We briefly review the thermal model predictions related to longitudinal spin polarization of Λ−hyperons emitted from a hot and rotating hadronic medium produced in the non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions.
The physics interpretation of the recent measurements of the spin polarization of Λ hyperons produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is discussed. We suggest that the polarization measured in the Λ rest frame should be projected along the direction of the total angular momentum that is first transformed to the same frame, and only then averaged over Λ's with different momenta in the center-of-mass frame. While this procedure does not affect the current measurements done in a broad transverse-momentum range, it may become important (represent a correction of about 10\%) for the most energetic hyperons under study (with transverse momenta reaching 4-5 GeV/c). The proposed treatment is generally more appropriate for relativistic Λ's. Throughout the paper, we deliver explicit expressions for various boosts, rotations, and transformations of angular distributions, which may help to compare model predictions with the experimental results.
Quantum features of the baryon number fluctuations in subsystems of a hot and dense relativistic gas of fermions are analyzed. We find that the fluctuations in small systems are significantly increased compared to their values known from the statistical physics, and diverge in the limit where the system size goes to zero. The numerical results obtained for a broad range of the thermodynamic parameters expected in heavy-ion collisions are presented. They can be helpful to interpret and shed new light on the experimental data.
Space-time evolution of spin polarization within the framework of hydrodynamics with spin based on de Groot - van Leeuwen - van Weert forms of energy-momentum and spin tensors is studied. Due to the non-boost invariant flow in the system the spin polarization components couple to each other implying some effects on the spin polarization observables. We study transverse-momentum and rapidity dependence of mean spin polarization vector for Λ hyperons. Our results show qualitative agreement for rapidity dependence of the global spin polarization with the experiments and other models. The quadrupole structure of the longitudinal component at midrapidity is not found, however, as compared to the results for Bjorken expansion, some non-trivial signal at forward rapidities is observed.
The propagation properties of spin degrees of freedom are analyzed in the framework of relativistic hydrodynamics with spin based on the de Groot--van Leeuwen--van Weert definitions of the energy-momentum and spin tensors. We derive the analytical expression for the spin wave velocity for arbitrary statistics and show that it goes to half the speed of light in the ultra-relativistic limit. We find that only the transverse degrees of freedom propagate, analogously to electromagnetic waves. Finally, we consider the effect of dissipative corrections and calculate the damping coefficients for the case of Maxwell-Jüttner statistics.
Using classical description of spin degrees of freedom, we extend recent formulation of the perfect-fluid hydrodynamics for spin-polarized fluids to the case including dissipation. Our work is based on the analysis of classical kinetic equations for massive particles with spin-1/2, with the collision terms treated in the relaxation time approximation. The kinetic-theory framework determines the structure of viscous and diffusive terms and allows to explicitly calculate a complete set of new kinetic coefficients that characterize dissipative spin dynamics.
By including the recently introduced thermal shear term that contributes to the spin polarization vector at local equilibrium, we determine longitudinal polarization of Λ hyperons emitted from a hot and rotating hadronic medium using the thermal model with single freeze-out. In our analysis, we consider the RHIC top energies and use the model parameters which were determined in the earlier analyses of particle spectra and elliptic flow. We confirm that, unlike the previous calculations done by using only the thermal vorticity, the thermal shear term alone leads to the correct sign of the quadrupole structure of the longitudinal component of the polarization three-vector measured in experiments. However, we find almost complete cancellation between thermal shear and vorticity terms, which eventually leads to disagreement with the data. To clarify the role played by velocity and temperature gradient terms, we present a systematic analysis of different contributions to the longitudinal polarization.
The concept of the Wigner function is used to construct a semi-classical kinetic theory describing the evolution of the axial-current phase-space density of spin-1/2 particles in the relaxation time approximation. The resulting approach can be used to study spin-polarization effects in relativistic matter, in particular, in heavy-ion collisions. An expression for the axial current based on the classical treatment of spin is also introduced and we show that it is consistent with earlier calculations using Wigner functions. Finally, we derive non-equilibrium corrections to the spin tensor, which are used to define, for the first time, the structure of spin transport coefficients in relativistic matter.
Exact correspondence between Israel-Stewart theory and first-order causal and stable hydrodynamics is established for the boost-invariant massive case with zero baryon density and the same constant relaxation times used in the shear and bulk sectors. Explicit expressions for the temperature dependent regulators are given for the case of a relativistic massive gas. The stability and causality conditions known in the first-order approach are applied and one finds that one of them is violated in this case.
We obtain an exact correspondence between the dynamical equations in Israel-Stewart (IS) theory and first-order causal and stable (FOCS) hydrodynamics for a boost-invariant system with an ideal gas equation of state at finite baryon chemical potential. Explicit expressions for the temperature and chemical potential dependence of the regulators in the FOCS theory are given in terms of the kinetic coefficients and constant relaxation time of the IS theory. Using the correspondence between the IS and FOCS theory, stability conditions for a charged fluid which are known in the FOCS approach are applied and one finds that the IS theory considered is unstable.
We show that the recently formulated causal and stable first-order hydrodynamics has the same dynamics as Israel-Stewart theory for boost-invariant, Bjorken expanding systems with a conformal equation of state and a regulating sector determined by a constant relaxation time. In this case, the general solution of the new first-order formulation can be determined analytically.
We summarize the key ingredients of the recently proposed formalism of relativistic perfect-fluid hydrodynamics with spin. Based on the underlying kinetic theory definitions for the equilibrium distribution functions we obtain the evolution equations governing the system's expansion. Employing Bjorken symmetry we study the spin polarization dynamics of the system.
We analyze algebraic structure of a relativistic semi-classical Wigner function of particles with spin 1/2 and show that it consistently includes information about the spin density matrix both in two-dimensional spin and four-dimensional spinor spaces. This result is subsequently used to explore various forms of equilibrium functions that differ by specific incorporation of spin chemical potential. We argue that a scalar spin chemical potential should be momentum dependent, while its tensor form may be a function of space-time coordinates only. This allows for the use of the tensor form in local thermodynamic relations. We furthermore show how scalar and tensor forms can be linked to each other.
A brief introduction to the statistical hadronization approach to particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is given. In the context of fluid dynamics modeling various aspects of hadron emission at the freeze-out are discussed. Practical applications of the presented concepts are presented within the THERMINATOR Monte-Carlo hadron generator.
We investigate dynamic properties of a plasma whose constituents are confining gluons resulting from the Gribov quantization. In a static formulation, this system reproduces qualitatively the pure-glue equation of state and thereby encodes crucial features of the phase transition. The dynamic description proposed in this work allows us to study non-equilibrium transport phenomena with the inclusion of confinement effects. In particular, we determine the non-equilibrium behaviour of the interaction measure (trace anomaly) and find the form of the bulk viscosity coefficient. The latter may be used in phenomenological applications to heavy-ion collisions.
We compute the gradient expansion for anisotropic hydrodynamics. The results are compared with the corresponding expansion of the underlying kinetic-theory model with the collision term treated in the relaxation time approximation. We find that a recent formulation of anisotropic hydrodynamics based on an anisotropic matching principle yields the first three terms of the gradient expansion in agreement with those obtained for the kinetic theory. This gives further support for this particular hydrodynamic model as a good approximation of the kinetic-theory approach. We further find that the gradient expansion of anisotropic hydrodynamics is an asymptotic series, and the singularities of the analytic continuation of its Borel transform indicate the presence of non-hydrodynamic modes.
The framework of leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics is supplemented with realistic equation of state and self-consistent freeze-out prescription. The model is applied to central proton-nucleus collisions. The results are compared to those obtained within standard Israel-Stewart second-order viscous hydrodynamics. It is shown that the resulting hadron spectra are highly-sensitive to the hydrodynamic approach that has been used.
The one-dimensional non-boost-invariant evolution of the quark-gluon plasma, presumably produced during the early stages of heavy-ion collisions, is analyzed within the frameworks of viscous and anisotropic hydrodynamics. We neglect transverse dynamics and assume homogeneous conditions in the transverse plane but, differently from Bjorken expansion, we relax longitudinal boost invariance in order to study the rapidity dependence of various hydrodynamical observables. We compare the results obtained using several formulations of second-order viscous hydrodynamics with a recent approach to anisotropic hydrodynamics, which treats the large initial pressure anisotropy in a non-perturbative fashion. The results obtained with second-order viscous hydrodynamics depend on the particular choice of the second-order terms included, which suggests that the latter should be included in the most complete way. The results of anisotropic hydrodynamics and viscous hydrodynamics agree for the central hot part of the system, however, they differ at the edges where the approach of anisotropic hydrodynamics helps to control the undesirable growth of viscous corrections observed in standard frameworks.
We calculate leading-order medium photon yields from a quark-gluon plasma using (3+1)-dimensional anisotropic hydrodynamics. Non-equilibrium corrections to the photon rate are taken into account using a self-consistent modification of the particle distribution functions and the corresponding anisotropic hard-loop fermionic self-energies. We present predictions for the high-energy photon spectrum and photon elliptic flow as a function of transverse momentum, shear viscosity, and initial momentum-space anisotropy. Our findings indicate that high-energy photon production is sensitive to the assumed level of initial momentum-space anisotropy of the quark-gluon plasma. As a result, it may be possible to experimentally constrain the early-time momentum-space anisotropy of the quark-gluon plasma generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions using high-energy photon yields.
We introduce a generalised relaxation-time-approximation form of the collision term in the Boltzmann kinetic equation that allows for using different relaxation times for elastic and inelastic collisions. The efficacy of the proposed framework is demonstrated with the numerical calculations that describe systems with different relations between the two relaxation times and the evolution time of the system.
The study of transverse-momentum spectra of quarks and gluons produced by the color electric flux tube decaying through the Schwinger tunneling mechanism is reviewed. The hints for a fast hydrodynamization in the ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are found.
Detailed study of thermalization of the momentum spectra of partons produced via decays of the color flux tubes due to the Schwinger tunneling mechanism is presented. The collisions between particles are included in the relaxation time approximation specified by different values of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. At first we show that, to a good approximation, the transverse-momentum spectra of the produced patrons are exponential, irrespectively from the assumed value of the viscosity of the system and the freeze-out time. This thermal-like behaviour may be attributed to specific properties of the Schwinger tunneling process. In the next step, in order to check the approach of the system towards genuine local equilibrium, we compare the local slope of the model transverse-momentum spectra with the local slope of the fully equilibrated reference spectra characterised by the effective temperature that reproduces the energy density of the system. We find that the viscosity corresponding to the AdS/CFT lower bound is necessary for thermalization of the system within about two fermis.
We study dynamic features of a plasma consisting of gluons whose infrared dynamics is improved by the Gribov-Zwanziger quantization. This approach embodies essential features of color confinement which set the plasma apart from conventional quasiparticle systems in several aspects. Our study focusses on a boost-invariant expansion for in- and out-of-equilibrium settings, which at late times can be characterized by the sound velocity, cs, and the shear, η, and bulk, ζ, viscosities. We obtain explicit expressions for the transport coefficients η and ζ and check that they are consistent with the numerical solutions of the kinetic equation. At high temperature, keeping both the Gribov parameter and the relaxation time constant, we find a scaling ζ/η∝1/3−cs2 which manifests strong breaking of conformal symmetry in contrast to the case of weakly coupled plasmas.
In this proceedings contribution, we review the exact solution of the anisotropic hydrodynamics equations for a system subject to Gubser flow. For this purpose, we use the leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics equations which assume that the distribution function is ellipsoidally symmetric in local-rest-frame momentum. We then prove that the SO(3)_q symmetry in de Sitter space constrains the anisotropy tensor to be of spheroidal form with only one independent anisotropy parameter remaining. As a consequence, the exact solution reduces to the problem of solving two coupled non-linear differential equations. We show that, in the limit that the relaxation time goes to zero, one obtains Gubser's ideal hydrodynamic solution and, in the limit that the relaxation time goes to infinity, one obtains the exact free streaming solution obtained originally by Denicol et al. For finite relaxation time, we solve the equations numerically and compare to the exact solution of the relaxation-time-approximation Boltzmann equation subject to Gubser flow. Using this as our standard, we find that anisotropic hydrodynamics describes the spatio-temporal evolution of the system better than all currently known dissipative hydrodynamics approaches.
A system of equations for anisotropic hydrodynamics is derived that describes a mixture of anisotropic quark and gluon fluids. The consistent treatment of the zeroth, first and second moments of the kinetic equations allows us to construct a new framework with more general forms of the anisotropic phase-space distribution functions than those used before. In this way, the main difficiencies of the previous formulations of anisotropic hydrodynamics for mixtures have been overcome and the good agreement with the exact kinetic-theory results is obtained.
We compute the QGP suppression of Upsilon(1s), Upsilon(2s), Upsilon(3s), chi_b1, and chi_b2 states in sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions. Using the suppression of each of these states, we estimate the inclusive R_AA for the Upsilon(1s) and Upsilon(2s) states as a function of N_part, y, and p_T including the effect of excited state feed down. We find that our model provides a reasonable description of preliminary CMS results for the N_part-, y-, and p_T-dependence of R_AA for both the Upsilon(1s) and Upsilon(2s). Comparing to our previous model predictions, we find a flatter rapidity dependence, thereby reducing some of the tension between our model and ALICE forward-rapidity results for Upsilon(1s) suppression.
We compute dilepton production from the deconfined phase of the quark-gluon plasma using leading-order (3+1)-dimensional anisotropic hydrodynamics. The anisotropic hydrodynamics equa- tions employed describe the full spatiotemporal evolution of the transverse temperature, spheroidal momentum-space anisotropy parameter, and the associated three-dimensional collective flow of the matter. The momentum-space anisotropy is also taken into account in the computation of the dilepton production rate, allowing for a self-consistent description of dilepton production from the quark-gluon plasma. For our final results, we present predictions for high-energy dilepton yields as a function of invariant mass, transverse momentum, and pair rapidity. We demonstrate that high- energy dilepton production is extremely sensitive to the assumed level of initial momentum-space anisotropy of the quark-gluon plasma. As a result, it may be possible to experimentally constrain the early-time momentum-space anisotropy of the quark-gluon plasma generated in relativistic heavy ion collisions using high-energy dilepton yields.
Dilepton production from the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is computed using the leading-order (3+1)-dimensional anisotropic hydrodynamics. It is shown that high-energy dilepton spectrum is sensitive to the initial local-rest-frame momentum-space anisotropy of the QGP. Our findings suggest that it may be possible to constrain the early-time momentum-space anisotropy in relativistic heavy-ion collisions using high-energy dilepton yields.
We use leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics to study an azimuthally-symmetric boost-invariant quark-gluon plasma. We impose a realistic lattice-based equation of state and perform self-consistent anisotropic freeze-out to hadronic degrees of freedom. We then compare our results for the full spatiotemporal evolution of the quark-gluon plasma and its subsequent freeze-out to results obtained using 1+1d Israel-Stewart second-order viscous hydrodynamics. We find that for small shear viscosities, 4 pi eta/s ~ 1, the two methods agree well for nucleus-nucleus collisions, however, for large shear viscosity to entropy density ratios or proton-nucleus collisions we find important corrections to the Israel-Stewart results for the final particle spectra and the total number of charged particles. Finally, we demonstrate that the total number of charged particles produced is a monotonically increasing function of 4 pi eta/s in Israel-Stewart viscous hydrodynamics whereas in anisotropic hydrodynamics it has a maximum at 4 pi eta/s ~ 10. For all 4 pi eta/s > 0, we find that for Pb-Pb collisions Israel-Stewart viscous hydrodynamics predicts more dissipative particle production than anisotropic hydrodynamics.

We present predictions for the high-energy photon and dilepton spectrum and the photon elliptic flow as a function of invariant mass, transverse momentum, shear viscosity, and initial momentum-space anisotropy. Our findings indicate that both high-energy photon and dilepton production are sensitive to the assumed level of initial momentum-space anisotropy of the quark-gluon plasma. In addition, we find that the photon elliptic flow depends on the initial momentum-space anisotropy.
We express the transport coefficients appearing in the second-order evolution equations for bulk viscous pressure and shear stress tensor using Bose-Einstein, Boltzmann, and Fermi-Dirac statistics for the equilibrium distribution function and Grad's 14-moment approximation as well as the method of Chapman-Enskog expansion for the non-equilibrium part. Specializing to the case of transversally homogeneous and boost-invariant longitudinal expansion of the viscous medium, we compare the results obtained using the above methods with those obtained from the exact solution of the massive 0+1d relativistic Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation. We show that compared to the 14-moment approximation, the hydrodynamic transport coefficients obtained by employing the Chapman-Enskog method leads to better agreement with the exact solution of the relativistic Boltzmann equation.
By employing a Chapman-Enskog like iterative solution of the Boltzmann equation in relaxation-time approximation, we derive a new expression for the entropy four-current up to third order in gradient expansion. We show that unlike second-order and third-order entropy four-current obtained using Grad's method, there is a non-vanishing entropy flux in the present third-order expression. We further quantify the effect of the higher-order entropy density in the case of boost-invariant one-dimensional longitudinal expansion of a system. We demonstrate that the results obtained using third-order evolution equation for shear stress tensor, derived by employing the method of Chapman-Enskog expansion, show better agreement with the exact solution of the Boltzmann equation as well as with the parton cascade BAMPS, as compared to those obtained using the third-order equations from the method of Grad's 14-moment approximation.
The plasma consisting of confining gluons resulting from the Gribov quantization of the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory is studied using non-equilibrium fluid dynamical framework. Exploiting the Bjorken symmetry and using linear response theory a general analytic expressions for the bulk and shear viscosity coefficients are derived. It is found that the considered system exhibits a number of properties similar to the strongly-coupled theories, where the conformality is explicitly broken. In particular, it is shown that, in the large temperature limit, bulk to shear viscosity ratio, scales linearly with the difference 1/3−cs2, where cs is the speed of sound. Results obtained from the analysis are in line with the interpretation of the quark-gluon plasma as an almost perfect fluid.
A recently obtained set of the equations for leading-order (3+1)D anisotropic hydrodynamics is tested against exact solutions of the Boltzmann equation with the collisional kernel treated in the relaxation time approximation. In order to perform the detailed comparisons, the new anisotropic hydrodynamics equations are reduced to the boost-invariant and transversally homogeneous case. The agreement with the exact solutions found using the new anisotropic hydrodynamics equations is similar to that found using previous, less general, formulations of anisotropic hydrodynamics. In addition, we find that, when compared to a state-of-the-art second-order viscous hydrodynamics framework, leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics better reproduces the exact solution for the pressure anisotropy and gives comparable results for the bulk pressure evolution. Finally, we compare the transport coefficients obtained using linearized anisotropic hydrodynamics with results obtained using second-order viscous hydrodynamics.
We derive the equations of motion for a system undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal and azimuthally-symmetric transverse "Gubser flow" using leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics. This is accomplished by assuming that the one-particle distribution function is ellipsoidally-symmetric in the momenta conjugate to the de Sitter coordinates used to parameterize the Gubser flow. We then demonstrate that the SO(3)_q symmetry in de Sitter space further constrains the anisotropy tensor to be of spheroidal form. The resulting system of two coupled ordinary differential equations for the de Sitter-space momentum scale and anisotropy parameter are solved numerically and compared to a recently obtained exact solution of the relaxation-time-approximation Boltzmann equation subject to the same flow. We show that anisotropic hydrodynamics describes the spatio-temporal evolution of the system better than all currently known dissipative hydrodynamics approaches. In addition, we prove that anisotropic hydrodynamics gives the exact solution of the relaxation-time approximation Boltzmann equation in the ideal, eta/s -> 0, and free-streaming, eta/s -> infinity, limits.
We derive a system of moment-based dynamical equations that describe the 1+1d space-time evolution of a cylindrically symmetric massive gas undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. Extending previous work, we introduce an explicit degree of freedom associated with the bulk pressure of the system. The resulting form generalizes the ellipsoidal one-particle distribution function appropriate for massless particles to massive particles. Using this generalized form, we obtain a system of partial differential equations that can be solved numerically. In order to assess the performance of this scheme, we compare the resulting anisotropic hydrodynamics solutions with the exact solution of the 0+1d Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation. We find that the inclusion of the bulk degree of freedom improves agreement between anisotropic hydrodynamics and the exact solution for a massive gas.
We solve the one-dimensional boost-invariant kinetic equation for a relativistic massive system with the collision term treated in the relaxation time approximation. The result is an exact integral equation which can be solved numerically by the method of iteration to arbitrary precision. We compare predictions for the shear and bulk viscosities of a massive system with those obtained from the exact solution. Finally, we compare the time evolution of the bulk pressure obtained from our exact solution with results obtained from the dynamical equations of second-order viscous hydrodynamics.
The framework of anisotropic hydrodynamics is generalized to include finite particle masses. Two schemes are introduced and their predictions compared with exact solutions of the kinetic equation in the relaxation time approximation. The first formulation uses the zeroth and first moments of the kinetic equation, whereas the second formulation uses the first and second moments. For the case of one-dimensional boost-invariant expansion, our numerical results indicate that the second formulation yields much better agreement with the exact solutions.
We compute the temporal evolution of the pressure anisotropy and bulk pressure of a massive gas using second-order viscous hydrodynamics and anisotropic hydrodynamics. We then compare our results with an exact solution of the Boltzmann equation for a massive gas in the relaxation time approximation. We demonstrate that, within second-order viscous hydrodynamics, the inclusion of the full set of kinetic coefficients, particularly the shear-bulk couplings, is necessary to properly describe the time evolution of the bulk pressure. We also compare the results of second-order hydrodynamics with those obtained using the anisotropic hydrodynamics approach. We find that anisotropic hydrodynamics and second-order viscous hydrodynamics including the shear-bulk couplings are both able to reproduce the exact evolution with comparable accuracy.
Kinetic equations are used to study thermalization of the anisotropic quark-gluon plasma produced by decays of color flux tubes possibly created at the very early stages of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The decay rates of the initial color tubes are given by the Schwinger formula, while the collision terms are taken in the relaxation-time approximation. By connecting the relaxation time with viscosity we analyze production and thermalization processes in the plasma characterized by different values of the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density.
We derive the form of the viscous corrections to the phase-space distribution function due to the bulk viscous pressure and shear stress tensor using the iterative Chapman-Enskog method. We then calculate the transport coefficients necessary for the second-order hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk viscous pressure and the shear stress tensor. We demonstrate that the transport coefficients obtained using the Chapman-Enskog method are different than those obtained previously using the 14-moment approximation for a finite particle mass. Specializing to the case of boost-invariant and transversally homogeneous longitudinal expansion, we show that the transport coefficients obtained using the Chapman-Enskog method result in better agreement with the exact solution of the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation compared to results obtained in the 14-moment approximation. Finally, we explicitly confirm that the time evolution of the bulk viscous pressure is significantly affected by its coupling to the shear stress tensor.
Based on the exact solution of Boltzmann kinetic equation in the relaxation-time approximation, the precision of the two most recent formulations of relativistic second-order non-conformal viscous hydrodynamics (14-moment approximation and causal Chapman-Enskog method), standard Israel-Stewart theory, and anisotropic hydrodynamics framework, in the simple case of one-dimensional Bjorken expansion, is tested. It is demonstrated that the failure of Israel-Stewart theory in reproducing exact solutions of the Boltzmann kinetic equation occurs due to neglecting and/or choosing wrong forms of some of the second-order transport coefficients. In particular, the importance of shear--bulk couplings in the evolution equations for dissipative quantities is shown. One finds that, in the case of the bulk viscous pressure correction, such coupling terms are as important as the corresponding first-order Navier-Stokes term and must be included in order to obtain, at least qualitative, overall agreement with the kinetic theory.
Due to the rapid longitudinal expansion of the quark-gluon plasma created in relativistic heavy ion collisions, potentially large local rest frame momentum-space anisotropies are generated. The magnitude of these momentum-space anisotropies can be so large as to violate the central assumption of canonical viscous hydrodynamical treatments which linearize around an isotropic background. In order to better describe the early-time dynamics of the quark gluon plasma, one can consider instead expanding around a locally anisotropic background which results in a dynamical framework called anisotropic hydrodynamics. In this proceedings contribution we review the basic concepts of the anisotropic hydrodynamics framework presenting viewpoints from both the phenomenological and microscopic points of view.
We exactly solve the relaxation-time approximation Boltzmann equation for a system which is transversely homogeneous and undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. We compare the resulting exact numerical solution with approximate solutions available in the anisotropic hydrodynamics and second order viscous hydrodynamics frameworks. In all cases studied, we find that the anisotropic hydrodynamics framework is a better approximation to the exact solution than traditional viscous hydrodynamical approaches.
A set of kinetic equations is used to study equilibration of the anisotropic quark-gluon plasma produced by decays of color flux tubes possibly created at the very early stages of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The decay rates of the initial color fields are given by the Schwinger formula, and the collision terms are treated in the relaxation-time approximation. By connecting the relaxation time with viscosity we are able to study production and thermalization processes in the plasma characterized by different values of the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density, eta/s. For the lowest (KSS) value of this ratio, 4 pi eta/s = 1, and realistic initial conditions for the fields, the system approaches the viscous-hydrodynamics regime within 1-2 fm/c. On the other hand, for larger values of the viscosity, 4 pi eta/s greater or equal to 3, the collisions in the plasma become inefficient to destroy collective phenomena which manifest themselves as oscillations of different plasma parameters. The presence of such oscillations brings in differences between the kinetic and hydrodynamic descriptions, which suggest that the viscous-hydrodynamics approach after 1-2 fm/c is not complete if 4 pi eta/s is greater or equal to 3 and should be extended to include dissipative phenomena connected with color conductivity.
The recently developed framework of anisotropic hydrodynamics is generalized to describe the dynamics of coupled quark and gluon fluids. The quark and gluon components of the fluids are characterized by different dynamical anisotropy parameters. The dynamical equations describing such mixtures are derived from kinetic theory with the collisional kernel treated in the relaxation- time approximation allowing for different relaxation times for quarks and gluons. Baryon number conservation is enforced in the quark and anti-quark components of the fluid, but overall parton number non-conservation is allowed in the system. The resulting equations are solved numerically in the (0+1)-dimensional boost-invariant case at zero and finite baryon density.
We exactly solve the one-dimensional boost-invariant Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation for arbitrary shear viscosity. The results are compared with the predictions of viscous and anisotropic hydrodynamics. Studying different non-equilibrium cases and comparing the exact kinetic-theory results to the second-order viscous hydrodynamics results we find that recent formulations of second-order viscous hydrodynamics agree better with the exact solution than the standard Israel-Stewart approach. Additionally, we find that, given the appropriate connection between the kinetic and anisotropic hydrodynamics relaxation times, anisotropic hydrodynamics provides a very good approximation to the exact relaxation time approximation solution.
The framework of anisotropic hydrodynamics is used in 3+1 dimensions to analyze behavior of matter produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The model predictions for the hadronic transverse-momentum spectra, directed and elliptic flows, and the HBT radii are presented. We show that the effects of the initial anisotropy of pressure may be compensated by appropriate adjustment of the initial energy density. In this way, the final hadronic observables become insensitive to the early stage dynamics and the early thermalization puzzle may be circumvented.
We present results of the application of the anisotropic hydrodynamics (aHydro) framework to (2+1)-dimensional boost invariant systems. The necessary aHydro dynamical equations are derived by taking moments of the Boltzmann equation using a momentum-space anisotropic one-particle distribution function. We present a derivation of the necessary equations and then proceed to numerical solutions of the resulting partial differential equations using both realistic smooth Glauber initial conditions and fluctuating Monte-Carlo Glauber initial conditions. For this purpose we have developed two numerical implementations: one which is based on straightforward integration of the resulting partial differential equations supplemented by a two-dimensional weighted Lax-Friedrichs smoothing in the case of fluctuating initial conditions; and another that is based on the application of the Kurganov-Tadmor central scheme. For our final results we compute the collective flow of the matter via the lab-frame energy-momentum tensor eccentricity as a function of the assumed shear viscosity to entropy ratio, proper time, and impact parameter.
We study the oscillations of a uniform longitudinal chromoelectric field in a dynamically-evolving momentum-space anisotropic background in the weak field limit. Evolution equations for the background are derived by taking moments of the Boltzmann equation in two cases: (i) a fixed relaxation time and (ii) a relaxation time that is proportional to the local inverse transverse momentum scale of the plasma. The second case allows us to reproduce 2nd-order viscous hydrodynamical dynamics in the limit of small shear viscosity to entropy ratio. We then linearize the Boltzmann-Vlasov equation in a dynamically-evolving background and obtain an integro-differential evolution equation for the chromoelectric field. We present numerical solutions to this integro-differential equation for a variety of different initial conditions and shear viscosity to entropy density ratios. The dynamical equations obtained are novel in that they include a non-trivial time-dependent momentum-space anisotropic background and the effect of collisional damping for the first time.
A recently developed framework of highly-anisotropic and strongly-dissipative hydrodynamics -- ADHYDRO -- has been introduced and used to analyze the space-time evolution of matter produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The main goal of this analysis was to study the effect of initial highly-anisotropic stages on the final soft hadronic observables typically measured in the experiment. The study was done in the context of the heavy-ion measurements performed at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) in Brookhaven National Laboratory. Starting from the general assumption about the form of the phase-space distribution function, thermodynamic properties of locally anisotropic systems of particles have been studied and the form of the generalized equation of state has been formulated. The dynamic equations determining the evolution of a highly-anisotropic fluid have been introduced. The form of the entropy source related to the mechanisms leading to thermalization of the system has been defined. In the simplest case of purely-longitudinal and boost-invariant expansion, different features of the model have been analyzed. Using the ADHYDRO model in the general (3+1)D and boost-invariant (2+1)D versions, different possible scenarios of early stages of heavy-ion collisions have been analyzed. The results of the ADHYDRO model have been compared to the results obtained from the reference, perfect-fluid hydrodynamic model -- LHYQUID. The results of the hydrodynamic models were coupled to the statistical Monte-Carlo model THERMINATOR. The following conclusions have been drawn: a) All studied observables are almost insensitive to the initial anisotropic stage provided the initial conditions of the evolution are properly readjusted, b) Complete thermalization of matter may take place only at the times of about 1 fm/c. In this way the early thermalization puzzle may be circumvented.
Recently formulated model of highly-anisotropic and strongly dissipative hydrodynamics is used in 3+1 dimensions to study behavior of matter produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We search for possible effects of the initial high anisotropy of pressure on the final soft-hadronic observables. We find that by appropriate adjustment of the initial energy density and/or the initial pseudorapidity distributions, the effects of the initial anisotropy of pressure may be easily compensated and the final hadronic observables become insensitive to early dynamics. Our results indicate that the early thermalization assumption is not necessary to describe hadronic data, in particular, to reproduce the measured elliptic flow v_2. The complete thermalization of matter (local equilibration) may take place only at the times of about 1-2 fm/c, in agreement with the results of microscopic models.
A recently formulated framework of highly-anisotropic and strongly-dissipative hydrodynamics (ADHYDRO) is used to describe the evolution of matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. New developments of the model contain: the inclusion of asymmetric transverse expansion (combined with the longitudinal boost-invariant flow) and comparisons of the model results with the RHIC data, which have become possible after coupling of ADHYDRO with THERMINATOR. Various soft-hadronic observables (the transverse-momentum spectra, the elliptic flow coefficient v_2, and the HBT radii) are calculated for different initial conditions characterized by the value of the initial pressure asymmetry. We find that as long as the initial energy density profile is unchanged the calculated observables remain practically the same. This result indicates the insensitivity of the analyzed observables to the initial anisotropy of pressure and suggests that the complete thermalization of the system may be delayed to easily acceptable times of about 1 fm/c.
Tensors describing boost-invariant and cylindrically symmetric expansion of a relativistic dissipative fluid are decomposed in a suitable chosen basis of projection operators. This leads to a simple set of scalar equations which determine the fluid behavior. As special examples, we discuss the case of the Israel-Stewart theory and the model of highly-anisotropic and strongly-dissipative hydrodynamics ADHYDRO. We also introduce the matching conditions between the ADHYDRO description suitable for the very early stages of heavy-ion collisions and the Israel-Stewart theory applicable for later stages when the system is close to equilibrium.
We address the problem if the early thermalization and HBT puzzles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions may be solved by the assumption that the early dynamics of the produced matter is locally anisotropic. The hybrid model describing the purely transverse hydrodynamic evolution followed by the perfect-fluid hydrodynamic stage is constructed. The transition from the transverse to perfect-fluid hydrodynamics is described by the Landau matching conditions applied at a fixed proper time. The global fit to the RHIC data reproduces the soft hadronic observables (the pion, kaon, and the proton spectra, the pion and kaon elliptic flow, and the pion HBT radii) with the accuracy of about 20%. These results indicate that the assumption of the very fast thermalization may be relaxed. In addition, the presented model suggests that a large part of the inconsistencies between the theoretical and experimental HBT results may be removed.
The model assumptions of the recently formulated framework of highly-anisotropic and strongly-dissipative hydrodynamics (ADHYDRO) are analyzed. In particular, we study dependence of numerical results on different forms of the entropy source and compare our approach with other frameworks describing locally anisotropic fluids. We also discuss the effects of different forms of the initial conditions on the process of isotropization.
We introduce a new framework of highly-anisotropic hydrodynamics that includes dissipation effects. Dissipation is defined by the form of the entropy source that depends on the pressure anisotropy and vanishes for the isotropic fluid. With a simple ansatz for the entropy source obeying general physical requirements, we are led to a non-linear equation describing the time evolution of the anisotropy in purely-longitudinal boost-invariant systems. Matter that is initially highly anisotropic approaches naturally the regime of the perfect fluid. Thus, the resulting evolution agrees with the expectations about the behavior of matter produced at the early stages of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The equilibration is identified with the processes of entropy production.
The recently formulated framework of anisotropic and dissipative hydrodynamics (ADHYDRO) is used to describe non-boost-invariant motion of the fluid created at the early stages of heavy-ion collisions. Very strong initial asymmetries of pressure are reduced by the entropy production processes. By the appropriate choice of the form of the entropy source we can reproduce realistic scenarios for the isotropization expected in heavy-ion collisions. Our previous results are generalized by including the realistic equation of state as the limit of the isotropization processes.
