Radio pulsations from a neutron star within the gamma-ray binary LS I +61$^{\circ}$ 303

LS I +61$^{\circ}$ 303 is one of the rare gamma-ray binaries, emitting most of their luminosity in photons with energies beyond 100 MeV. The $\sim$26.5 d orbital period is clearly detected at many wavelengths. Additional aspects of its multi-frequency behavior make it the most interesting example of the class. The morphology of high-resolution radio images changes with orbital phase displaying a cometary tail pointing away from the high-mass star. LS I +61$^{\circ}$ 303 also shows superorbital variability. A couple of energetic ($\sim 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$), short, magnetar-like bursts have been plausibly ascribed to it. LS I +61$^{\circ}$ 303's phenomenology has been put under theoretical scrutiny for decades, but the lack of certainty regarding the nature of the compact object in the binary has prevented advancing our understanding of the source. Here, using observations done with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we report on the existence of transient radio pulsations from the direction of LS I +61$^{\circ}$ 303. We find a period $P=269.15508 \pm 0.00016$ ms at a significance of $> 20σ$. This is the first evidence for pulsations from this source at any frequency, and strongly argues for the existence of a rotating neutron star in LS I +61$^{\circ}$ 303.

The X-ray view of black-hole candidate Swift J1842.5-1124 during its 2008 outburst

The spectral and temporal evolution during X-ray outbursts give important clues on the accretion process and radiation mechanism in black-hole X-ray binaries (BH XRBs). A set of Swift and RXTE observations were executed to monitor the 2008 outburst of the black-hole candidate Swift J1842.5-1124. We investigate these data to explore the accretion physics in BH XRBs. We carry out a comprehensive spectral and timing analysis on all the available pointing observations, including fitting both X-ray spectra and power density spectra, measuring the optical and near-ultraviolet flux density. We also search for correlations among the spectral and timing parameters. The observed properties of Swift J1842.5-1124 are similar to other BH XRBs in many respects, for example the hardness-intensity diagram and hardness-rms diagram. The type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were observed as the source started to transit from the low-hard state to the high-soft state. The frequency of QPOs correlate with intensity and the hard component index, and anti-correlate with the hardness and the total fractional rms. These relations are consistent with the Lense-Thirring precession model. The estimated U-band flux changed with the X-ray flux, while the flux density at the V band remained 0.26 mJy. These results imply that the X-ray reprocessing or the tail of thermal emission from the outer disk contributes a significant fraction of the U-band radiation; alternatively, the companion star or the jet dominates the flux at longer wavelengths.

Multicolor Photometry of the Merging Galaxy Cluster A2319: Dynamics and Star Formation Properties

Asymmetric X-ray emission and powerful cluster-scale radio halo indicate that A2319 is a merging cluster of galaxies. This paper presents our multicolor photometry for A2319 with 15 optical intermediate filters in the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) system. There are 142 galaxies with known spectroscopic redshifts within the viewing field, including 128 member galaxies (called sample I).A large velocity dispersion in the rest frame suggests a merger dynamics in A2319. The contour map of projected density and localized velocity structure confirm the so-called A2319B substructure, at ~ 10' NW to the main concentration A2319A. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of more than 30,000 sources are obtained in our BATC photometry down to V ~ 20 mag. With color-color diagrams and photometric redshift technique, 233 galaxies brighter than h=19.0 are newly selected as member candidates. The early-type galaxies are found to follow a tight color-magnitude correlation. Based on sample I and the enlarged sample of member galaxies (called sample II), subcluster A2319B is confirmed. A strong environmental effect on star formation histories is found in the manner that galaxies in the sparse regions have various star formation histories, while galaxies in the dense regions are found to have shorter SFR time scales, older stellar ages, and higher ISM metallicities. For the merging cluster A2319, local surface density is a better environmental indicator rather than the clustercentric distance. Compared with the well-relaxed cluster A2589, a higher fraction of star-forming galaxies is found in A2319, indicating that the galaxy-scale turbulence stimulated by the subcluster merger might have played a role in triggering the star formation activity.

Star formation properties of galaxy cluster A1767

Abell 1767 is a dynamically relaxed, cD cluster of galaxies with a redshift of 0.0703. Among 250 spectroscopically confirmed member galaxies within a projected radius of 2.5r_{200}, 243 galaxies (~ 97%) are spectroscopically covered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Based on this homogeneous spectral sample, the stellar evolutionary synthesis code, STARLIGHT, is applied to investigate the stellar populations and star formation histories (SFHs) of cluster galaxies. The star formation properties of galaxies, such as mean stellar ages, metallicities, stellar masses, and star formation rates (SFRs), are presented as the functions of local galaxy density. Strong environmental effect is found in the manner that massive galaxies in the high-density core region of cluster tend to have higher metallicities, longer mean stellar ages, and lower specific star formation rates (SSFRs), and their recent star formation activities have been remarkably suppressed. In addition, the correlations of the metallicity and SSFR with stellar mass are confirmed.

Multicolor Photometry of the Nearby Galaxy Cluster A119

This paper presents multicolor optical photometry of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 119 (z = 0:0442) with the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) system of 15 intermediate bands. Within the BATC viewing field of 58'* 58', there are 368 galaxies with known spectroscopic redshifts, including 238 member galaxies (called sample I). Based on the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 1376 galaxies brighter than iBATC = 19:5, photometric redshift technique and the color-magnitude relation of earlytype galaxies are applied to select faint member galaxies. As a result, 117 faint galaxies were selected as new member galaxies. Combined with sample I, an enlarged sample (called sample II) of 355 member galaxies is obtained. Spatial distribution and localized velocity structure for two samples demonstrate that A119 is a dynamically complex cluster with at least three prominent substructures in the central region within 1 Mpc. A large velocity dispersion for the central clump indicates a merging along the line of sight. No significant evidences for morphology and luminosity segregations are found in both samples. With the evolutionary synthesis model PEGASE, environmental effect on the star formation properties is confirmed. Faint galaxies in low-density region tend to have longer time scales of star formation, smaller mean stellar ages, and lower metallicities of interstellar medium, which is in agreement with the context of hierarchical cosmological scenario.

Multicolor Photometry Study of the Galaxy Cluster A2589: Dynamics, Luminosity Function and Star Formation History

In this paper we present a multicolor photometry for A2589 ($z=0.0414$) with 15 intermediate bands in the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) system which covers an optical wavelength range from 3000 Å to 10000 Å. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for more than 5000 sources are achieved down to {\it V} $\sim$ 20 mag in about 1 deg$^{2}$ field. A2589 has been also covered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in photometric mode only. A cross-identification of the BATC-detected galaxies with the SDSS photometric catalog achieves 1199 galaxies brighter than $i=19.5$ mag, among which 68 member galaxies with known spectroscopic redshifts are found. After combining the SDSS five-band photometric data and the BATC SEDs, the technique of photometric redshift is applied to these galaxies for selecting faint member galaxies. The color-magnitude relation is taken as a further restriction of early-type cluster galaxies. As a result, 106 galaxies are newly selected as member galaxies. Spatial distribution of member galaxies shows a north-south elongation which agrees with the X-ray brightness profile and the orientation of central cD galaxy, NGC 7647. No substructures are detected on the basis of positions and radial velocities of cluster galaxies, indicating that A2589 is a well-relaxed system. The luminosity function of A2589 exhibits a peak at $M_{R} \sim -20$ mag and a dip at $M_{R} \sim -19 $ mag. The low-density outer regions are the preferred habitat of faint galaxies. With the evolutionary population synthesis model, PEGASE, the environmental effect on the star formation properties for 68 spectroscopically confirmed member galaxies is studied. The outlier faint galaxies tend to have longer time scales of star formation, shorter mean stellar ages, and lower metallicities of interstellar medium, which can be interpreted in the context of hierarchical cosmological scenario.
