Global Hilbert expansion for the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system

Consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system describing the dynamics of an electron gas in the presence of a fixed ion background. Thanks to recent works \cite{Germain-Masmoudi-ASENS-2014, Guo-Ionescu-Pausader-JMP-2014} and \cite{Deng-Ionescu-Pausader-ARMA-2017}, we establish the global-in-time validity of its Hilbert expansion and derive the limiting relativistic Euler-Maxwell system as the mean free path goes to zero. Our method is based on the $L^2-L^{\infty}$ framework and the Glassey-Strauss Representation of the electromagnetic field, with auxiliary $H^1$ estimate and $W^{1,\infty}$ estimates to control the characteristic curves and corresponding $L^{\infty}$ norm.

Hilbert Expansion for the Relativistic Landau Equation

In this paper, we study the local-in-time validity of the Hilbert expansion for the relativistic Landau equation. We justify that solutions of the relativistic Landau equation converge to small classical solutions of the limiting relativistic Euler equations as the Knudsen number shrinks to zero in a weighted Sobolev space. The key difficulty comes from the temporal and spatial derivatives of the local Maxwellian, which produce momentum growth terms and are uncontrollable by the standard $L^2$-based energy and dissipation. We introduce novel time-dependent weight functions to generate additional dissipation terms to suppress the large momentum. The argument relies on a hierarchy of energy-dissipation structures with or without weights. As far as the authors are aware of, this is the first result of the Hilbert expansion for the Landau-type equation.

The Riemann problem of relativistic Euler system with Synge energy

In this paper, we study the Riemann problem of relativistic Euler system for rarefied monatomic and diatomic gases when the constitutive equation for the energy is the Synge equation that is the only one compatible with the relativistic kinetic theory. The Synge equation is involved with modified Bessel functions of the second kind and this makes the relativistic Euler system quite complex. Based on delicate estimates of the modified Bessel functions of the second kind, we provide a detailed investigation of basic hyperbolic properties and the structure of elementary waves, especially for the structure of shock waves and in this way, the mathematical theory of the Riemann problem for these relativistic Euler system, which is analogous to the corresponding theory of the classical ones, is rigorously provided.

The Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system for the whole range of cutoff soft potentials

The dynamics of dilute electrons can be modeled by the fundamental one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system which describes mutual interactions of the electrons through collisions in the self-consistent electrostatic field. For cutoff intermolecular interactions, although there are some progress on the construction of global smooth solutions to its Cauchy problem near Maxwellians recently, the problem for the case of very soft potentials remains unsolved. By introducing a new time-velocity weighted energy method and based on some new optimal temporal decay estimates on the solution itself and some of its derivatives with respect to both the spatial and the velocity variables, it is shown in this manuscript that the Cauchy problem of the one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system for all cutoff soft potentials does exist a unique global smooth solution for general initial perturbation which is unnecessary to satisfy the neutral condition imposed in [13] for the case of cutoff moderately soft potentials but is assumed to be small in certain weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach applies also to the case of cutoff hard potentials and thus provides a satisfactory global well-posedness theory to the one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system near Maxwellians for the whole range of cutoff intermolecular interactions in the perturbative framework.
