First-order formalism and thick branes in mimetic gravity

In this paper, we investigate thick branes generated by a scalar field in mimetic gravity theory. By introducing two auxiliary super-potentials, we transform the second-order field equations of the system into a set of first-order equations. With this first-order formalism, several types of analytical thick brane solutions are obtained. Then, tensor and scalar perturbations are analysed. We find that both kinds of perturbations are stable. The effective potentials for the tensor and scalar perturbations are dual to each other. The tensor zero mode can be localized on the brane while the scalar zero mode cannot. Thus, the four-dimensional Newtonian potential can be recovered on the brane.

Generalized geometrical coupling for vector field localization on thick brane in asymptotic Anti-de Sitter spacetime

It is known that a five-dimensional free vector field $A_{M}$ cannot be localized on Randall-Sundrum (RS)-like thick branes, namely, the thick branes embedded in asymptotic Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. In order to localize a vector field on the RS-like thick brane, an extra coupling term should be introduced. In this paper, we generalize the geometrical coupling mechanism by adding two mass terms ($αRg^{MN}A_{M}A_{N}+βR^{MN}A_{M}A_{N}$) into the action. We decompose the fundamental vector field $A_{M}$ into three parts: transverse vector part $\hat{A}_μ$, scalar parts $ϕ$ and $A_{5}$. Then, we find that the transverse vector part $\hat{A}_μ$ decouples from the scalar parts. In order to eliminate the tachyonic modes of $\hat{A}_μ$, the two coupling parameters $α$ and $β$ should satisfy a relation. Combining the restricted condition, we can get a combination parameter as $γ=\frac{3}{2}\pm\sqrt{1+12α}$. Only if $γ>1/2$, the zero mode of $\hat{A}_μ$ can be localized on the RS-like thick brane. We also investigate the resonant character of the vector part $\hat{A}_μ$ for the general RS-like thick brane with the warp factor $A(z)=-\ln(1+k^2z^2)/2$ by choosing the relative probability method. The result shows that, only for $γ>3$, the massive resonant Kaluza-Klein modes can exist. The number of resonant Kaluza-Klein states increases with the combination parameter $γ$, and the lifetime of the first resonant state can be long enough as the age of our universe. This indicates that the vector resonances might be considered as one of the candidates of dark matter.

Fermion Localization and Degenerate Resonances on Brane Array

In this work, we consider the multi-wall braneworld arisen from multi-scalar fields, and investigate the localization and resonances of spin-1/2 fermion on the multi-walls. We build two analytic multi-wall solutions with a polynomial superpotential and a modified sine-Gordon superpotential respectively. The massless fermion is the only bound state and localized between the two outermost sub-branes. The factors affecting the number of massive resonant fermions are analyzed. What interesting is that all the fermion resonant states are non-degenerate for the cases of single- and two-walls, however, doubly-degenerate fermion resonant states emerge for the cases of three- and four-walls. This novel phenomenon could be potentially interesting in phenomenology.

Localization and mass spectrum of $q-$form fields on branes

In this paper, we investigate localization of a bulk massless q-form field on codimension-one brane by using a new Kaluza-Klein (KK) decomposition, for which there are two types of KK modes for the bulk q-form field, the q-form and (q-1)-form modes. The first modes may be massive or massless while the second ones are all masselss. These two types fo KK modes satisfy twy Schrodinger-like equations. For a five-dimensional brane model with a finite dimension, the spectrum of a bulk 3-form field on the brane consists of some massive bound 3-form KK modes as well as some massless bound 2-form ones with different configuration along the extra dimension. These 2-form modes are different form those obtained from a bulk 2-form field. For a five-dimensional degenerated Bloch brane model with an infinite extra dimension, some massive 3-form resonant KK modes and corresponding massless 2-form resonant ones are obtained for a bulk 3-form field.

Localization and mass spectra of various matter fields on scalar-tensor brane

Recently, a new scalar-tensor braneworld model was presented in [Phys. Rev. \textbf{D 86} (2012) 127502]. It not only solves the gauge hierarchy problem but also reproduces a correct Friedmann-like equation on the brane. In this new model, there are two different brane solutions, for which the mass spectra of gravity on the brane are the same. In this paper, we investigate localization and mass spectra of various bulk matter fields (i.e., scalar, vector, Kalb-Ramond, and fermion fields) on the brane. It is shown that the zero modes of all the matter fields can be localized on the positive tension brane under some conditions, and the mass spectra of each kind of bulk matter field for the two brane solutions are different, which implies that the two brane solutions are not physically equivalent.

Localization and quasilocalization of spin-$1/2$ fermion field on two-field thick braneworld

Localization of a spin-$1/2$ fermion on the braneworld is an important and interesting problem. It is well known that a five-dimensional free massless fermion $Ψ$ minimally coupled to gravity cannot be localized on the Randall-Sundrum braneworld. In order to trap such a fermion, the coupling between the fermion and bulk scalar fields should be introduced. In this paper, localization and quasilocalization of a bulk fermion on the thick braneworld generated by two scalar fields (a kink scalar $ϕ$ and a dilaton scalar $π$) are investigated. Two types of couplings between the fermion and two scalars are considered. One coupling is the usual Yukawa coupling $-η\barΨϕΨ$ between the fermion and kink scalar, another one is $λ\barΨΓ^{M}\partial_{M}πγ^{5}Ψ$ between the fermion and dilaton scalar. The left-chiral fermion zero mode can be localized on the brane, and both the left- and right-chiral fermion massive Kaluza-Klein modes may be localized or quasilocalized. Hence the four-dimensional massless left-chiral fermion and massive Dirac fermions, whose lifetime is infinite or finite, can be obtained on the brane.

Warped Brane worlds in Critical Gravity

We investigate the brane models in arbitrary dimensional critical gravity presented in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 181302 (2011)]. For the model of the thin branes with codimension one, the Gibbons-Hawking surface term and the junction conditions are derived, with which the analytical solutions for the flat, AdS, and dS branes are obtained at the critical point of the critical gravity. It is found that all these branes are embedded in an AdS$_{n}$ spacetime, but, in general, the effective cosmological constant $Λ$ of the AdS$_{n}$ spacetime is not equal to the naked one $Λ_0$ in the critical gravity, which can be positive, zero, and negative. Another interesting result is that the brane tension can also be positive, zero, or negative, depending on the symmetry of the thin brane and the values of the parameters of the theory, which is very different from the case in general relativity. It is shown that the mass hierarchy problem can be solved in the braneworld model in the higher-derivative critical gravity. We also study the thick brane model and find analytical and numerical solutions of the flat, AdS, and dS branes. It is find that some branes will have inner structure when some parameters of the theory are larger than their critical values, which may result in resonant KK modes for some bulk matter fields. The flat branes with positive energy density and AdS branes with negative energy density are embedded in an $n$-dimensional AdS spacetime, while the dS branes with positive energy density are embedded in an $n$-dimensional Minkowski one.

Resonance Mass Spectra of Gravity and Fermion on Bloch Branes

In this paper, by presenting the potentials of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes in the corresponding Schrödinger equations, we investigate the localization and resonances of gravity and fermion on the symmetric and asymmetric Bloch {branes}. We find that the localization properties of zero modes for gravity and fermion in the symmetric brane case are the same, whereas, for the asymmetric brane case, the fermion zero mode is localized on one of the sub-branes, while the gravity zero mode is localized on another sub-brane. The spectra of the gravity and the left- or right-handed fermion are composed of a bound zero mode and a series of gapless continuous massive KK modes. Among the continuous massive KK modes, we obtain some discrete gravity and fermion resonant (quasilocalized) KK states on the brane, which have a finite probability of escaping into the bulk. The KK states with lower resonant masses have a longer lifetime on the brane. And the number of the resonant KK states increases linearly with the width of the brane and the scalar-fermion coupling constant, {but it decreases with the asymmetric factor $β$}. The structure of the resonance spectrum is investigated in detail.
