Convergence rates of a dual gradient method for constrained linear ill-posed problems

In this paper we consider a dual gradient method for solving linear ill-posed problems $Ax = y$, where $A : X \to Y$ is a bounded linear operator from a Banach space $X$ to a Hilbert space $Y$. A strongly convex penalty function is used in the method to select a solution with desired feature. Under variational source conditions on the sought solution, convergence rates are derived when the method is terminated by either an {\it a priori} stopping rule or the discrepancy principle. We also consider an acceleration of the method as well as its various applications.

Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers for Linear Inverse Problems

In this paper we propose an iterative method using alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) strategy to solve linear inverse problems in Hilbert spaces with general convex penalty term. When the data is given exactly, we give a convergence analysis of our ADMM algorithm without assuming the existence of Lagrange multiplier. In case the data contains noise, we show that our method is a regularization method as long as it is terminated by a suitable stopping rule. Various numerical simulations are performed to test the efficiency of the method.

Hanke-Raus heuristic rule for variational regularization in Banach spaces

We generalize the heuristic parameter choice rule of Hanke-Raus for quadratic regularization to general variational regularization for solving linear as well as nonlinear ill-posed inverse problems in Banach spaces. Under source conditions formulated as variational inequalities, we obtain a posteriori error estimates in term of Bregman distance. By imposing certain conditions on the random noise, we establish four convergence results; one relies on the source conditions and the other three do not depend on any source conditions. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the performance.

Landweber-Kaczmarz method in Banach spaces with inexact inner solvers

In recent years Landweber(-Kaczmarz) method has been proposed for solving nonlinear ill-posed inverse problems in Banach spaces using general convex penalty functions. The implementation of this method involves solving a (nonsmooth) convex minimization problem at each iteration step and the existing theory requires its exact resolution which in general is impossible in practical applications. In this paper we propose a version of Landweber-Kaczmarz method in Banach spaces in which the minimization problem involved in each iteration step is solved inexactly. Based on the $\varepsilon$-subdifferential calculus we give a convergence analysis of our method. Furthermore, using Nesterov's strategy, we propose a possible accelerated version of Landweber-Kaczmarz method. Numerical results on computed tomography and parameter identification in partial differential equations are provided to support our theoretical results and to demonstrate our accelerated method.

A fast nonstationary iterative method with convex penalty for inverse problems in Hilbert spaces

In this paper we consider the computation of approximate solutions for inverse problems in Hilbert spaces. In order to capture the special feature of solutions, non-smooth convex functions are introduced as penalty terms. By exploiting the Hilbert space structure of the underlying problems, we propose a fast iterative regularization method which reduces to the classical nonstationary iterated Tikhonov regularization when the penalty term is chosen to be the square of norm. Each iteration of the method consists of two steps: the first step involves only the operator from the problem while the second step involves only the penalty term. This splitting character has the advantage of making the computation efficient. In case the data is corrupted by noise, a stopping rule is proposed to terminate the method and the corresponding regularization property is established. Finally, we test the performance of the method by reporting various numerical simulations, including the image deblurring, the determination of source term in Poisson equation, and the de-autoconvolution problem.

Nonstationary iterated Tikhonov regularization in Banach spaces with uniformly convex penalty terms

We consider the nonstationary iterated Tikhonov regularization in Banach spaces which defines the iterates via minimization problems with uniformly convex penalty term. The penalty term is allowed to be non-smooth to include $L^1$ and total variation (TV) like penalty functionals, which are significant in reconstructing special features of solutions such as sparsity and discontinuities in practical applications. We present the detailed convergence analysis and obtain the regularization property when the method is terminated by the discrepancy principle. In particular we establish the strong convergence and the convergence in Bregman distance which sharply contrast with the known results that only provide weak convergence for a subsequence of the iterative solutions. Some numerical experiments on linear integral equations of first kind and parameter identification in differential equations are reported.

Landweber iteration of Kaczmarz type with general non-smooth convex penalty functionals

The determination of solutions of many inverse problems usually requires a set of measurements which leads to solving systems of ill-posed equations. In this paper we propose the Landweber iteration of Kaczmarz type with general uniformly convex penalty functional. The method is formulated by using tools from convex analysis. The penalty term is allowed to be non-smooth to include the $L^1$ and total variation (TV) like penalty functionals, which are significant in reconstructing special features of solutions such as sparsity and piecewise constancy in practical applications. Under reasonable conditions, we establish the convergence of the method. Finally we present numerical simulations on tomography problems and parameter identification in partial differential equations to indicate the performance.

On the iteratively regularized Gauss--Newton method in Banach spaces with applications to parameter identification problems

In this paper we propose an extension of the iteratively regularized Gauss--Newton method to the Banach space setting by defining the iterates via convex optimization problems. We consider some a posteriori stopping rules to terminate the iteration and present the detailed convergence analysis. The remarkable point is that in each convex optimization problem we allow non-smooth penalty terms including $L^1$ and total variation (TV) like penalty functionals. This enables us to reconstruct special features of solutions such as sparsity and discontinuities in practical applications. Some numerical experiments on parameter identification in partial differential equations are reported to test the performance of our method.

Oracle inequality for a statistical Raus-Gfrerer type rule

The authors study statistical linear inverse problems in Hilbert spaces. Approximate solutions are sought within a class of linear one-parameter regularization schemes, and the parameter choice is crucial to control the root mean squared error. Here a variant of the Raus{Gfrerer rule is analyzed, and it is shown that this parameter choice gives rise to error bounds in terms of oracle inequalities, which in turn provide order optimal error bounds (up to logarithmic factors). These bounds can only be established for solutions which obey a certain self-similarity structure. The proof of the main result relies on some auxiliary error analysis for linear inverse problems under general noise assumptions, and this may be interesting in its own.

On the order optimality of the regularization via inexact Newton iterations

Inexact Newton regularization methods have been proposed by Hanke and Rieder for solving nonlinear ill-posed inverse problems. Every such a method consists of two components: an outer Newton iteration and an inner scheme providing increments by regularizing local linearized equations. The method is terminated by a discrepancy principle. In this paper we consider the inexact Newton regularization methods with the inner scheme defined by Landweber iteration, the implicit iteration, the asymptotic regularization and Tikhonov regularization. Under certain conditions we obtain the order optimal convergence rate result which improves the suboptimal one of Rieder. We in fact obtain a more general order optimality result by considering these inexact Newton methods in Hilbert scales.

A general convergence analysis on inexact Newton method for nonlinear inverse problems

We consider the inexact Newton methods $$ x_{n+1}^\d=x_n^\d-g_{\a_n}(F'(x_n^\d)^* F'(x_n^\d)) F'(x_n^\d)^* (F(x_n^\d)-y^\d) $$ for solving nonlinear ill-posed inverse problems $F(x)=y$ using the only available noise data $y^\d$ satisfying $\|y^\d-y\|\le \d$ with a given small noise level $\d>0$. We terminate the iteration by the discrepancy principle $$ \|F(x_{n_\d}^\d)-y^\d\|\le τ\d<\|F(x_n^\d)-y^\d\|, \qquad 0\le n<n_\d $$ with a given number $τ>1$. Under certain conditions on $\{\a_n\}$ and $F$, we prove for a large class of spectral filter functions $\{g_\a\}$ the convergence of $x_{n_\d}^\d$ to a true solution as $\d\rightarrow 0$. Moreover, we derive the order optimal rates of convergence when certain Hölder source conditions hold. Numerical examples are given to test the theoretical results.

Implicit iteration methods in Hilbert scales under general smoothness conditions

For solving linear ill-posed problems regularization methods are required when the right hand side is with some noise. In the present paper regularized solutions are obtained by implicit iteration methods in Hilbert scales. % By exploiting operator monotonicity of certain functions and interpolation techniques in variable Hilbert scales, we study these methods under general smoothness conditions. Order optimal error bounds are given in case the regularization parameter is chosen either {\it a priori} or {\it a posteriori} by the discrepancy principle. For realizing the discrepancy principle, some fast algorithm is proposed which is based on Newton's method applied to some properly transformed equations.
