1\cap e_i\subset f_2\cap e_i$ or $f_2\cap e_i\subset f_1\cap e_i$. It is also shown that this ordering condition implies that $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure shellable, without any assumption on the cycles of $\mathcal{C}$. Then we prove that complete admissible uniform clutters and their Alexander duals are unmixed. In addition, the edge ideals of complete admissible uniform clutters are facet ideals of shellable simplicial complexes, they are Cohen-Macaulay, and they have linear resolutions. Furthermore if $ \mathcal{C}$ is admissible and complete, then $\mathcal{C}$ is unmixed. We characterize certain conditions that occur in a Cohen-Macaulay criterion for bipartite graphs of Herzog and Hibi, and extend some results of Faridi--on the structure of unmixed simplicial trees--to clutters with the König property without 3-cycles or 4-cycles.

Linear syzygies and birational combinatorics

Let $F$ be a finite set of monomials of the same degree $d\geq 2$ in a polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$ over an arbitrary field $k$. We give some necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the birationality of the ring extension $k[F]\subset R^{(d)}$, where $R^{(d)}$ is the $d${\it th} Veronese subring of $R$. One of our results extends to arbitrary characteristic, in the case of rational monomial maps, a previous syzygy-theoretic birationality criterion in characteristic zero
