Transient de Sitter and Quasi de Sitter States in SO(32) and E_8 x E_8 Heterotic String Theories

One of the long-standing puzzles in string theory has been on the existence of a four-dimensional de Sitter and quasi de Sitter configurations, the latter being defined with a temporally varying dark energy, in E_8 x E_8 and SO(32) heterotic theories. In this work, novel dynamical duality-sequences are devised that provide natural constructions of de Sitter and quasi de Sitter excited states in the aforementioned theories allowing no late-time singularities. The emergent positive dark energies -- including the intriguing possibility of their slow temporal variations -- appear from Borel resumming Gevrey series from the path-integral representations of such states. Additionally, precise ways to handle the equations of motion, Bianchi identities, flux quantizations and anomaly cancellations -- consistent with the underlying axionic cosmology, with the temporal dependence, and with the probability of forming wormholes that connect baby universes -- are presented for the SO(32) and the E_8 x E_8 theories within a framework that systematically incorporates perturbative and non-perturbative corrections in the far infrared. The temporally varying dark energy, which is much more natural in our set-up because of its emergent nature, surprisingly simplifies many of the aforementioned computations. Interestingly, our analysis also provides, probably for the first time, a set-up to consistently embed four-dimensional standard model degrees of freedom at late time in a realistic gravitational background with positive dark energy from string theory.

Geometric Constructions of Two Dimensional (0,2) SUSY Theories

We consider the field theories on multiple stacks of D5 branes wrapped on four cycles of resolved/deformed conifold geometries fibered over a two torus. The central charges of the D5 branes are slightly misaligned when the branes are wrapped on various rigid holomorphic two cycles or when they have different charges with respect to a magnetic flux turned on the two torus. The wrapped D5 branes preserve (0,2) supersymmetry in two dimensions if the Kahler moduli and the magnetic flux are related. Our geometries are T-dual to the brane configurations considered by Kutasov-Lin and we provide a geometric interpretation for their equality between the field theory D-terms and the magnetic fluxes. We also consider the geometric transitions for rigid holomorphic two cycles fibered over a two torus with magnetic flux and discuss the partial breaking of supersymmetry after the geometric transitions.

de Sitter Vacua in Type IIB String Theory: Classical Solutions and Quantum Corrections

We revisit the classical theory of ten-dimensional two-derivative gravity coupled to fluxes, scalar fields, D-branes, anti D-branes and Orientifold-planes. We show that such set-ups do not give rise to a four-dimensional positive curvature spacetime with the isometries of de Sitter spacetime. We further argue that a de Sitter solution in type IIB theory may still be achieved if the higher-order curvature corrections are carefully controlled. Our analysis relies on the derivation of the de Sitter condition from an explicit background solution by going beyond the supergravity limit of type IIB theory. As such this also tells us how the background supersymmetry should be broken and under what conditions D-term uplifting can be realized with non self-dual fluxes.

Flows between Dualities for 3d Chern-Simons Theories

We study Seiberg-like dualities for 3d N=2 theories with flavors in fundamental and adjoint representations. The recent results of Intriligator and Seiberg provide a derivation of an Aharony duality from a Giveon-Kutasov duality. We extend their result to the case of more general theories involving various masses for fundamental quarks and adjoint fields. By fine tuning the vev of a scalar field and using various identifications between gauge groups and their singlet duals, we derive several examples of Aharony dualities. For theories with an adjoint field, we discuss the connection between the Aharony dualities proposed by Kim and Park for theories with multiple Coulomb branches and Giveon-Kutasov-Niarchos dualities.

Gauge/Gravity Duality in Heterotic String Theory

Gravity duals for little string theories --- which give rise to four-dimensional theories that undergo permanent confinement in the infrared --- have not been studied in great detail. We address this question in the framework of heterotic SO(32) and E_8 x E_8 string theory, constructing these backgrounds by wrapping heterotic five-branes on calibrated two-cycles of non-Kahler resolved conifolds. Related to deformations of the underlying little string theories, we find numerous analytic solutions preserving N = 1 supersymmetry in four-dimensions. These theories all have non-abelian global symmetries that generally arise from both the heterotic vector bundle and from certain orbifold states. In the decoupling limit, we argue that the gravity duals are given by non-Kahler manifolds that have both blown-up two-cycles and three-cycles at the origin. We argue this following certain duality sequences that include M-theory torsional manifolds at an intermediate step, which help us to construct new type I' gauge/gravity duality pairs. In the M-theory duality frame, we also elucidate new sequences of flips and flops.

GUT theories from Calabi-Yau 4-folds with SO(10) Singularities

We consider an SO(10) GUT model from F-theory compactified on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau with a D5 singularity. To obtain the matter curves and the Yukawa couplings, we use a global description to resolve the singularity. We identify the vector and spinor matter representations and their Yukawa couplings and we explicitly build the G-fluxes in the global model and check the agreement with the semi-local results. As our bundle is of type SU(2k), some extra conditions need to be applied to match the fluxes.

Supersymmetric Configurations, Geometric Transitions and New Non-Kahler Manifolds

We give a detailed derivation of a supersymmetric configuration of wrapped D5-branes on a two-cycle of a warped resolved conifold. Our analysis reveals that the resolved conifold should support a non-Kahler metric with an SU(3) structure. We use this as a starting point of the geometric transition in type IIB theory. A mirror, and a subsequent flop transition using an intermediate M-theory configuration with a G_2 structure, gives rise to the complete IR geometric transition in type IIA theory. A further mirror transformation gives the type IIB gravity dual of the IR gauge theory on the wrapped D5-branes. Expectedly non-Kahler deformations of the resolved and the deformed conifolds appear as the gravity duals of the confining gauge theories in type IIA and type IIB theories respectively, although in more generic cases these manifolds could also be non-geometric. In the local limit we reproduce precisely the scenarios presented in our earlier works. Our present work should therefore be viewed as providing a supergravity proof of geometric transitions in the full global scenarios in type II theories.

T-branes and Yukawa Couplings

We consider various configurations of T-branes which are non-abelian bound states of branes and were recently introduced by Cecotti, Cordova, Heckman and Vafa. They are a refinement of the concept of monodromic branes featured in phenomenological F-theory models. We are particularly interested in the T-branes corresponding to Z3 and Z4 monodromies, which are used to break E7 or E8 gauge groups to SU(5) GUT. Our results imply that the up-type and down-type Yukawa couplings for the breaking of E7 are zero, whereas up-type and down-type Yukawa couplings, together with right handed neutrino Yukawas are non-zero for the case of the breaking of E8. The dimension four proton decay mediating term is avoided in models with either E7 or E8 breaking.

Toward the Gravity Dual of Heterotic Small Instantons

The question of what happens when the heterotic SO(32) instanton becomes small was answered sometime back by Witten. The heterotic theory develops an enhanced Sp(2k) gauge symmetry for k small instantons, besides the allowed SO(32) gauge symmetry. An interesting question now is to ask what happens when we take the large k limit. In this paper we argue that in some special cases, where Gauss' law allows the large k limit, the dynamics of the large k small instantons can be captured by a dual gravitational description. For the cases that we elaborate in this paper, the gravity duals are non-Kahler manifolds although in general they could be non-geometric. These small instantons are heterotic five-branes and the duality allows us to study the strongly coupled field theories on these five-branes. We review and elaborate on some of the recent observations pointing towards this duality, and argue that in certain cases the gauge/gravity duality may be understood as small instanton transitions under which the instantons smoothen out and consequently lose the Sp(2k) gauge symmetry. This may explain how branes disappear on the dual side and are replaced by fluxes. We analyse the torsion classes before and after the transitions, and discuss briefly how the ADHM sigma model and related vector bundles could be studied for these scenarios.

Codimension-3 Singularities and Yukawa Couplings in F-theory

F-theory is one of the frameworks where all the Yukawa couplings of grand unified theories are generated and their computation is possible. The Yukawa couplings of charged matter multiplets are supposed to be generated around codimension-3 singularity points of a base complex 3-fold, and that has been confirmed for the simplest type of codimension-3 singularities in recent studies. However, the geometry of F-theory compactifications is much more complicated. For a generic F-theory compactification, such issues as flux configuration around the codimension-3 singularities, field-theory formulation of the local geometry and behavior of zero-mode wavefunctions have virtually never been addressed before. We address all these issues in this article, and further discuss nature of Yukawa couplings generated at such singularities. In order to calculate the Yukawa couplings of low-energy effective theory, however, the local descriptions of wavefunctions on complex surfaces and a global characterization of zero-modes over a complex curve have to be combined together. We found the relation between them by re-examining how chiral charged matters are characterized in F-theory compactification. An intrinsic definition of spectral surfaces in F-theory turns out to be the key concept. As a biproduct, we found a new way to understand the Heterotic--F theory duality, which improves the precision of existing duality map associated with codimension-3 singularities.

Metastable Vacua, Geometrical Engineering and MQCD Transitions

We consider the geometrical engineering of the non-supersymmetric metastable vacua of N = 1 super Yang-Mills proposed in hep-th/0602239 and hep-th/0610249. By T-duality they become N = 1 brane configurations. The identifications between gluino condensation and the geometry sizes for the configurations of hep-th/0610249 are studied by proceeding through the usual MQCD transitions. The geometrical description of the Seiberg dualities for the theories of hep-th/0602239 involves new types of modifications of the complex structure for the resolutions of N = 2 singularities.

In the Realm of the Geometric Transitions

We complete the duality cycle by constructing the geometric transition duals in the type IIB, type I and heterotic theories. We show that in the type IIB theory the background on the closed string side is a Kahler deformed conifold, as expected, even though the mirror type IIA backgrounds are non-Kahler (both before and after the transition). On the other hand, the Type I and heterotic backgrounds are non-Kahler. Therefore, on the heterotic side these backgrounds give rise to new torsional manifolds that have not been studied before. We show the consistency of these backgrounds by verifying the torsional equation.

(Anti)symmetric matter and superpotentials from IIB orientifolds

We study the IIB engineering of N=1 gauge theories with unitary gauge group and matter in the adjoint and (anti)symmetric representations. We show that such theories can be obtained as Z2 orientifolds of Calabi-Yau A2 fibrations, and discuss the explicit T-duality transformation to an orientifolded Hanany-Witten construction. The low energy dynamics is described by a geometric transition of the orientifolded background. Unlike previously studied cases, we show that the orientifold 5-`plane' survives the transition, thus bringing a nontrivial contribution to the effective superpotential. We extract this contribution by using matrix model results and compare with geometric data. A Higgs branch of our models recovers the engineering of SO/Sp theories with adjoint matter through an O5-`plane' T-dual to an O6-plane. We show that the superpotential agrees with that produced by engineering through an O5-`plane' dual to an O4-plane, even though the orientifold of this second construction is replaced by fluxes after the transition.

Chiral field theories, Konishi anomalies and matrix models

We study a chiral N=1, U(N) field theory in the context of the Dijkgraaf-Vafa correspondence. Our model contains one adjoint, one conjugate symmetric and one antisymmetric chiral multiplet, as well as eight fundamentals. We compute the generalized Konishi anomalies and compare the chiral ring relations they induce with the loop equations of the (intrinsically holomorphic) matrix model defined by the tree-level superpotential of the field theory. Surprisingly, we find that the matrix model is well-defined only if the number of flavors equals two! Despite this mismatch, we show that the 1/N expansion of the loop equations agrees with the generalized Konishi constraints. This indicates that the matrix model - gauge theory correspondence should generally be modified when applied to theories with net chirality. We also show that this chiral theory produces the same gaugino superpotential as a nonchiral SO(N) model with a single symmetric multiplet and a polynomial superpotential.

Orbifolds, Penrose Limits and Supersymmetry Enhancement

We consider supersymmetric PP-wave limits for different N=1 orbifold geometries of the five sphere S^5 and the five dimensional Einstein manifold T^{1,1}. As there are several interesting ways to take the Penrose limits, the PP-wave geometry can be either maximal supersymmetric N=4 or half-maximal supersymmetric N=2. We discuss in detail the cases AdS_5 x S^5/Z_3, AdS_5 x S^5/(Z_m x Z_n) and AdS_5 x T^{1,1}/(\Z_m \times \Z_n) and we identify the gauge invariant operators which correspond to stringy excitations for the different limits.

Orientifold, Geometric Transition and Large N Duality for SO/Sp Gauge Theories

We extend the large N duality of four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with additional chiral fields and arbitrary superpotential recently proposed by Cachazo, Intriligator and Vafa to the case of SO/Sp gauge groups. By orientifolding the geometric transition, we investigate a large N duality between N=1, SO/Sp supersymmetric theories with arbitrary superpotential and an Abelian N=2 theory with supersymmetry broken to N=1 by electric and magnetic Fayet-Iliopoulos terms.

Conifolds with Discrete Torsion and Noncommutativity

We study D3 branes at orbifolded conifold singularities in the presence of discrete torsion. The vacuum moduli space of open strings becomes non-commutative due to a deformation of the superpotential and is studied via the representation theory of the moduli algebra. It is also shown that the center of the moduli algebra correctly describes the underlying orbifolded conifolds. The field theory can be obtained by a marginal deformation of the ${\cal N} = 1$ gauge theory on D3 branes at conifold singularity, the global symmetry being broken from $SU(2) \times SU(2)$ to $U(1) \times U(1)$. By using the AdS/CFT correspondence we argue that the marginal deformation is related to massless KK modes of NSNS and RR two form reduced on the compact space $T^{1,1}$. We build a $T^2$ fibration of $T^{1,1}$ and show that a D3 brane in the bulk correspond to a D5 brane on the $T^2$ fibre. We also discuss the possible brane construction of the system.

Comments on $SO/Sp$ Gauge Theories from Brane Configurations with an O6 Plane

We use the M theory approach in the presence of an orientifold O6 plane to understand some aspects of the moduli space of vacua for N=1 supersymmetric $SO(N_c)/Sp(N_c)$ gauge theories in four dimensions. By exploiting some general properties of the O6 orientifold, we reproduce some results obtained previously with an orientifold O4 plane when the flavor group arises from the worldvolume dynamics of D6 branes. By using semi-infinite D4 branes instead of D6 branes, we derive the most general form of the rotated curve describing the moduli space of vacua for N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory with massive matter.

Rules for Localized Overlappings and Intersections of p-Branes

We determine an intersection rule for extremal p-branes which are localized in their relative transverse coordinates by solving, in a purely bosonic context, the equations of motion of gravity coupled to a dilaton and n-form field strengths. The unique algebraic rule we obtained does not lead to new solutions while it manages to collect, in a systematic way, most of the solutions (all those compatible with our ansatz) that have appeared in the literature. We then consider bound states of zero binding energy where a third brane is accomodated in the common and overall transverse directions. They are given in terms of non-harmonic functions. A different algebraic rule emerges for these last intersections, being identical to the intersection rule for p-branes which only depend on the overall transverse coordinates. We clarify the origin of this coincidence. The whole set of solutions in ten and eleven dimensional theories is connected by dualities and dimensional reductions. They are related to brane configurations recently used to study non-perturbative phenomena in supersymmetric gauge theories.

Dualities in 4D Theories with Product Gauge Groups from Brane Configurations

We study brane configurations which correspond to N=1 field theories in four dimensions. By inverting the order of the NS 5-branes and D6-branes, a check on dualities in four dimensional theories can be made. We consider a brane configuration which yields electric/magnetic duality for gauge theories with $SO(N_{c1})\times Sp(N_{c2})$ product gauge group. We also discuss the possible extension to any alternating product of SO and Sp groups. The new features arising from the intersection of the NS 5-branes on the orientifold play a crucial role in our construction.

Koszul-Tate Cohomology For an Sp(2)-Covariant Quantization of Gauge Theories with Linearly Dependent Generators

The anti-BRST transformation, in its Sp(2)-symmetric version, for the general case of any stage-reducible gauge theories is implemented in the usual BV approach. This task is accomplished not by duplicating the gauge symmetries but rather by duplicating all fields and antifields of the theory and by imposing the acyclicity of the Koszul-Tate differential. In this way the Sp(2)-covariant quantization can be realised in the standard BV approach and its equivalence with BLT quantization can be proven by a special gauge fixing procedure.

M Theory Fivebrane Interpretation for Strong Coupling Dynamics of SO(N_c) Gauge Theories

We study M theory fivebranes to understand the moduli space of vacua of N=1 supersymmetric SO(N_c) gauge theory with N_f flavors in four dimensions. We discuss how the various branches of this theory arise in the string/M theory brane configurations and compare our results with the ones obtained earlier by Intriligator and Seiberg in the context of field theory. In the M theory approach, we explain the various branches from the asymptotic position of semi-infinite D4 branes in the $w=x^8+i x^9$ direction, which is closely related to the eigenvalues of the meson matrix $M^{ij} = Q^{i}_a Q^{j}_a$ where $Q^{i}_a$ is a squark multiplet ( $i=1, \cdots, 2N_f$ and $ a=1, \cdots, N_c$).In M theory, these branches are explained by observing a new phenomena which did not occur for the gauge groups SU(N_c) or Sp(N_c).
