The Extended Bess Model: Bounds from Precision Electroweak Measurements

We present an effective Lagrangian parameterization describing scalar, vector, and axial-vector bound states, originating from a strong breaking of the electroweak symmetry, based on the global symmetry $SU(N)_L\otimes SU(N)_R$. In this approach vector and axial-vector bound states are gauge bosons associated to a hidden $SU(N)_L\otimes SU(N)_R$ symmetry. After the gauging of the electroweak symmetry, the corrections to the self-energies of the standard model gauge bosons are calculated and bounds on the parameter space of the model arising from precision measurements are studied. The self-energy corrections arise from spin 1 mixings, pseudogoldstones loops, pseudogoldstone-spin 1 loops, and tadpole terms. The one-loop terms tend to decrease both isospin conserving and isospin violating corrections. Careful calculation for standard $SU(8)$ QCD-scaled technicolor shows that strictly this model (which has however serious theoretical difficulties on his own) is still marginally allowed at present experimental precision.

Critical Endpoint and Inverse Magnetic Catalysis for Finite Temperature and Density Quark Matter in a Magnetic Background

In this article we study chiral symmetry breaking for quark matter in a magnetic background, $\bm B$, at finite temperature and quark chemical potential, $μ$, making use of the Ginzburg-Landau effective action formalism. As a microscopic model to compute the effective action we use the renormalized quark-meson model. Our main goal is to study the evolution of the critical endpoint, ${\cal CP}$, as a function of the magnetic field strength, and investigate on the realization of inverse magnetic catalysis at finite chemical potential. We find that the phase transition at zero chemical potential is always of the second order; for small and intermediate values of $\bm B$, ${\cal CP}$ moves towards small $μ$, while for larger $\bm B$ it moves towards moderately larger values of $μ$. Our results are in agreement with the inverse magnetic catalysis scenario at finite chemical potential and not too large values of the magnetic field, while at larger $\bm B$ direct magnetic catalysis sets in.

The fate of pion condensation in quark matter: from the chiral limit to the physical pion mass

We study aspects of the pion condensation in two-flavor neutral quark matter using the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model of QCD at finite density. We investigate the role of electric charge neutrality, and explicit symmetry breaking via quark mass, both of which control the onset of the charged pion $(π^c)$ condensation. We show that the equality between the electric chemical potential and the in-medium pion mass, $μ_{e}=M_{π^-}$, as a threshold, persists even for a composite pion system in the medium, provided the transition to the pion condensed phase is of the second order. Moreover, we find that the pion condensate in neutral quark matter is extremely fragile to the symmetry breaking effect via a current quark mass $m$, and is ruled out for $m$ larger than the order of 10 keV.

Ginzburg-Landau approach to the three flavor LOFF phase of QCD

We explore, using a Ginzburg-Landau expansion of the free energy, the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) phase of QCD with three flavors, using the NJL four-fermion coupling to mimic gluon interactions. We find that, below the point where the QCD homogeneous superconductive phases should give way to the normal phase, Cooper condensation of the pairs u-s and d-u is possible, but in the form of the inhomogeneous LOFF pairing.

Quasi-particle Specific Heats for the Crystalline Color Superconducting Phase of QCD

We calculate the specific heats of quasi-particles of two-flavor QCD in its crystalline phases for low temperature. We show that for the different crystalline structures considered here there are gapless modes contributing linearly in temperature to the specific heat. We evaluate also the phonon contributions which are cubic in temperature. These features might be relevant for compact stars with an inner shell in a color superconducting crystalline phase.

Effective Field Theory for the Crystalline Colour Superconductive Phase of QCD

We present an effective field theory for high density, low temperature QCD in the crystalline colour superconductive phase (LOFF phase). This interesting phase of QCD is characterized by a gap parameter with a crystalline pattern, breaking traslational and rotational invariance, and could have astrophysical applications. In the effective theory the fermions have a Majorana mass, which, besides colour, breaks translation and rotation symmetries. Fermions couple to the three phonons arising from the breaking of rotation and translation invariance. Integrating out the fermions leads eventually to an effective lagrangian in terms of the phonon fields only, which satisfies an anisotropic dispersion relation.

B and B_s decays into three pseudoscalar mesons and the determination of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle

We reconsider two classical proposals for the determination of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle: B^\pm => chi_{c0} π^\pm => π^+π^-π^\pm and B_s => rho^0 K_S => π^+ π^- K_S. We point out the relevance, in both cases, of non resonant amplitudes, where the π^+ π^- pair is produced by weak decay of a B^* (J^P=1^-) or B_0 (J^P=0^+) off-shell meson. In particular, for the B decay channel, the inclusion of the B_0 pole completes some previous analyses and confirms their conclusions, provided a suitable cut in the Dalitz plot is performed; for the B_s decay the inclusion of the B^*, B_0 amplitudes enhances the role of the tree diagrams as compared to penguin amplitudes, which makes the theoretical uncertainty related to the B_s => rho^0 K_S decay process less significant. While the first method is affected by theoretical uncertainties, the second one is cleaner, but its usefulness will depend on the available number of events to perform the analysis.

Measuring B -> rho pi decays and the unitarity angle alpha

The decay mode B -> rho pi is currently studied as a channel allowing, in principle, to measure without ambiguities the angle alpha of the unitarity triangle. It is also investigated by the CLEO Collaboration where a branching ratio larger than expected for the decay mode B+/- -> rho0 pi+/- has been found. We investigate the role that the B* and B(0+) resonances play in these analyses.

Non Leptonic Heavy Hadron Decays and Local Duality

We discuss local duality for weak non leptonic B and Lambda_b decays in the m_b -> infinity limit under the hypothesis of factorization and in the Shifman-Voloshin limit. We show that, under these hypotheses, local duality holds for the first two terms in the 1/m_b expansion and at the order alpha_s in the perturbative expansion. The possible relevance of these results for the operator product expansion evaluation of the b-hadron lifetimes is discussed.

Phenomenology of Heavy Meson Chiral Lagrangians

The approximate symmetries of Quantum ChromoDynamics in the infinite heavy quark ($Q=c,b$) mass limit ($m_Q \to \infty$) and in the chiral limit for the light quarks ($m_q \to 0,\;q=\,u,\,d,\,s$) can be used together to build up an effective chiral lagrangian for heavy and light mesons describing strong interactions among effective meson fields as well as their couplings to electromagnetic and weak currents, including the relevant symmetry breaking terms. The effective theory includes heavy ($Q \bar q$) mesons of both negative and positive parity, light pseudoscalars, as well as light vector mesons. We summarize the estimates for the parameters entering the effective lagrangian and discuss in particular some phenomenologically important couplings, such as $g_{B^* B π}$. The hyperfine splitting of heavy mesons is discussed in detail. The effective lagrangian allows for the possibility to describe consistently weak couplings of heavy ($B,\, D$) to light ($π,\, ρ, \, K^*,\,$ etc.) mesons. The method has however its own limitations, due to the requirement that the light meson momenta should be small, and we discuss how such limitations can be circumvented through reasonable ansatz on the form factors. Flavour conserving (e. g. $B^* \to B\, γ$) and flavour changing (e. g. $B \to K^* \, γ$) radiative decays provide another field of applications of effective lagrangians; they are discussed together with their phenomenological implications. Finally we analyze effective lagrangians describing heavy charmonium- like ($\bar Q Q$) mesons and their strong and electromagnetic interactions. The role of approximate heavy quark symmetries for this case and the phenomenological tests of these models are also discussed.

Disoriented Chiral Condensates: A Dynamical Simulation in the (2+1)-Dimensional Gross-Neveu Model

We simulate the formation and growth of disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) regions which follow the expansion of a high energy density region into the ``cold'' vacuum. The numerical study is based on the one-loop effective potential for the massive 2+1-dimensional Gross-Neveu model. We pay attention to the setting of the initial conditions and to determining which parameters are relevant for a strong amplification of the pion field. We find that the size of the ``hot'' source plays a significant role. For large enough source radii, we observe strong correlation phenomena, corresponding to the growth of large regions where the pion field oscillates along a given direction. We give our results in terms of the $θ$ angle which defines the DCC disorientation, of the other $O(4)$ angles distributions, of the local ratios $R_{a}=π_{a}^{2}/{\vecπ}^2$ $(a=1,2,3)$, and of the energies associated with the fields at representative times.

Some Results on the BESS Model at Future Colliders

We present some results on the usefulness of upgraded Tevatron, LHC proton proton collider and linear e+e- colliders in the TeV range to test the idea of a strongly interacting sector as responsible for the electroweak symmetry breaking. The calculations are performed within an effective lagrangian description, called the BESS model, which provides for a rather general frame based on the standing point of custodial symmetry and gauge invariance, without specifying any dynamical scheme.

SYMMETRIES FOR VECTOR AND AXIAL-VECTOR MESONS

We discuss the possible symmetries of the effective lagrangian describing interacting pseudoscalar-, vector-, and axial-vector mesons. Specific choices of the parameters give rise to an $[SU(2)\otimes SU(2)]^3$ symmetry. This symmetry can be obtained either {\it á la} Georgi, with all states in the spectrum remaining massless, or in a new realization, implying decoupling of the pseudoscalar bosons from degenerate vector and axial-vector mesons. This second possibility, when minimally coupled with $SU(2)\otimes U(1)$ electroweak gauge vector bosons, seems particularly appealing. All deviations in the low-energy electroweak parameters are strongly suppressed, and the vector and axial-vector states turn out to be quite narrow. A nearby strong electroweak sector would then be conceivable and in principle it could be explored with relatively low energy accelerators.

Breaking Electroweak Symmetry Strongly

The problem of electroweak symmetry breaking is reviewed with discussion of future relevant experimentation at LHC and $e^+e^-$ linear colliders. The possibility of strong electroweak symmetry breaking is examined in more detail, using the BESS (Breaking Electroweak Symmetry Strongly) model as a basis for the discussion. The formal constructions are briefly presented and the possible expectations at future colliders are summarized.

Hadronic Transitions among Quarkonium States in a Soft-Exchange-Approximation. Chiral Breaking and Spin Symmetry Breaking Processes

Although no asymptotic heavy quark spin symmetry, and even more no flavor symmetry, are expected for systems such as quarkonium, a numerical discussion shows that for some processes and in a preasymptotic region which may roughly include charmonium and bottomonium, the use of the spin-symmetry may be useful in conjunction with chiral symmetry for light hadrons (soft-exchange- approximation regime, SEA). We continue our discussion of hadronic transitions in the SEA-regime by studying in particular chiral breaking transitions such as $~^3P' \to ~^3Pπ^0$, $~^3Pη$, level splittings and transitions which break both chiral and spin symmetry, such as $ψ' \to J/ψπ^0$, $J/ψη$, and $~^1P_1 \to J/ψπ^0$.

Two Body Non Leptonic Decays of B and B_s Mesons

We perform an analysis of two-body non leptonic decays of $B$ and $B_s$ mesons in the factorization approximation. We make use of the semileptonic decay amplitudes previously calculated on the basis of an effective lagrangian satisfying chiral and heavy quark symmetries and including spin 1 resonances. Exclusive semileptonic $D$-decay data are used as experimental input. Our results compare favorably with data, whenever they are available and indicate a positive value for the ratio of non leptonic coefficients $a_2/a_1$, similarly to previous studies.
