Personalized Early Stage Alzheimer's Disease Detection: A Case Study of President Reagan's Speeches

Alzheimer`s disease (AD)-related global healthcare cost is estimated to be $1 trillion by 2050. Currently, there is no cure for this disease; however, clinical studies show that early diagnosis and intervention helps to extend the quality of life and inform technologies for personalized mental healthcare. Clinical research indicates that the onset and progression of Alzheimer`s disease lead to dementia and other mental health issues. As a result, the language capabilities of patient start to decline. In this paper, we show that machine learning-based unsupervised clustering of and anomaly detection with linguistic biomarkers are promising approaches for intuitive visualization and personalized early stage detection of Alzheimer`s disease. We demonstrate this approach on 10 year`s (1980 to 1989) of President Ronald Reagan`s speech data set. Key linguistic biomarkers that indicate early-stage AD are identified. Experimental results show that Reagan had early onset of Alzheimer`s sometime between 1983 and 1987. This finding is corroborated by prior work that analyzed his interviews using a statistical technique. The proposed technique also identifies the exact speeches that reflect linguistic biomarkers for early stage AD.

Complexity Analysis of CSMA Scheduling via Dependencies Matrix

The complexity of a CSMA algorithm has been translated to the norm properties of a dependencies matrix. The maximum throughput optimization is reformulated by including the dependencies matrix in the formulations. It has been shown that for the interference graphs $\mathcal{G}$ that have minimum vertex cover size $\mathcal{C}(\mathcal{G})=\log n$ where $n$ is the number of the links, the optimal strategy of the links is to transmit with the probability 1, i.e a service-rate agnostic approach. Several numerical analyses have been conducted in order to illustrate the effect of the interference graph, transmission strategy and arrival rate on the dependencies matrix.

Joint Spectrum Sensing and Resource Allocation for OFDM-based Transmission with a Cognitive Relay

In this paper, we investigate the joint spectrum sensing and resource allocation problem to maximize throughput capacity of an OFDM-based cognitive radio link with a cognitive relay. By applying a cognitive relay that uses decode and forward (D&F), we achieve more reliable communications, generating less interference (by needing less transmit power) and more diversity gain. In order to account for imperfections in spectrum sensing, the proposed schemes jointly modify energy detector thresholds and allocates transmit powers to all cognitive radio (CR) subcarriers, while simultaneously assigning subcarrier pairs for secondary users (SU) and the cognitive relay. This problem is cast as a constrained optimization problem with constraints on (1) interference introduced by the SU and the cognitive relay to the PUs; (2) miss-detection and false alarm probabilities and (3) subcarrier pairing for transmission on the SU transmitter and the cognitive relay and (4) minimum Quality of Service (QoS) for each CR subcarrier. We propose one optimal and two sub-optimal schemes all of which are compared to other schemes in the literature. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes achieve significantly higher throughput than other schemes in the literature for different relay situations.
