Catalysis and inverse electric catalysis in a scalar theory

In this article we explore the phase diagram associated to the symmetry breaking of a scalar self interacting theory, induced by temperature and the presence of an external electric field. For such purpose, first we obtain the boson propagator, in the presence of a constant external electric field, both in the weak and strong field strength limits. Novel expansions are derived for the effective potential, valid for the whole range of temperature. We found inverse electric catalysis for the weak field region, i.e. a situation where the critical temperature diminishes as function of the strength of the electric field whereas for a strong field electric catalysis emerges. These behaviors, in the weak and strong intensity sectors, are valid for all possible values of temperature.

Renormalons in a scalar self interacting theory: thermal, thermomagnetic and thermoelectric corrections for all values of temperature

In this article we revisit the discussion of renormalons in the frame of a scalar self-interacting $λϕ^{4}$ theory in the presence of thermomagnetic effects, i.e magnetic and thermal effects. Our results for the evolution of the residues is now given by an explicit analytic expression, valid for all values of temperature, without the necessity of separating the discussion in a low- and a high temperature region analyses. We carry out the same discussion for the case of an external constant electric field, obtaining also in this case an analytic expression for the whole range o temperature. In both cases, the location of the poles in the Borel plane does not change with respect to the vacuum case. Their residues, however, acquire a dependence on temperature and the external field. Results are presented for the evolution of residues in the thermomagnetic and thermoelectric cases. We show a comparison with our previous results in the thermomagnetic case, presenting also in detail the mathematical techniques needed for our analytic expressions to be valid in the whole range of temperature.

Magnetic corrections to the boson self-coupling and boson-fermion coupling in the linear sigma model with quarks

We compute the magnetic field-induced modifications to the boson self-coupling and the boson-fermion coupling, in the static limit, using an effective model of QCD, the linear sigma model with quarks. The former is computed for arbitrary field strengths as well as using the strong field approximation. The latter is obtained in the strong field limit. The arbitrary field result for the boson self-coupling depends on the ultraviolet renormalization scale and this dependence cannot be removed by a simple vacuum subtraction. Using the strong field result as a guide, we find the appropriate choice for this scale and discuss the physical implications. The boson-fermion coupling depends on the Schwinger's phase and we show how this phase can be treated consistently in such a way that the magnetic field induced vertex modification is both gauge invariant and can be written with an explicit factor corresponding to energy-momentum conservation for the external particles. Both couplings show a modest decrease with the field strength.

Thermal corrections to the gluon magnetic Debye mass

We compute the gluon polarization tensor in a thermo-magnetic environment in the strong magnetic field limit at zero and high temperature. The magnetic field effects are introduced using Schwinger's proper time method. Thermal effects are computed in the HTL approximation. At zero temperature, we reproduce the well-known result whereby for a non-vanishing quark mass, the polarization tensor reduces to the parallel structure and its coefficient develops an imaginary part corresponding to the threshold for quark-antiquark pair production. This coefficient is infrared finite and simplifies considerably when the quark mass vanishes. Keeping always the field strength as the largest energy scale, in the high temperature regime we analyze two complementary hierarchies of scales: $q^2\ll m_f^2\ll T^2$ and $m_f^2\ll q^2\ll T^2$. In the latter, we show that the polarization tensor is infrared finite as $m_f$ goes to zero. In the former, we discuss the thermal corrections to the magnetic Debye mass.

Inverse magnetic catalysis from the properties of the QCD coupling in a magnetic field

We compute the vacuum one-loop quark-gluon vertex correction at zero temperature in the presence of a magnetic field. From the vertex function we extract the effective quark-gluon coupling and show that it grows with increasing magnetic field strength. The effect is due to a subtle competition between the color charge associated to gluons and the color charge associated to quarks, the former being larger than the latter. In contrast, at high temperature the effective thermo-magnetic coupling results exclusively from the contribution of the color charge associated to quarks. This produces a decrease of the coupling with increasing field strength. We interpret the results in terms of a geometrical effect whereby the magnetic field induces, on average, a closer distance between the (electrically charged) quarks and antiquarks. At high temperature, since the effective coupling is proportional only to the color charge associated to quarks, such proximity with increasing field strength makes the effective coupling decrease due to asymptotic freedom. In turn, this leads to a decreasing quark condensate. In contrast, at zero temperature both the effective strong coupling and the quark condensate increase with increasing magnetic field. This is due to the color charge associated to gluons dominating over that associated to quarks, with both having the opposite sign. Thus, the gluons induce a kind of screening of the quark color charge, in spite of the quark-antiquark proximity. The implications of these results for the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon are discussed.

The magnetized effective QCD phase diagram

The QCD phase diagram in the temperature versus quark chemical potential plane is studied in the presence of a magnetic field, using the linear sigma model coupled to quarks. It is shown that the decrease of the couplings with increasing field strength obtained in this model leads to the critical temperature for the phase transition to decrease with increasing field intensity (inverse magnetic catalysis). This happens provided that plasma screening is properly accounted for. It is also found that with increasing field strength the location of the critical end point (CEP) in the phase diagram moves toward lower values of the critical quark chemical potential and larger values of the critical temperature. In addition, the CEP approaches the temperature axis for large values of the magnetic field. We argue that a similar behavior is to be expected in QCD, since the physical impact of the magnetic field, regardless of strength, is to produce a spatial dimension reduction, whereby virtual quark-antiquark pairs are closer on average and thus, the strength of their interaction decreases due to asymptotic freedom.

Thermo-magnetic behavior of the quark-gluon vertex

The thermo-magnetic corrections to the quark-gluon vertex in the presence of a weak magnetic field are calculated in the frame of the Hard Thermal Loop approximation. The vertex satisfies a QED-like Ward identity with the quark self-energy calculated within the same approximation. It turns out that only the longitudinal vertex components get modified. The calculation provides a first principles result for the quark anomalous magnetic moment at high temperature in a weak magnetic field. The effective thermo-magnetic quark-gluon coupling shows a decreasing behavior as function of the field strength. This result supports the observation that the behavior of the effective quark-gluon coupling in the presence of a magnetic field is an important ingredient in order to understand the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon recently observed in the lattice QCD simulations.

Weak magnetic field effects on chiral critical temperature in a nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

In this article we study the nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a Gaussian regulator in the chiral limit. Finite temperature effects and the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field are considered. The magnetic evolution of the critical temperature for chiral symmetry restoration is then obtained. Here we restrict ourselves to the case of low magnetic field values, being this a complementary discussion to the exisiting analysis in nonlocal models in the strong magnetic field regime.

Finite temperature quark-gluon vertex with a magnetic field in the Hard Thermal Loop approximation

We compute the thermo-magnetic correction to the quark-gluon vertex in the presence of a weak magnetic field within the Hard Thermal Loop approximation. The vertex satisfies a QED-like Ward identity with the quark self-energy. The only vertex components that get modified are the longitudinal ones. The calculation provides a first principles result for the quark anomalous magnetic moment at high temperature in a weak magnetic field. We extract the effective thermo-magnetic quark-gluon coupling and show that this decreases as a function of the field strength. The result supports the idea that the properties of the effective quark-gluon coupling in the presence of a magnetic field are an important ingredient to understand the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon.

Inverse magnetic catalysis for the chiral transition induced by thermo-magnetic effects on the coupling constant

We compute the one-loop thermo-magnetic corrections to the self-coupling in a model where charged scalars interact also with a constant magnetic field. The calculation is motivated by the possibility that the critical temperature for the chiral phase transition in a magnetic background can be influenced by the dependence of the coupling constant on the magnetic field. We show that the coupling decreases as a function of the field strength. This functional dependence introduces in turn a correction to the boson masses which causes the critical temperature to decrease as a function of the field strength.

Inverse magnetic catalysis in the linear sigma model with quarks

We compute the critical temperature for the chiral transition in the background of a magnetic field in the linear sigma model, including the quark contribution and the thermo-magnetic effects induced on the coupling constants at one loop level. We show that the critical temperature decreases as a function of the field strength. The effect of fermions on the critical temperature is small and the main effect on this observable comes from the charged pions. The findings support the idea that the anticatalysis phenomenon receives a contribution due only to quiral symmetry effects independent of the deconfinement transition.

On the magnetic catalysis and inverse catalysis of phase transitions in the linear sigma model

We consider the evolution of critical temperature both for the formation of a pion condensate as well as for the chiral transition, from the perspective of the linear sigma model, in the background of a magnetic field. We developed the discussion for the pion condensate in one loop approximation for the effective potential getting magnetic catalysis for high values of B, i.e. a raising of the critical temperature with the magnetic field. For the analysis of the chiral restoration, we go beyond this approximation, by taking one loop thermo-magnetic corrections to the couplings as well as plasma screening effects for the boson's masses, expressed through the resumation of ring diagrams. Here we found the opposite behavior, i.e. inverse magnetica catalysis, i.e. a decreasing of the chiral critical temperature as function of the intensity of the magnetic field, which seems to be in agreement with recent results form the lattice community.

The Linear Sigma Model and the formation of a charged pion condensate in the presence of an external magnetic field

We discuss the charged pion condensation phenomenon in the linear sigma model, in the presence of an external uniform magnetic field. The critical temperature is obtained as a function of the external magnetic field, assuming the transition is of second order, by considering a dilute gas at low temperature. As a result we found magnetic anti-catalysis in the Bose-Einstein condensation for lower values of the external magnetic field, and catalysis for higher values of the external magnetic field. This behavior confirms previous results with a single charged scalar field.

Vacuum instability by a chromoelectric field in 2 + 1-dimensions

The problem of vacuum instability and creation of pairs by external fields SU(2) is studied. The effective mass operator has complex eigenvalues implying decay and pair creation. We consider a constant external chromoelectric field and a region in the parameter space where the vaccum becomes unstable and decays in pairs. Although the calculation is done in SU(2) color group it is also valid for SU(3).

The cylindrical δ-potential and the Dirac equation

In this article we discuss the Dirac equation in the presence of an attractive cylindrical δ-shell potential V(ρ)=-aδ(ρ-ρ_0), where ρis the radial coordinate and a>0. We present a detailed discussion on the boundary conditions the wave function has to satisfy when crossing the support of the potential, proceeding then to explore the dependence of the ground state on the parameter a, analyzing the occurrence of supercritical effects. We also apply the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, discussing the non-relativistic limit of this problem.
