Study of adiabatic connection in density functional theory with an accurate wavefunction for 2-electron atoms

Using an accurate semi-analytic wavefunction for two electron atoms, we construct the external potential for varying strength of electron-electron (e-e) interaction. Using this potential we explicitly calculate the energy of their positive ion and show that the ionization-potential of these systems remains unchanged with respect to the strength parameter for e-e interaction. Furthermore, using total energies of these systems as a function of strength parameter, we provide a new perspective into a variety of hybrid functionals.

The Levy-Perdew-Sahni equation for the density: accurate effective potential and self-consistent solution for two-electron atomic systems

Levy-Perdew-Sahni (LPS) provided a proof of the connection between the density and ionization potential of a many-electron system using the equation for the density directly. This equation employs an effective potential which is derived by LPS from the many-electron wavefunction of the system. In this paper, we calculate this potential explicitly by employing an accurate wavefunction for two-electron systems. With this wavefunction connection the LPS equation is then solved self- consistently employing this potential and shown to lead to accurate densities and chemical potentials for these systems.

Highly accurate wavefunctions for two-electron systems using two parameteres

It is shown for two electron atoms that ground-state wavefunctions of the form \begin{equation} Ψ(\vec{r_{1}}, \vec{r_{2}})=ϕ(\vec{r_{1}})ϕ(\vec{r_{2}})(\cosh ar_{1}+\cosh ar_{2})(1+0.5 r_{12}e^{-b r_{12}}) \end{equation} where $\vec{r_{1}}$ and $\vec{r_{2}}$ are the coordinates of two electrons and $r_{12}=|\vec{r_{1}}-\vec{r_{2}}|$, can be made highly accurate by optimizing $a$, $b$ and $ϕ$. This is done by solving a variationally derived equation for $ϕ$ for a given $a$ and $b$ and finding $a$ and $b$ so that the expectation value of the Hamiltonian is minimum. For the set $\{a, b, ϕ\}$ the values for various quantities obtained from the above wavefunction are compared with those given by $204$-parameter wavefunction of Koga et al.[11] and are found to be matching quite accurately(within ppm) with them.
