The SM and NLO Multileg and SM MC Working Groups: Summary Report

The 2011 Les Houches workshop was the first to confront LHC data. In the two years since the previous workshop there have been significant advances in both soft and hard QCD, particularly in the areas of multi-leg NLO calculations, the inclusion of those NLO calculations into parton shower Monte Carlos, and the tuning of the non-perturbative parameters of those Monte Carlos. These proceedings describe the theoretical advances that have taken place, the impact of the early LHC data, and the areas for future development.

Progress in the Neural Network Determination of Polarized Parton Distributions

We review recent progress towards a determination of a set of polarized parton distributions from a global set of deep-inelastic scattering data based on the NNPDF methodology, in analogy with the unpolarized case. This method is designed to provide a faithful and statistically sound representation of parton distributions and their uncertainties. We show how the FastKernel method provides a fast and accurate method for solving the polarized DGLAP equations. We discuss the polarized PDF parametrizations and the physical constraints which can be imposed. Preliminary results suggest that the uncertainty on polarized PDFs, most notably the gluon, has been underestimated in previous studies.

The impact of heavy quark mass effects in the NNPDF global analysis

We discuss the implementation of the FONLL general-mass scheme for heavy quarks in deep-inelastic scattering in the FastKernel framework, used in the NNPDF series of global PDF analysis. We present the general features of FONLL and benchmark the accuracy of its implementation in FastKernel comparing with the Les Houches heavy quark benchmark tables. We then show preliminary results of the NNPDF2.1 analysis, in which heavy quark mass effects are included following the FONLL-A GM scheme.

Heavy Quark Production at High Energy

We report on QCD radiative corrections to heavy quark production valid at high energy. The formulae presented will allow a matched calculation of the total cross section which is correct at $O(\as^3)$ and includes resummation of all terms of order $\as^3 [\as \ln (s/m^2)]^n$. We also include asymptotic estimates of the effect of the high energy resummation. A complete description of the calculation of the heavy quark impact factor is included in an appendix.

Summation of Leading Logarithms at Small x

We show how perturbation theory may be reorganized to give splitting functions which include order by order convergent sums of all leading logarithms of $x$. This gives a leading twist evolution equation for parton distributions which sums all leading logarithms of $x$ and $Q^2$, allowing stable perturbative evolution down to arbitrarily small values of $x$. Perturbative evolution then generates the double scaling rise of $F_2$ observed at HERA, while in the formal limit $x\to 0$ at fixed $Q^2$ the Lipatov $x^{-λ}$ behaviour is eventually reproduced. We are thus able to explain why leading order perturbation theory works so well in the HERA region.

Anomalous Evolution of Nonsinglet Nucleon Structure Functions

We calculate the scale dependence of nonsinglet nucleon structure functions. Due to anomalous axial symmetry breaking a large flavour asymmetry of the quark--antiquark sea is generated nonperturbatively. This produces a strong scale dependence of the nonsinglet structure function in an intermediate range of $Q^2$. Evolving nonperturbatively a pure valence distribution from an infrared scale we can thus compute $F_2^p-F_2^n$ as measured by the NMC, and give detailed predictions for its $Q^2$ dependence at fixed $x$. We also compare our results with Drell--Yan data.

Double Asymptotic Scaling at HERA

Perturbative QCD predicts that at sufficiently large $Q^2$ and small $x$ nucleon structure functions should exhibit scaling in the two variables $\sqrt{\ln\smallfrac{1}{x}\ln\ln Q^2}$ and $\sqrt{\ln\smallfrac{1}{x}\big/\ln\ln Q^2}$, provided only that the small-$x$ behaviour of the input to the perturbative QCD evolution is sufficiently soft. We derive these asymptotic results by writing the gluonic Altarelli--Parisi equation at small $x$ as a two--dimensional wave equation, which propagates the gluon distribution from its boundaries into the asymptotic region. We then show that the existing experimental data on $F_2^p(x,Q^2)$ from HERA provide a remarkable confirmation of both of these scaling predictions. The so--called `hard' pomeron, which does not scale, may thus be excluded by more than three standard deviations, at least in the presently accessible kinematical regime. We propose that existing and future data from HERA should be binned in the two scaling variables, in order to search for scaling violations.

Infrared and Ultraviolet Behaviour of Effective Scalar Field Theory

We consider the infrared and ultraviolet behaviour of the effective quantum field theory of a single $Z_2$ symmetric scalar field. In a previous paper we proved to all orders in perturbation theory the renormalizability of massive effective scalar field theory using Wilson's exact renormalization group equation. Here we show that away from exceptional momenta the massless theory is similarly renormalizable, and we prove detailed bounds on Green's functions as arbitrary combinations of exceptional Euclidean momenta are approached. As a corollary we also prove Weinberg's Theorem for the massive effective theory, in the form of bounds on Green's functions at Euclidean momenta much greater than the particle mass but below the naturalness scale of the theory.

The Decoupling Theorem in Effective Scalar Field Theory

We consider decoupling in the context of an effective quantum field theory of two scalar fields with well separated mass scales and a $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry. We first prove, using Wilson's exact renormalization group equation, that the theory is renormalizable, in the same way that we showed in a previous paper that theories with a single mass scale were renormalizable. We then state and prove a decoupling theorem: at scales below the mass of the heavy particle the full theory may be approximated arbitrarily closely by an effective theory of the light particle alone, with naturalness scale the heavy particle mass. We also compare our formulation of effective field theory with the more conventional local formulation.
