En route to a multi-model scheme for clinker comminution with chemical grinding aids

We present a multi-model simulation approach, targeted at understanding the behavior of comminution and the effect of grinding aids (GAs) in industrial cement mills. On the atomistic scale we use Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations with validated force field models to quantify elastic and structural properties, cleavage energies as well as the organic interactions with mineral surfaces. Simulations based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are used to integrate the information gained from MD simulations into the clinker particle behavior at larger scales. Computed impact energy distributions from DEM mill simulations can serve as a link between large-scale industrial and laboratory sized mills. They also provide the required input for particle impact fragmentation models. Such a multi-scale, multi-model methodology paves the way for a structured approach to the design of chemical additives aimed at improving mill performance.

On the rupture of DNA molecule

Using Langevin Dynamic simulations, we study effects of the shear force on the rupture of a double stranded DNA molecule. The model studied here contains two single diblock copolymers interacting with each other. The elastic constants of individual segments of the diblock copolymer are considered to be different. We showed that the magnitude of the rupture force depends on whether the force is applied at $3'-3'-$ends or $5'-5'-$ends. Distributions of extension in hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds along the chain show the striking differences. Motivated by recent experiments, we have also calculated the variation of rupture force for different chain lengths. Results obtained from simulations have been validated with the analytical calculation based on the ladder model of DNA.

Statistical Mechanics of DNA Rupture: Theory and Simulations

We study the effects of the shear force on the rupture mechanism on a double stranded DNA. Motivated by recent experiments, we perform the atomistic simulations with explicit solvent to obtain the distributions of extension in hydrogen and covalent bonds below the rupture force. We obtain a significant difference between the atomistic simulations and the existing results in the iterature based on the coarse-grained models (theory and simulations). We discuss the possible reasons and improve the coarse-grained model by incorporating the consequences of semi-microscopic details of the nucleotides in its description. The distributions obtained by the modified model (simulations and theoretical) are qualitatively similar to the one obtained using atomistic simulations.

Structural and Optical Studies on Manganese doped, Modified Sodium Potassium Lithium Niobate Lead-free Piezoelectric Ceramics

Structural and Optical properties of the (Na0.5 K0.5)y Li 1-y NbO3 (y = 0.934 & 0.936) ceramics have been explored in terms of the X-Ray diffraction patters, Rietveld analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Kubelka-Munk functions. Rietveld analysis of both these structures reveals them to be tetragonal with space group P4mm. It is found that increase in Li doping increases the optical band gap. Presence of additional hardening dopant MnO2 is found to have a uniform behavior for both these composition. With increasing MnO2 concentration, the band gap decreases indicative of increase in B-site cation and O-p orbitals. Different valences of the Mn ions and relative difference in the ionic radii of the Mn ions and Nb ion are most likely the reason for these optical properties.

Anisotropic Bianchi-I Cosmological Models in String Cosmology with Variable Deceleration Parameter

The present study deals with spatially homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi-I cosmological model representing massive strings. The energy-momentum tensor, as formulated by Letelier (Phys. Rev. D 28: 2414, 1983) has been used to construct massive string cosmological model for which we assume that the expansion scalar in the model is proportional to one of the components of shear tensor. The Einstein's field equations have been solved by considering time dependent deceleration parameter which renders the scale factor $a = (\sinh(αt))^{\frac{1}{n}}$, where $α$ and $n$ are constants. It has been detected that, for $n > 1$, the presented model has a transition of the universe from the early decelerated phase to the recent accelerating phase at present epoch while for $0 < n \leq 1$, this describes purely accelerating universe which is consistent with recent astrophysical observations. Moreover, some physical and geometric properties of the model along with physical acceptability of the solutions have been also discussed in detail.

Searching and fixating: scale-invariance vs. characteristic timescales in attentional processes

In an experiment involving semantic search, the visual movements of sample populations subjected to visual and aural input were tracked in a taskless paradigm. The probability distributions of saccades and fixations were obtained and analyzed. Scale-invariance was observed in the saccadic distributions, while the fixation distributions revealed the presence of a characteristic (attentional) time scale for literate subjects. A detailed analysis of our results suggests that saccadic eye motions are an example of Levy, rather than Brownian, dynamics.
