We briefly review the thermal model predictions related to longitudinal spin polarization of $Λ-$hyperons emitted from a hot and rotating hadronic medium produced in the non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions.
The physics interpretation of the recent measurements of the spin polarization of $Λ$ hyperons produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is discussed. We suggest that the polarization measured in the $Λ$ rest frame should be projected along the direction of the total angular momentum that is first transformed to the same frame, and only then averaged over $Λ$'s with different momenta in the center-of-mass frame. While this procedure does not affect the current measurements done in a broad transverse-momentum range, it may become important (represent a correction of about 10\%) for the most energetic hyperons under study (with transverse momenta reaching 4-5 GeV/c). The proposed treatment is generally more appropriate for relativistic $Λ$'s. Throughout the paper, we deliver explicit expressions for various boosts, rotations, and transformations of angular distributions, which may help to compare model predictions with the experimental results.
Quantum features of the baryon number fluctuations in subsystems of a hot and dense relativistic gas of fermions are analyzed. We find that the fluctuations in small systems are significantly increased compared to their values known from the statistical physics, and diverge in the limit where the system size goes to zero. The numerical results obtained for a broad range of the thermodynamic parameters expected in heavy-ion collisions are presented. They can be helpful to interpret and shed new light on the experimental data.
Space-time evolution of spin polarization within the framework of hydrodynamics with spin based on de Groot - van Leeuwen - van Weert forms of energy-momentum and spin tensors is studied. Due to the non-boost invariant flow in the system the spin polarization components couple to each other implying some effects on the spin polarization observables. We study transverse-momentum and rapidity dependence of mean spin polarization vector for $Λ$ hyperons. Our results show qualitative agreement for rapidity dependence of the global spin polarization with the experiments and other models. The quadrupole structure of the longitudinal component at midrapidity is not found, however, as compared to the results for Bjorken expansion, some non-trivial signal at forward rapidities is observed.
The propagation properties of spin degrees of freedom are analyzed in the framework of relativistic hydrodynamics with spin based on the de Groot--van Leeuwen--van Weert definitions of the energy-momentum and spin tensors. We derive the analytical expression for the spin wave velocity for arbitrary statistics and show that it goes to half the speed of light in the ultra-relativistic limit. We find that only the transverse degrees of freedom propagate, analogously to electromagnetic waves. Finally, we consider the effect of dissipative corrections and calculate the damping coefficients for the case of Maxwell-Jüttner statistics.
Using classical description of spin degrees of freedom, we extend recent formulation of the perfect-fluid hydrodynamics for spin-polarized fluids to the case including dissipation. Our work is based on the analysis of classical kinetic equations for massive particles with spin-1/2, with the collision terms treated in the relaxation time approximation. The kinetic-theory framework determines the structure of viscous and diffusive terms and allows to explicitly calculate a complete set of new kinetic coefficients that characterize dissipative spin dynamics.
By including the recently introduced thermal shear term that contributes to the spin polarization vector at local equilibrium, we determine longitudinal polarization of $Λ$ hyperons emitted from a hot and rotating hadronic medium using the thermal model with single freeze-out. In our analysis, we consider the RHIC top energies and use the model parameters which were determined in the earlier analyses of particle spectra and elliptic flow. We confirm that, unlike the previous calculations done by using only the thermal vorticity, the thermal shear term alone leads to the correct sign of the quadrupole structure of the longitudinal component of the polarization three-vector measured in experiments. However, we find almost complete cancellation between thermal shear and vorticity terms, which eventually leads to disagreement with the data. To clarify the role played by velocity and temperature gradient terms, we present a systematic analysis of different contributions to the longitudinal polarization.
The concept of the Wigner function is used to construct a semi-classical kinetic theory describing the evolution of the axial-current phase-space density of spin-1/2 particles in the relaxation time approximation. The resulting approach can be used to study spin-polarization effects in relativistic matter, in particular, in heavy-ion collisions. An expression for the axial current based on the classical treatment of spin is also introduced and we show that it is consistent with earlier calculations using Wigner functions. Finally, we derive non-equilibrium corrections to the spin tensor, which are used to define, for the first time, the structure of spin transport coefficients in relativistic matter.
Exact correspondence between Israel-Stewart theory and first-order causal and stable hydrodynamics is established for the boost-invariant massive case with zero baryon density and the same constant relaxation times used in the shear and bulk sectors. Explicit expressions for the temperature dependent regulators are given for the case of a relativistic massive gas. The stability and causality conditions known in the first-order approach are applied and one finds that one of them is violated in this case.
We obtain an exact correspondence between the dynamical equations in Israel-Stewart (IS) theory and first-order causal and stable (FOCS) hydrodynamics for a boost-invariant system with an ideal gas equation of state at finite baryon chemical potential. Explicit expressions for the temperature and chemical potential dependence of the regulators in the FOCS theory are given in terms of the kinetic coefficients and constant relaxation time of the IS theory. Using the correspondence between the IS and FOCS theory, stability conditions for a charged fluid which are known in the FOCS approach are applied and one finds that the IS theory considered is unstable.
We show that the recently formulated causal and stable first-order hydrodynamics has the same dynamics as Israel-Stewart theory for boost-invariant, Bjorken expanding systems with a conformal equation of state and a regulating sector determined by a constant relaxation time. In this case, the general solution of the new first-order formulation can be determined analytically.
We summarize the key ingredients of the recently proposed formalism of relativistic perfect-fluid hydrodynamics with spin. Based on the underlying kinetic theory definitions for the equilibrium distribution functions we obtain the evolution equations governing the system's expansion. Employing Bjorken symmetry we study the spin polarization dynamics of the system.
We analyze algebraic structure of a relativistic semi-classical Wigner function of particles with spin 1/2 and show that it consistently includes information about the spin density matrix both in two-dimensional spin and four-dimensional spinor spaces. This result is subsequently used to explore various forms of equilibrium functions that differ by specific incorporation of spin chemical potential. We argue that a scalar spin chemical potential should be momentum dependent, while its tensor form may be a function of space-time coordinates only. This allows for the use of the tensor form in local thermodynamic relations. We furthermore show how scalar and tensor forms can be linked to each other.
A brief introduction to the statistical hadronization approach to particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is given. In the context of fluid dynamics modeling various aspects of hadron emission at the freeze-out are discussed. Practical applications of the presented concepts are presented within the THERMINATOR Monte-Carlo hadron generator.
