Measurement of the generalized spin polarizabilities of the neutron in the low Q2Q^2 region

Understanding the nucleon spin structure in the regime where the strong interaction becomes truly strong poses a challenge to both experiment and theory. At energy scales below the nucleon mass of about 1 GeV, the intense interaction among the quarks and gluons inside the nucleon makes them highly correlated. Their coherent behaviour causes the emergence of effective degrees of freedom, requiring the application of non-perturbative techniques, such as chiral effective field theory. Here, we present measurements of the neutron's generalized spin-polarizabilities that quantify the neutron's spin precession under electromagnetic fields at very low energy-momentum transfer squared down to 0.035 GeV2^2. In this regime, chiral effective field theory calculations are expected to be applicable. Our data, however, show a strong discrepancy with these predictions, presenting a challenge to the current description of the neutron's spin properties.

Dispersive Corrections to the Born Approximation in Elastic Electron-Nucleus Scattering in the Intermediate Energy Regime

Measurements of elastic electron scattering data within the past decade have highlighted two-photon exchange contributions as a necessary ingredient in theoretical calculations to precisely evaluate hydrogen elastic scattering cross sections. This correction can modify the cross section at the few percent level. In contrast, dispersive effects can cause significantly larger changes from the Born approximation. The purpose of this experiment is to extract the carbon-12 elastic cross section around the first diffraction minimum, where the Born term contributions to the cross section are small to maximize the sensitivity to dispersive effects. The analysis uses the LEDEX data from the high resolution Jefferson Lab Hall A spectrometers to extract the cross sections near the first diffraction minimum of 12C at beam energies of 362 MeV and 685 MeV. The results are in very good agreement with previous world data, although with less precision. The average deviation from a static nuclear charge distribution expected from linear and quadratic fits indicate a 30.6% contribution of dispersive effects to the cross section at 1 GeV. The magnitude of the dispersive effects near the first diffraction minimum of 12C has been confirmed to be large with a strong energy dependence and could account for a large fraction of the magnitude for the observed quenching of the longitudinal nuclear response. These effects could also be important for nuclei radii extracted from parity-violating asymmetries measured near a diffraction minimum.

Measurement of the 3He Spin-Structure Functions and of Neutron (3He) Spin-Dependent Sum Rules at 0.035<Q^2<0.24 GeV^2

The spin-structure functions g1g_1 and g2g_2, and the spin-dependent partial cross-section σTTσ_\mathrm{TT} have been extracted from the polarized cross-sections differences, Δσ∥(ν,Q2)Δσ_{\parallel}\hspace{-0.06cm}\left(ν,Q^{2}\right) and Δσ⊥(ν,Q2)Δσ_{\perp}\hspace{-0.06cm}\left(ν,Q^{2}\right) measured for the 3He⃗(e⃗,e′)X\vec{^\textrm{3}\textrm{He}}(\vec{\textrm{e}},\textrm{e}')\textrm{X} reaction, in the E97-110 experiment at Jefferson Lab. Polarized electrons with energies from 1.147 to 4.404 GeV were scattered at angles of 6∘^{\circ} and 9∘^{\circ} from a longitudinally or transversely polarized 3^{3}He target. The data cover the kinematic regions of the quasi-elastic, resonance production and beyond. From the extracted spin-structure functions, the first moments Γ1‾(Q2)\overline{Γ_1}\hspace{-0.06cm}\left(Q^{2}\right), Γ2(Q2)Γ_2\hspace{-0.06cm}\left(Q^{2}\right) and ITT(Q2)I_{\mathrm{TT}}\hspace{-0.06cm}\left(Q^{2}\right) are evaluated with high precision for the neutron in the Q2Q^2 range from 0.035 to 0.24~GeV2^{2}. The comparison of the data and the chiral effective field theory predictions reveals the importance of proper treatment of the ΔΔ degree of freedom for spin observables.

A precision measurement of the pp(e,e′p e,e^\prime p\,)π0π^0 reaction at threshold

New results are reported from a measurement of π0π^0 electroproduction near threshold using the p(e,e′p)π0p(e,e^{\prime} p)π^0 reaction. The experiment was designed to determine precisely the energy dependence of s−s- and p−p-wave electromagnetic multipoles as a stringent test of the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). The data were taken with an electron beam energy of 1192 MeV using a two-spectrometer setup in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. For the first time, complete coverage of the ϕπ∗ϕ^*_π and θπ∗θ^*_π angles in the pπ0p π^0 center-of-mass was obtained for invariant energies above threshold from 0.5 MeV up to 15 MeV. The 4-momentum transfer Q2Q^2 coverage ranges from 0.05 to 0.155 (GeV/c)2^2 in fine steps. A simple phenomenological analysis of our data shows strong disagreement with p−p-wave predictions from ChPT for Q2>0.07Q^2>0.07 (GeV/c)2^2, while the s−s-wave predictions are in reasonable agreement.

Moments of the neutron g2g_2 structure function at intermediate Q2Q^2

We present new experimental results of the 3^3He spin structure function g2g_2 in the resonance region at Q2Q^2 values between 1.2 and 3.0 (GeV/c)2^2. Spin dependent moments of the neutron were then extracted. Our main result, the resonance contribution to the neutron d2d_2 matrix element, was found to be small at <Q2><Q^2>=2.4 (GeV/c)2^2 and in agreement with the Lattice QCD calculation. The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule for 3^3He and the neutron was tested with the measured data and using the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for the low xx unmeasured region. A small deviation was observed at Q2Q^2 values between 0.5 and 1.2 (GeV/c)2^2 for the neutron.

The E00-110 experiment in Jefferson Lab's Hall A: Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering off the Proton at 6 GeV

We present final results on the photon electroproduction (e⃗p→epγ\vec{e}p\rightarrow epγ) cross section in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region from Jefferson Lab experiment E00-110. Results from an analysis of a subset of these data were published before, but the analysis has been improved which is described here at length, together with details on the experimental setup. Furthermore, additional data have been analyzed resulting in photon electroproduction cross sections at new kinematic settings, for a total of 588 experimental bins. Results of the Q2Q^2- and xBx_B-dependences of both the helicity-dependent and helicity-independent cross sections are discussed. The Q2Q^2-dependence illustrates the dominance of the twist-2 handbag amplitude in the kinematics of the experiment, as previously noted. Thanks to the excellent accuracy of this high luminosity experiment, it becomes clear that the unpolarized cross section shows a significant deviation from the Bethe-Heitler process in our kinematics, compatible with a large contribution from the leading twist-2 DVCS2^2 term to the photon electroproduction cross section. The necessity to include higher-twist corrections in order to fully reproduce the shape of the data is also discussed. The DVCS cross sections in this paper represent the final set of experimental results from E00-110, superseding the previous publication.

Low Q^2 measurements of the proton form factor ratio mupGE/GMmu_p G_E / G_M

We present an updated extraction of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio, mu_p G_E/G_M, at low Q^2. The form factors are sensitive to the spatial distribution of the proton, and precise measurements can be used to constrain models of the proton. An improved selection of the elastic events and reduced background contributions yielded a small systematic reduction in the ratio mu_p G_E/G_M compared to the original analysis.

Measurements of the Electric Form Factor of the Neutron up to Q2=3.4 GeV2 using the Reaction He3(e,e'n)pp

The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from studies of the reaction He3(e,e'n)pp in quasi-elastic kinematics in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. Longitudinally polarized electrons were scattered off a polarized target in which the nuclear polarization was oriented perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons that were registered in a large-solid-angle detector. More than doubling the Q2-range over which it is known, we find GEn = 0.0225 +/- 0.0017 (stat) +/- 0.0024 (syst), 0.0200 +/- 0.0023 +/- 0.0018, and 0.0142 +/- 0.0019 +/- 0.0013 for Q2 = 1.72, 2.48, and 3.41 GeV2, respectively.

Proton Polarimeter Calibration between 82 and 217 MeV

The proton analyzing power in carbon has been measured for energies of 82 to 217 MeV and proton scattering angles of 5 to 41 degrees. The measurements were carried out using polarized protons from the elastic scattering H(pol. e, pol. p) reaction and the Focal Plane Polarimeter (FPP) in Hall A of Jefferson Lab. A new parameterization of the FPP p-C analyzing power was fit to the data, which is in good agreement with previous parameterizations and provides an extension to lower energies and larger angles. The main conclusions are that all polarimeters to date give consistent measurements of the carbon analyzing power, independently of the details of their construction and that measuring on a larger angular range significantly improves the polarimeter figure of merit at low energies.
