Low Density Neutron Star Matter with Quantum Molecular Dynamics: The Role of Vector Interactions

The effect of isospin-dependent nuclear forces on the inner crust of neutron stars is modeled within the framework of Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD). To successfully control the density dependence of the symmetry energy of neutron-star matter below nuclear saturation density, a coupling potential between the $ω$ and $ρ$ meson fields is introduced. This approach is inspired by the baryon density and isospin density-dependent repulsive Skyrme force of asymmetric nuclear matter. In isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter, the system shows nucleation, as nucleons are arranged into shapes resembling nuclear pasta. The dependence of clusterization in the system on the isospin properties is also explored by calculating two-point correlation functions. We show that, as compared to previous results that did not involve the $ω$-$ρ$ potential, the energy symmetry slope $L$ is successfully controlled by varying the $ω$-$ρ$ coupling strength. Nevertheless, the effect of changing the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy $L$ on the crust-core transition density does not seem significant. To the knowledge of the authors, This is the first implementation of a $ω$-$ρ$ coupling in a QMD model for the inner crust of neutron stars.

The effect of inhomogeneous carbon prices on the cost-optimal design of a simplified European power system

Carbon prices are one of the most prominent methods to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and have been adopted by several countries around the world. However, regionally different carbon prices can lead to carbon leakage. We investigate a simplified European power system where carbon prices are varied with respect to GDP per capita and find that inhomogeneous carbon prices lead to significant carbon leakage due to coal-fired generation remaining a major source of power in Eastern Europe.

GW190814 as a massive rapidly-rotating neutron star with exotic degrees of freedom

In the context of the massive secondary object recently observed in the compact-star merger GW190814, we investigate the possibility of producing massive neutron stars from a few different equation of state models that contain exotic degrees of freedom, such as hyperons and quarks. Our work shows that state-of-the-art relativistic mean field models can generate massive stars reaching $\gtrsim 2.05\,\Msun$, while being in good agreement with gravitational-wave events and x-ray pulsar observations, when quark vector interactions and non-standard self-vector interactions are introduced. In particular, we present a new version of the Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model in which a different quark-deconfinement potential allows for stable stars with a pure quark core. When rapid rotation is considered, our models generate stellar masses that approach, and in some cases surpass $2.5\,\Msun$. We find that in such cases fast rotation does not necessarily suppress exotic degrees of freedom due to changes in stellar central density, but require a larger amount of baryons than what is allowed in the non-rotating stars. This is not the case for pure quark stars, which can easily reach $2.5\,\Msun$ and still possess approximately the same amount of baryons as stable non-rotating stars. We also briefly discuss possible origins for fast rotating stars with a large amount of baryons and their stability, showing how the event GW190814 can be associated with a star containing quarks as one of its progenitors.

The possibility of twin star solutions in a model based on lattice QCD thermodynamics

The properties of compact stars and in particular the existence of twin star solutions are investigated within an effective model that is constrained by lattice QCD thermodynamics. The model is modified at large baryon densities to incorporate a large variety of scenarios of first order phase transitions to a phase of deconfined quarks. This is achieved by matching two different variants of the bag model equation of state, in order to estimate the role of the Bag model parameters on the appearance of a second family of neutron stars. The produced sequences of neutron stars are compared with modern constrains on stellar masses, radii, and tidal deformability from astrophysical observations and gravitational wave analyses. It is found that most of the possible scenarios disfavor a strong phase transition to quark matter and do not support the conjecture of a second family of neutron stars.

Effects of the quark-hadron phase transition on highly magnetized neutron stars

The presence of quark-hadron phase transitions in neutron stars can be related to several interesting phenomena. In particular, previous calculations have shown that fast rotating neutron stars, when subjected to a quark-hadron phase transition in their interiors, could give rise to the backbending phenomenon characterized by a spin-up era. In this work, we use an equation of state composed of two phases, containing nucleons (and leptons) and quarks. The hadronic phase is described in a relativistic mean field formalism that takes many-body forces into account, and the quark phase is described by the MIT bag model with a vector interaction. Stationary and axi-symmetric stellar models are obtained in a self-consistent way by solving numerically the Einstein-Maxwell equations by means of a pseudo-spectral method. As a result, we obtain the interesting backbending phenomenon for fast spinning neutron stars. More importantly, we show that a magnetic field, which is assumed to be axi-symmetric and poloidal, can also be enhanced due to the phase transition from normal hadronic matter to quark matter on highly magnetized neutron stars. Therefore, in parallel to the spin-up era, classes of neutron stars endowed with strong magnetic fields may go through a "magnetic-up era" in their lives.

Many-body forces, isospin asymmetry and dense hyperonic matter

The equation of state (EoS) of asymmetric nuclear matter at high densities is a key topic for the description of matter inside neutron stars. The determination of the properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, such as the symmetry energy ($a_{sym}$) and the slope of the symmetry energy ($L_0$) at saturation density, has been exaustively studied in order to better constrain the nuclear matter EoS. However, differently from symmetric matter properties that are reasonably constrained, the symmetry energy and its slope still large uncertainties in their experimental values. Regarding this subject, some studies point towards small values of the slope of the symmetry energy, while others suggest rather higher values. Such a lack of agreement raised a certain debate in the scientific community. In this paper, we aim to analyse the role of these properties on the behavior of asymmetric hyperonic matter. Using the formalism presented in Ref. (R.O. Gomes et al 2014}, which considers many-body forces contributions in the meson-baryon coupling, we calculate the EoS of asymmetric hyperonic matter and apply it to describe hyperonic matter and hyperon stars.

Effective Field Theory for Neutron Stars with Genuine Many-body Forces

The aim of our contribution is to shed some light on open questions facing the high density nuclear many-body problem. We focus our attention on the conceptual issue of naturalness and its role for the baryon-meson coupling for nuclear matter at high densities. As a guideline for the strengths of the various couplings the concept of naturalness has been adopted. In order to encourage possible new directions of research, we discuss relevant aspects of a relativistic effective theory for nuclear matter with natural parametric couplings and genuine many-body forces. Among other topics, we discuss in this work the connection of this theory with other known effective Quantum Hadrodynamics (QHD) models found in literature and how we can potentially use our approach to describe new physics for neutron stars. We also show some preliminary results for the equation of state, population profiles and mass-radius relation for neutron stars assuming local charge neutrality and beta equilibrium.

Effects of strong magnetic fields on the population of hyperon stars

In this contribution we study the effects of strong magnetic fields on the particle population of neutron stars with hyperon degrees of freedom in their composition. The star matter is described by a multi-component model with parameterized baryon-meson interaction couplings. We study the magnetic effects on the equation of state (EoS) due to the Landau quantization, assuming a density dependent static magnetic field that reaches about $10^{19}\,G$ in the center of the star. The Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are solved in order to understand the dependence of the mass-radius relation and hyperon population on the magnetic field intensity assuming different interaction coupling schemes.

Many-body forces in the equation of state of hyperonic matter

In this work we introduce an extended version of the formalism proposed originally by Taurines et al. that considers the effects of many-body forces simulated by non-linear self-couplings and meson-meson interaction contributions. In this extended version of the model, we assume that matter is at zero temperature, charge neutral and in beta-equilibrium, considering that the baryon octet interacts by the exchange of scalar-isoscalar ($σ$,$\,σ^*$), vector-isoscalar ($ω$,$\,ϕ$), vector-isovector ($\varrho$) and scalar-isovector ($δ$) meson fields. Using nuclear matter properties, we constrain the parameters of the model that describe the intensity of the indirectly density dependent baryon-meson couplings to a small range of possible values. We then investigate asymmetric hyperonic matter properties. We report that the formalism developed in this work is in agreement with experimental data and also allows for the existence of massive hyperon stars (with more than $2M_{\odot}$) with small radii, compatible with astrophysical observations.

Hyperon Stars in Strong Magnetic Fields

We investigate the effects of strong magnetic fields on the properties of hyperon stars. The matter is described by a hadronic model with parametric coupling. The matter is considered to be at zero temperature, charge neutral, beta-equilibrated, containing the baryonic octet, electrons and muons. The charged particles have their orbital motions Landau-quantized in the presence of strong magnetic fields (SMF). Two parametrisations of a chemical potential dependent static magnetic field are considered, reaching $1-2 \times 10^{18}\,G$ in the center of the star. Finally, the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equations are solved to obtain the mass-radius relation and population of the stars.
