Late time cosmic acceleration in modified Sáez-Ballester theory

We establish an extended version of the modified Sáez-Ballester (SB) scalar-tensor theory in arbitrary dimensions whose energy momentum tensor as well as potential are pure geometrical quantities. This scenario emerges by means of two scalar fields (one is present in the SB theory and the other is associated with the extra dimension) which widens the scope of the induced-matter theory. Moreover, it bears a close resemblance to the standard Sáez-Ballester scalar-tensor theory, as well as other alternative theories to general relativity, whose construction includes either a minimally or a non-minimally coupled scalar field. However, contrary to those theories, in our framework the energy momentum tensor and the scalar potential are not added by hand, but instead are dictated from the geometry. Concerning cosmological applications, our herein contribution brings a new perspective. We firstly show that the dark energy sector can be naturally retrieved within a strictly geometric perspective, and we subsequently analyze it. Moreover, our framework may provide a hint to understand the physics of lower gravity theories.

Coloring Factors of Substitutive Infinite Words

In this paper, we consider infinite words that arise as fixed points of primitive substitutions on a finite alphabet and finite colorings of their factors. Any such infinite word exhibits a "hierarchal structure" that will allow us to define, under the additional condition of strong recognizability, certain remarkable finite colorings of its factors. In particular, we generalize two combinatorial results by Justin and Pirillo concerning arbitrarily large monochromatic $k$-powers occurring in infinite words, in view of a recent paper by de Luca, Pribavkina and Zamboni, we will give new examples of classes of infinite words $\mathbf{u}$ and finite colorings that do not allow infinite monochromatic factorizations $\mathbf{u}=\mathbf{u}_1\mathbf{u}_2\mathbf{u}_3\ldots$.

Harmonic spheres in outer symmetric spaces, their canonical elements and Weierstrass type representations

Making use of Murakami's classification of outer involutions in a Lie algebra and following the Morse-theoretic approach to harmonic two-spheres in Lie groups introduced by Burstall and Guest, we obtain a new classification of harmonic two-spheres in outer symmetric spaces and a Weierstrass-type representation for such maps. Several examples of harmonic maps into classical outer symmetric spaces are given in terms of meromorphic functions on $S^2$.

Harmonic maps of finite uniton number into $G_2$

We establish explicit formulae for canonical factorizations of extended solutions corresponding to harmonic maps of finite uniton number into the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ in terms of the Grassmannian model for the group of based algebraic loops in $G_2$. A description of the ``Frenet frame data" for such harmonic maps is given. In particular, we show that harmonic spheres into $G_2$ correspond to solutions of certain algebraic systems of quadratic and cubic equations.
