Theory for the FCC-ee : Report on the 11th FCC-ee Workshop

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The reports of 2018 and 2019 serve as white papers of the workshop results and subsequent developments.

QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories: challenges and perspectives

We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly-coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

Gauge invariance at work in FDR: H -> gamma gamma

We present the first complete calculation performed within the Four Dimensional Regularization scheme (FDR), namely the loop-induced on-shell amplitude for the Higgs boson decay into two photons in an arbitrary R_csi gauge. FDR is a new technique -free of infinities- for addressing multi-loop calculus, which automatically preserves gauge invariance, allowing for a 4-dimensional computation at the same time. We obtained the same result as that assessed in dimensional regularization, thereby explicitly verifying, in a realistic case, that FDR respects gauge invariance.

Primary Feynman rules to calculate the epsilon-dimensional integrand of any 1-loop amplitude

When using dimensional regularization/reduction the epsilon-dimensional numerator of the 1-loop Feynman diagrams gives rise to rational contributions. I list the set of fundamental rules that allow the extraction of such terms at the integrand level in any theory containing scalars, vectors and fermions, such as the electroweak standard model, QCD and SUSY.

The SM and NLO Multileg and SM MC Working Groups: Summary Report

The 2011 Les Houches workshop was the first to confront LHC data. In the two years since the previous workshop there have been significant advances in both soft and hard QCD, particularly in the areas of multi-leg NLO calculations, the inclusion of those NLO calculations into parton shower Monte Carlos, and the tuning of the non-perturbative parameters of those Monte Carlos. These proceedings describe the theoretical advances that have taken place, the impact of the early LHC data, and the areas for future development.

A proposal for a standard interface between Monte Carlo tools and one-loop programs

Many highly developed Monte Carlo tools for the evaluation of cross sections based on tree matrix elements exist and are used by experimental collaborations in high energy physics. As the evaluation of one-loop matrix elements has recently been undergoing enormous progress, the combination of one-loop matrix elements with existing Monte Carlo tools is on the horizon. This would lead to phenomenological predictions at the next-to-leading order level. This note summarises the discussion of the next-to-leading order multi-leg (NLM) working group on this issue which has been taking place during the workshop on Physics at TeV colliders at Les Houches, France, in June 2009. The result is a proposal for a standard interface between Monte Carlo tools and one-loop matrix element programs.

Automated one-loop calculations: a proof of concept

An algorithm, based on the OPP reduction method, to automatically compute any one-loop amplitude, for all momentum, color and helicity configurations of the external particles, is presented. It has been implemented using the tree-order matrix element code HELAC and the OPP reduction code CutTools. As a demonstration of the potential of the current implementation, results for all sub-processes included in the 2007 Les Houches wish list for LHC, are presented.

Feynman rules for the rational part of the Electroweak 1-loop amplitudes

We present the complete set of Feynman rules producing the rational terms of kind R_2 needed to perform any 1-loop calculation in the Electroweak Standard Model. Our results are given both in the 't Hooft-Veltman and in the Four Dimensional Helicity regularization schemes. We also verified, by using both the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge and the Background Field Method, a huge set of Ward identities -up to 4-points- for the complete rational part of the Electroweak amplitudes. This provides a stringent check of our results and, as a by-product, an explicit test of the gauge invariance of the Four Dimensional Helicity regularization scheme in the complete Standard Model at 1-loop. The formulae presented in this paper provide the last missing piece for completely automatizing, in the framework of the OPP method, the 1-loop calculations in the SU(3) X SU(2) X U(1) Standard Model.

Feynman rules for the rational part of the Electroweak 1-loop amplitudes in the R_xi gauge and in the Unitary gauge

We present the complete set of Feynman rules producing the rational terms of kind R_2 needed to perform any 1-loop calculation in the Electroweak Standard Model. Our formulae are given both in the R_xi gauge and in the Unitary gauge, therefore completing the results in the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge already presented in a previous publication. As a consistency check, we verified, in the case of the process H -> gamma gamma and in a few other physical cases, the independence of the total Rational Part R_1+R_2 on the chosen gauge. In addition, we explicitly checked the equivalence of the limits xi -> infinity after or before the loop momentum integration in the definition of the Unitary gauge at 1-loop.

Production of Light Higgs Pairs in 2-Higgs Doublet Models via the Higgs-strahlung Process at the LHC

At the Large Hadron Collider, we prove the feasibility to detect pair production of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson h of a Type II 2-Higgs Doublet Model through the process q \bar q' --> Vhh (Higgs-strahlung, V=W+-,Z), in presence of two h --> b \bar b decays. We also show that, through such production and decay channels, one has direct access to the following Higgs self-couplings, thus enabling one to distinguish between a standard and the Supersymmetric version of the above model: lambda_(Hhh) -- which constrains the form of the Higgs potential -- as well as lambda_(W+- H+- h) and lambda_(Z A h) -- which are required by gauge invariance. Unfortunately, such claims cannot be extended to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, where the extraction of the same signals is impossible.

Combined analysis of Z' -> t tbar and Z' -> t tbar j production for vector resonance searches at LHC

We have implemented a code for Z' + n jets production in ALPGEN, with Z' decays into several final states, including l+ l- and t tbar. The MLM prescription is used for matching the matrix element with the parton shower, including in this way the leading soft and collinear corrections. In order to demonstrate its capabilities, we perform a combined analysis of Z' -> t tbar and Z' -> t tbar j production for a heavy leptophobic gauge boson. It is found that the effect of the extra jet cannot only be accounted for by a K factor multiplying the leading-order cross section. In fact, the combined analysis for Z' -> t tbar and Z' -> t tbar j presented improves the statistical significance of the signal by 25% (8.55 sigma versus 6.77 sigma for a Z' mass of 1 TeV), compared with the results of an inclusive analysis carried out on the same sample of t tbar + t tbar j events.

Recursive numerical calculus of one-loop tensor integrals

A numerical approach to compute tensor integrals in one-loop calculations is presented. The algorithm is based on a recursion relation which allows to express high rank tensor integrals as a function of lower rank ones. At each level of iteration only inverse square roots of Gram determinants appear. For the phase-space regions where Gram determinants are so small that numerical problems are expected, we give general prescriptions on how to construct reliable approximations to the exact result without performing Taylor expansions. Working in 4+epsilon dimensions does not require an analytic separation of ultraviolet and infrared/collinear divergences, and, apart from trivial integrals that we compute explicitly, no additional ones besides the standard set of scalar one-loop integrals are needed.

b-bbar final states in Higgs production via weak boson fusion at the LHC

We present a study of the Higgs production at the LHC via Weak Boson Fusion, with the Higgs boson decaying into a b-quark pair. A detailed partonic LO calculation of all the potential backgrounds is performed. We conclude that this channel for Higgs production can be extracted from the backgrounds, and present our estimates of the accuracy in the determination of the Hbb Yukawa coupling.

Theoretical issues at LEP2 and LC

After 12 years of glorious data taking LEP has been shut down. During the past two years an incredible effort has been devoted to get more accurate predictions and estimates of the related theoretical uncertainties. Many of the theoretical questions driven by LEP are also relevant at the LC, where predictions will be needed with even higher accuracy. This is particularly true for 4-fermion Physics. In this contribution, I review some of the most important theoretical achievements at LEP in understanding W and Z pair production, 4-fermion + 1 visible photon signatures and in solving problems related with gauge invariance. Issues on single W Physics are covered elsewhere. Part of the presented work is in progress, the final LEP2 analysis still being under way.

QCD corrections to $e^+ e^- \to u~\bar d~s~\bar c$ at Lep 2 and the Next Linear Collider: CC11 at O(α_s)

QCD one-loop corrections to the full gauge invariant set of electroweak diagrams describing the hadronic process $e^+ e^- \to u~\bar d~s~\bar c$ are computed. Four-jet shape variables for $WW$ events are studied at next-to-leading order and the effects of QCD corrections on the determination of the $W$--mass in the hadronic channel at Lep 2 and NLC is discussed. We compare the exact calculation with a ``naive''approach to strong radiative corrections which has been widely used in the literature.
