A luminous hot accretion flow in the low-luminosity active galactic nucleus NGC 7213

The active galactic nucleus (AGN) NGC 7213 shows a complex correlation between the monochromatic radio luminosity LRL_R and the 2--10 keV X-ray luminosity LXL_X, i.e. the correlation is unusually weak with p∼0p\sim 0 (in the form LR∝LXpL_R\propto L_X^p) when LXL_X is below a critical luminosity, and steep with p>1p>1 when LXL_X is above that luminosity. Such a hybrid correlation in individual AGNs is unexpected as it deviates from the Fundamental Plane of AGN activity. Interestingly, a similar correlation pattern is observed in the black hole X-ray binary H1743--322, where it has been modelled by switching between different modes of accretion. We propose that the flat LRL_R--LXL_X correlation of NGC 7213 is due to the presence of a luminous hot accretion flow, an accretion model whose radiative efficiency is sensitive to the accretion rate. Given the low luminosity of the source, LX∼10−4L_X\sim 10^{-4} of the Eddington luminosity, the viscosity parameter is determined to be small, α≈0.01α\approx 0.01. We also modelled the broad-band spectrum from radio to γγ-rays, the time lag between the radio and X-ray light curves, and the implied size and the Lorentz factor of the radio jet. We predict that NGC 7213 will enter into a two-phase accretion regime when LX>1.5×1042 erg s−1L_X > 1.5 \times 10^{42}\, {\rm erg\,s^{-1}}. When this happens, we predict a softening of the X-ray spectrum with the increasing flux and a steep radio/X-ray correlation.

Jet-dominated quiescent state in black hole X-ray binaries: the cases of A0620--00 and XTE J1118+480

The radiative mechanism of the black hole X-ray transients (BHXTs) in their quiescent states (defined as the 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity ≤1034 erg s−1\le 10^{34}{\rm \,erg\,s^{-1}}) remains unclear. In this work, we investigate the quasi-simultaneous quiescent state spectrum (including radio, infrared, optical, ultraviolet and X-ray) of two BHXTs, A0620--00 and XTE J1118+480. We find that, these two sources can be well described by a coupled accretion -- jet model. More specifically, most of the emission (radio up-to infrared, and the X-ray waveband) comes from the collimated relativistic jet. Emission from hot accretion flow is totally insignificant, and it can only be observed in mid-infrared (the synchrotron peak). Emission from the outer cold disc is only evident in UV band. These results are consistent with our previous investigation on the quiescent state of V404 Cyg, and confirm that the quiescent state is jet-dominated.

Correlation between the photon index and X-ray luminosity of black hole X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei: observations and interpretation

We investigate the observed correlation between the 2--10 keV X-ray luminosity (in unit of the Eddington luminosity; lX≡LX/LEddl_X \equiv L_X/L_{Edd}) and the photon index (ΓΓ) of the X-ray spectrum for both black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We construct a large sample, with 10−9<lX<10−110^{-9} < l_X < 10^{-1}. We find that ΓΓ is positively and negatively correlated with lXl_X when lX>10−3l_X > 10^{-3} and 10−6.5<lX<10−310^{-6.5} < l_X < 10^{-3} respectively, while ΓΓ is nearly a constant when lX<10−6.5l_X < 10^{-6.5}. We explain the above correlation in the framework of a coupled hot accretion flow -- jet model. The radio emission always come from the jet while the X-ray emission comes from the accretion flow and jet when lXl_X is above and below 10−6.510^{-6.5}, respectively. More specifically, we assume that with the increase of mass accretion rate, the hot accretion flow develops into a clumpy and further a disc -- corona two-phase structure because of thermal instability. We argue that such kind of two-phase accretion flow can explain the observed positive correlation.

Jet-dominated quiescent states in black hole X-ray binaries: the case of V404 Cyg

The dynamical and radiative properties of the quiescent state (X-ray luminosity <1034 ergs−1cm−2<10^{34}\ {\rm erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}}) of black hole X-ray transients (BHXTs) remains unclear, mainly because of low-luminosity and poor data quantity. We demonstrate that, the simultaneous multi-wavelength (including radio, optical, ultraviolet and X-ray bands) spectrum of V404 Cyg in its bright quiescent state can be well described by the radiation from the companion star and more importantly, the compact jet. Neither the outer thin disc nor the inner hot accretion flow is important in the total spectrum. Together with several additional recent findings, i.e. the power-law X-ray spectrum and the constant X-ray spectral shape (or constant photon index) in contrast to the dramatic change in the X-ray luminosity, we argue the quiescent state spectrum of BHXTs is actually jet-dominated. Observational features consistent with this jet model are also discussed as supporting evidences.
