Collective Oscillations in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensed Gases in the Presence of Weak Disorder

The influence of a weak random potential on the collective modes of a trapped interacting Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature is calculated in the limit when the correlation length of the disorder is smaller than the healing length of the superfluid. The problem is solved in the Thomas-Fermi limit by generalizing the superfluid hydrodynamic equations to allow for the presence of weak disorder. We find that the disorder-induced frequency-shifts of the low-energy excitations can be of the same order of magnitude as the beyond mean-field corrections in the normal interaction recently observed experimentally.

Thermodynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate with Weak Disorder

We consider the thermodynamics of a homogeneous superfluid dilute Bose gas in the presence of weak quenched disorder. Following the zero-temperature approach of Huang and Meng, we diagonalize the Hamiltonian of a dilute Bose gas in an external random delta-correlated potential by means of a Bogoliubov transformation. We extend this approach to finite temperature by combining the Popov and the many-body T-matrix approximations. This approach permits us to include the quasi-particle interactions within this temperature range. We derive the disorder-induced shifts of the Bose-Einstein critical temperature and of the temperature for the onset of superfluidity by approaching the transition points from below, i.e., from the superfluid phase. Our results lead to a phase diagram consistent with that of the finite-temperature theory of Lopatin and Vinokur which was based on the replica method, and in which the transition points were approached from above.

Exact results for one-dimensional disordered bosons with strong repulsion

We study one-dimensional incommensurate bosons with strong repulsive interactions and weak disorder. In analogy to the clean Tonks-Girardeau gas, a Bose-Fermi mapping expresses this problem in terms of disordered free fermions. Thereby many known results apply, in particular for the density-density correlations, the distribution function of the local density of states, and the complete spectral statistics. We also analyze the bosonic momentum distribution, and comment on the experimental observability of these predictions in ultracold atomic gases.

Chaos and Quantum Chaos in Cosmological Models

Spatially homogeneous cosmological models reduce to Hamiltonian systems in a low dimensional Minkowskian space moving on the total energy shell $H=0$. Close to the initial singularity some models (those of Bianchi type VIII and IX) can be reduced further, in a certain approximation, to a non-compact triangular billiard on a 2-dimensional space of constant negative curvature with a separately conserved positive kinetic energy. This type of billiard has long been known as a prototype chaotic dynamical system. These facts are reviewed here together with some recent results on the energy level statistics of the quantized billiard and with direct explicit semi-classical solutions of the Hamiltonian cosmological model to which the billiard is an approximation. In the case of Bianchi type IX models the latter solutions correspond to the special boundary conditions of a `no-boundary state' as proposed by Hartle and Hawking and of a `wormhole' state.

The Hartle-Hawking state for the Bianchi IX model in supergravity

We solve the quantum constraints for homogeneous N=1 supergravity on 3-geometries with a Bianchi IX metric. Because these geometries admit Killing vectors with the same commutation relations as the angular momentum generators, there are two distinct definitions of homogeneity. The first of these is well-known and has been shown by D'Eath to give the wormhole state. We show that the alternative definition of homogeneity leads to the Hartle-Hawking ``no boundary" state.
