Measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements in Λ(1520)Λ(1520) Photoproduction at 8.2-8.8 GeV

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the Λ(1520)Λ(1520) in the photoproduction reaction γp→Λ(1520)K+γp\rightarrow Λ(1520)K^+, via its subsequent decay to K−pK^{-}p. The measurement was performed as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized photon beam with Eγ=E_γ= 8.2-8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, −(t−t0)-(t-t_\text{0}). We compare the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are dominant in Λ(1520)Λ(1520) photoproduction.

Measurement of the D→K−π+π+π−D \to K^-π^+π^+π^- and D→K−π+π0D \to K^-π^+π^0 coherence factors and average strong-phase differences in quantum-correlated DDˉ{D\bar{D}} decays

The decays D→K−π+π+π−D\to K^-π^+π^+π^- and D→K−π+π0D \to K^-π^+π^0 are studied in a sample of quantum-correlated DDˉD\bar{D} pairs produced through the process e+e−→ψ(3770)→DDˉe^+e^- \to ψ(3770) \to D\bar{D}, exploiting a data set collected by the BESIII experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1^{-1}. Here DD indicates a quantum superposition of a D0D^0 and a Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 meson. By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle γγ of the Unitarity Triangle in B−→DK−B^- \to DK^- decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be RK3π=0.52−0.10+0.12R_{K3π}=0.52^{+0.12}_{-0.10} and RKππ0=0.78±0.04R_{Kππ^0}=0.78 \pm 0.04, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are δDK3π=(167−19+31)∘δ_D^{K3π}=\left(167^{+31}_{-19}\right)^\circ and δDKππ0=(196−15+14)∘δ_D^{Kππ^0}=\left(196^{+14}_{-15}\right)^\circ, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the D→K−π+π+π−D \to K^-π^+π^+π^- to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of γγ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6∘^\circ.

Analyzing (448.1±2.9)×106(448.1\pm2.9)\times10^6 ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the ψ(3686)→ωKS0KS0ψ(3686)\to ωK_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0} decay is observed for the first time. The branching fraction for this decay is determined to be Bψ(3686)→ωKS0KS0\mathcal{B}_{ψ(3686)\to ωK_{S}^{0}K^{0}_{S}}=(7.04±0.39±0.36)(7.04\pm0.39\pm0.36)×10−5\times10^{-5}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Search for baryon and lepton number violating decays D0→pˉe+D^{0}\to \bar{p}e^{+} and D0→pe−D^{0}\to pe^{-}

Using an electron-positron collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93~fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV, we search for the baryon and lepton number violating decays D0→pˉe+D^{0}\to \bar{p}e^{+} and D0→pe−D^{0}\to pe^{-}. No obvious signals are found with the current statistics. The upper limits on the branching fractions for D0→pˉe+D^{0}\to \bar{p}e^{+} and D0→pe−D^{0}\to pe^{-} are set to be 1.2×10−61.2\times 10^{-6} and 2.2×10−62.2\times 10^{-6} at 90\% confidence level, respectively.

Search for invisible decays of the ΛΛ baryon

A search for invisible decays of the ΛΛ baryon is carried out in the process J/ψ→ΛΛˉJ/ψ\toΛ\barΛ based on (1.0087±0.0044)×1010(1.0087\pm0.0044)\times10^{10} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector located at the BEPCII storage ring. No signals are found for the invisible decays of ΛΛ baryon, and the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be 7.4×10−57.4 \times 10^{-5} at the 90% confidence level. This is the first search for invisible decays of baryons; such searches will play an important role in constraining dark sector models related to the baryon asymmetry.

Search for new hadronic decays of hch_{c} and observation of hc→ppˉηh_{c}\to p\bar{p}η

A search for the hadronic decays of the hch_{c} meson to the final states ppˉπ+π−π0p\bar{p}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}, ppˉηp\bar{p}η, and ppˉπ0p\bar{p}π^0 via the process ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686) \to π^{0}{h_c} is performed using (4.48±0.03)×108(4.48\pm0.03)\times10^{8} ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay channel hc→ppˉηh_{c}\to p\bar{p}η is observed for the first time with a significance greater than 5σ5σ and a branching fraction of (6.41±1.74±0.53±1.00)×10−4\left( {6.41 \pm 1.74 \pm 0.53 \pm 1.00} \right) \times {10^{ -4}}, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and that from the branching fraction of ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686)\toπ^{0}h_{c}. Strong evidence for the decay hc→ppˉπ+π−π0{h_c} \to p\bar{p}{π^+}{π^-}{π^0} is found with a significance of 4.9σ4.9σ and a branching fraction of (3.84±0.83±0.69±0.58)×10−3\left( {3.84 \pm 0.83 \pm0.69} \pm 0.58 \right) \times {10^{ - 3}}. The significances include systematic uncertainties. No clear signal of the decay hc→ppˉπ0h_c\to p\bar{p}π^{0} is found, and an upper limit of 6.59×10−46.59\times 10^{-4} on its branching fraction is set at the 90% confidence level.

Search for the decay D0→π0ννˉD^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν

We present the first experimental search for the rare charm decay D0→π0ννˉD^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν. It is based on an e+e−e^+e^- collision sample consisting of 10.6×10610.6\times10^{6} pairs of D0Dˉ0D^0\bar{D}^0 mesons collected by the BESIII detector at s\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93~fb−1^{-1}. A data-driven method is used to ensure the reliability of the background modeling. No significant D0→π0ννˉD^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν signal is observed in data and an upper limit of the branching fraction is set to be 2.1×10−42.1\times 10^{-4} at the 90%\% confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint on charmed-hadron decays into dineutrino final states.

Search for the decay hc→π0J/ψh_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ

A search for the decay hc→π0J/ψh_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ is performed using a sample of hch_c produced in the reaction e+e−→π+π−hce^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-h_c. The data samples were collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.189 and 4.437 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb−1^{-1}. No significant signal is observed. Upper limits on the branching ratio B(hc→π0J/ψ)/B(hc→γηc→γK+K−π0)\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ)/\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowγη_c\rightarrowγK^+K^-π^0) and on the branching fraction B(hc→π0J/ψ)\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ) are determined to be 7.5×10−27.5\times10^{-2} and 4.7×10−44.7\times10^{-4} at 90%90\% confidence level, respectively. The latter is derived from the former using the measured branching fraction of the normalization channel. This is the first determination of the upper limit of the decay hc→π0J/ψh_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ.

Cross sections for the reactions e+e−→K+K−π+π−(π0)e^+e^-\rightarrow K^+K^-π^+π^-(π^0), K+K−K+K−(π0)K^+K^-K^+K^-(π^0), π+π−π+π−(π0)π^+π^-π^+π^-(π^0), ppˉπ+π−(π0)p\bar{p}π^+π^-(π^0) in the energy region between 3.773 and 4.600 GeV

Using the data samples collected in the energy range from 3.773 to 4.600 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the dressed cross sections as a function of center-of-mass energy for e+e−→K+K−π+π−(π0)e^+e^-\rightarrow K^+K^-π^+π^-(π^0), K+K−K+K−(π0)K^+K^-K^+K^-(π^0), π+π−π+π−(π0)π^+π^-π^+π^-(π^0), and ppˉπ+π−(π0)p\bar{p}π^+π^-(π^0). The cross sections for e+e−→K+K−K+K−π0e^+e^-\rightarrow K^+K^-K^+K^-π^0, ppˉπ+π−(π0)p\bar{p}π^+π^-(π^0) are the first measurements. Cross sections for the other five channels are much more precise than previous results in this energy region. We also search for charmonium and charmonium-like resonances, such as the Y(4230)Y(4230), decaying into the same final states. We find evidence of the ψ(4040)ψ(4040) decaying to π+π−π+π−π0π^+π^-π^+π^-π^0 with a statistical significance of 3.6σ3.6σ. Upper limits are provided for other decays since no clear signals are observed.

Evidence for Zc±Z_{c}^{\pm} decays into the ρ±ηcρ^{\pm} η_{c} final state

We study e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions with a π+π−π0ηcπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}η_{c} final state using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies s=4.226\sqrt{s}=4.226, 4.2584.258, 4.3584.358, 4.4164.416, and 4.6004.600 GeV. Evidence for the decay $\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac$ is reported with a statistical significance of 3.9σ3.9σ with various systematic uncertainties taken into account at s=4.226\sqrt{s} = 4.226 GeV, and the Born cross section times branching fraction $σ^{B}(\EE\to \pimp\zcpm)\times \BR(\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac)$ is measured to be (48±11±11) pb(48 \pm 11 \pm 11)\,\rm{pb}. The $\zcpm\to \rhopm\etac$ signal is not significant at the other center-of-mass energies and the corresponding upper limits are determined. In addition, no significant signal is observed in a search for $\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm}\etac$ with the same data samples. The ratios $R_{\zc}=\BR(\zcpm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcpm\to π^{\pm} \jpsi)$ and $R_{\zcp}=\BR(\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcppm\to π^{\pm} \hc)$ are obtained and used to discriminate between different theoretical interpretations of the $\zcpm$ and $\zcppm$.

Measurement of beam asymmetry for π−Δ++π^-Δ^{++} photoproduction on the proton at EγE_γ=8.5 GeV

We report a measurement of the π−π^- photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction γ⃗p→π−Δ++\vecγ p \rightarrow π^- Δ^{++} using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2--8.8 GeV. The asymmetry ΣΣ is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer tt to the Δ++Δ^{++} and compared to phenomenological models. We find that ΣΣ varies as a function of tt: negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of ∣t∣|t|. The reaction can be described theoretically by tt-channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. This is the first measurement of the process at this energy.

Measurement of the e+e−→Σ0Σˉ0e^{+}e^{-}\toΣ^{0}\barΣ^{0} cross sections at center-of-mass energies from 2.38642.3864 to 3.02003.0200 GeV

The Born cross sections of e+e−→Σ0Σˉ0e^{+}e^{-}\to Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0} are measured at center-of-mass energies from 2.38642.3864 to 3.02003.0200 GeV using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 328.5328.5 pb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The analysis makes use of a novel reconstruction method for energies near production threshold, while a single-tag method is employed at other center-of-mass energies. The measured cross sections are consistent with earlier results from BaBar, with a substantially improved precision. The cross-section lineshape can be well described by a perturbative QCD-driven energy function. In addition, the effective form factors of the Σ0Σ^{0} baryon are determined. The results provide precise experimental input for testing various theoretical predictions.

Measurements of e+e−→ηcπ+π−π0e^+e^-\rightarrow η_{\rm c}π^+ π^-π^0, ηcπ+π−η_{\rm c}π^+ π^- and ηcπ0γη_{\rm c}π^0γ at s\sqrt{s} from 4.18 to 4.60\,GeV, and search for a ZcZ_{\rm c} state close to the DDˉD\bar{D} threshold decaying to ηcπη_{\rm c}π at s\sqrt{s} = 4.23 GeV

We study ηcη_{\rm c} production at center-of-mass energies s\sqrt{s} from 4.18 to 4.60 GeV in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, corresponding to 7.3 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We measure the cross sections of the three different exclusive reactions e+e−→ηcπ+π−π0e^+e^-\rightarrow η_{\rm c}π^+ π^-π^0, e+e−→ηcπ+π−e^+e^- \rightarrow η_{\rm c}π^+ π^-, and e+e−→ηcπ0γe^+e^- \rightarrow η_{\rm c}π^0γ. We find significant ηcη_{\rm c} production in e+e−→ηcπ+π−π0e^+e^-\rightarrow η_{\rm c}π^+ π^-π^0 at s\sqrt{s} of 4.23 GeV and 4.26 GeV and observe a significant energy-dependent Born cross section that we measure to be consistent with the production via the intermediate Y(4260)Y(4260) resonance. In addition, we perform a search for a charmonium-like ZcZ_{\rm c} state close to the DDˉD\bar{D} threshold that decays to ηcπη_{\rm c}π, involving ground state charmonium, and observe no signal. Corresponding upper limits on the cross section of ηcη_{\rm c} and ZcZ_{\rm c} production are provided, where the yields are not found to be significant.

Weak phases and CP-symmetry tests in sequential decays of entangled double-strange baryons

Using a sample of 1.31×1091.31\times10^9 J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the electron-positron collider BEPCII, we analyse the full J/ψ→J/ψ\to Ξ−Ξ‾+Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+, Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\to Λπ^-, Λ→pπ−Λ\to pπ^-, Ξ‾+→Λ‾π+\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+, Λ‾→p‾π+\overlineΛ\to\overline{p}π^+ decay chain. A new method, exploiting the fact that the Ξ−Ξ‾+Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+ pair is entangled and sequentially decaying, and where the complete decay chains are reconstructed, is applied for the first time. This enables precision measurements of the decay parameters for the Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\toΛπ^- decay (αΞα_Ξ, ϕΞϕ_Ξ) as well as the Ξ‾+→Λ‾π+\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+ decay (α‾Ξ\overlineα_Ξ, ϕ‾Ξ\overlineϕ_Ξ). From the decay parameters, two independent CP tests were performed, quantified by the observables ACPΞA_{\rm CP}^Ξ and ΔϕΞΔϕ_Ξ. Our results, ACPΞA_{\rm CP}^Ξ = (6.0±13.4±5.6)×10−3(6.0\pm13.4\pm5.6)\times10^{-3} and ΔϕΞ=(−4.8±13.7±2.9)×10−3 radΔϕ_Ξ= (-4.8\pm13.7\pm2.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm rad}, are consistent with CP symmetry. Furthermore, our method enables a separation of strong and weak Ξ→ΛπΞ\toΛπ decay amplitudes. This results in the first direct measurement of the weak phase difference for any baryon decay. The result is found to be (ξP−ξS)=(1.2±3.4±0.8)×10−2(ξ_{P} - ξ_{S}) = (1.2\pm3.4\pm0.8)\times10^{-2} rad and is one of the most precise tests of CP symmetry for strange baryons. The strong phase difference is measured to be (δP−δS)=(−4.0±3.3±1.7)×10−2(δ_P - δ_S) = (-4.0\pm3.3\pm1.7)\times10^{-2} rad. In addition, we provide an independent measurement of the recently debated ΛΛ decay parameter, αΛ=0.757±0.011±0.008α_Λ = 0.757 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008 . The ΛΛ‾Λ\overlineΛ asymmetry is measured to be ACPΛ=(−3.7±11.7±9.0)×10−3A_{\rm CP}^Λ = (-3.7\pm11.7\pm9.0)\times10^{-3}.

The non-zero value of ΔΦΔΦ allows for a direct and simultaneous measurement of the decay asymmetry parameters of Σ+→pπ0 (α0=−0.998±0.037±0.009)Σ^{+}\rightarrow p π^{0}~(α_0 = -0.998\pm0.037\pm0.009) and Σˉ−→pˉπ0 (αˉ0=0.990±0.037±0.011)\barΣ^{-}\rightarrow \bar{p} π^{0}~(\barα_0 = 0.990\pm0.037\pm0.011), the latter value being determined for the first time. The average decay asymmetry, (α0−αˉ0)/2(α_{0} - \barα_{0})/2, is calculated to be −0.994±0.004±0.002-0.994\pm0.004\pm0.002. The CP asymmetry ACP,Σ=(α0+αˉ0)/(α0−αˉ0)=−0.004±0.037±0.010A_{\rm CP,Σ} = (α_0 + \barα_0)/(α_0 - \barα_0) = -0.004\pm0.037\pm0.010 is extracted for the first time, and is found to be consistent with CP conservation.

Analysis of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}

Using a data sample of 2.93 fb−12.93~fb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collisions collected at s=3.773GeV\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV in the BESIII experiment, we perform an analysis of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}. The Dalitz plot is analyzed using 1856±451856\pm 45 flavor-tagged signal decays. We find that the Dalitz plot is well described by a set of six resonances: a0(980)0a_0(980)^0, a0(980)+a_0(980)^+, ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020), a2(1320)+a_2(1320)^+, a2(1320)−a_2(1320)^- and a0(1450)−a_0(1450)^-. Their magnitudes, phases and fit fractions are determined as well as the coupling of a0(980)a_0(980) to KKˉK\bar{K}, gKKˉ=3.77±0.24(stat.)±0.35(sys.)GeVg_{K\bar{K}}=3.77\pm 0.24\text{(stat.)}\pm0.35\text{(sys.)} GeV. The branching fraction of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-} is measured using 11660±11811660\pm 118 untagged signal decays to be (4.51±0.05(stat.)±0.16(sys.))10−3(4.51\pm 0.05\text{(stat.)}\pm 0.16\text{(sys.)})10^{-3}. Both measurements are limited by their systematic uncertainties.

Cross section measurement of e+e−→η′J/ψe^+e^- \rightarrow η'J/ψ from s=4.178\sqrt{s} = 4.178 to 4.6004.600 GeV

The cross section of the process e+e−→η′J/ψe^+e^- \rightarrow η'J/ψ is measured at center-of-mass energies from s=\sqrt{s} = 4.178 to 4.600 GeV using data samples corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The dependence of the cross section on s\sqrt{s} shows an enhancement around 4.24.2 GeV. While the shape of the cross section cannot be fully explained with a single ψ(4160)ψ(4160) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) state, a coherent sum of the two states does provide a reasonable description of the data.

Determination of strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^-

We report the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 decays to KS,L0π+π−K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- using a sample of 2.93 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results provide the key inputs for a binned model-independent determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 with BB decays. Using our results, the decay model sensitivity to the γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 measurement is expected to be between 0.7∘^{\circ} and 1.2∘^{\circ}, approximately a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. The improved precision of this work ensures that measurements of γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 will not be limited by knowledge of strong phases for the next decade. Furthermore, our results provide critical input for other flavor-physics investigations, including charm mixing, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Erratum to "Measurement of the e+e−→π+π−e^+e^-\toπ^+π^- cross section between 600 and 900 MeV using initial state radiation"

In Phys. Lett. B 753, 629-638 (2016) [arXiv:1507.08188] the BESIII collaboration published a cross section measurement of the process e+e−→π+π−e^+e^-\to π^+ π^- in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV. In this erratum we report a corrected evaluation of the statistical errors in terms of a fully propagated covariance matrix. The correction also yields a reduced statistical uncertainty for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, which now reads as aμππ,LO(600−900 MeV)=(368.2±1.5stat±3.3syst)×10−10a_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}(600 - 900\,\mathrm{MeV}) = (368.2 \pm 1.5_{\rm stat} \pm 3.3_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-10}. The central values of the cross section measurement and of aμππ,LOa_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}, as well as the systematic uncertainties remain unchanged.

Future Physics Programme of BESIII

There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in the subjects of hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like XYZXYZ states at BESIII and BB factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related X(1835)X(1835) meson state at BESIII, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESIII over the remaining lifetime of BEPCII operation. This survey will help in the optimization of the data-taking plan over the coming years, and provides physics motivation for the possible upgrade of BEPCII to higher luminosity.

Inclusive charged and neutral particle multiplicity distributions in χcJχ_{cJ} and J/ψJ/ψ decays

Information from each Monte Carlo simulated decay event is used to construct matrices connecting the detected distributions to the input predetection "produced" distributions. Assuming these matrices also apply to data, they are used to predict the analogous produced distributions of the decay events. Using these, the charged particle multiplicities are compared with results from MARK I. Further, comparison of the distributions of the number of photons in data with those in Monte Carlo simulation indicates that G-parity conservation should be taken into consideration in the simulation.

Measurement of proton electromagnetic form factors in e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \to p\bar{p} in the energy region 2.00-3.08 GeV

The process of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is studied at 22 center-of-mass energy points (s\sqrt{s}) from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV, exploiting 688.5~pb−1^{-1} of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section~(σppˉσ_{p\bar{p}}) of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is measured with the energy-scan technique and it is found to be consistent with previously published data, but with much improved accuracy. In addition, the electromagnetic form-factor ratio (∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}|) and the value of the effective (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm{eff}}|), electric (∣GE∣|G_E|) and magnetic (∣GM∣|G_M|) form factors are measured by studying the helicity angle of the proton at 16 center-of-mass energy points. ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}| and ∣GM∣|G_M| are determined with high accuracy, providing uncertainties comparable to data in the space-like region, and ∣GE∣|G_E| is measured for the first time. We reach unprecedented accuracy, and precision results in the time-like region provide information to improve our understanding of the proton inner structure and to test theoretical models which depend on non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics.

The statistical significances are 12.9σ12.9σ and 7.7σ7.7 σ, respectively. The precision of B(D0→ωπ+π−)\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^+π^-) is improved by a factor of 2.1 over the CLEO measurement, and B(D+→ωπ+π0)\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to ωπ^+π^0) is measured for the first time. No significant signal of B(D0→ωπ0π0)\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^0π^0) is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction is B(D0→ωπ0π0)<1.10×10−3\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^0π^0) < 1.10 \times 10^{-3} at the 90%90\% confidence level. Measurement of the cross section for e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} and observation of an excited ΞΞ baryon

Using a total of 11.0 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data with center-of-mass energies between 4.009 GeV and 4.6 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we measure fifteen exclusive cross sections and effective form factors for the process e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} by means of a single baryon-tag method. After performing a fit to the dressed cross section of e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+}, no significant ψ(4230)ψ(4230) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) resonance is observed in the Ξ−Ξˉ+Ξ^{-}\barΞ^{+} final states, and upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on ΓeeBΓ_{ee}\mathcal{B} for the processes ψ(4230)ψ(4230)/ψ(4260)→Ξ−Ξˉ+ψ(4260)\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} are determined. In addition, an excited ΞΞ baryon at 1820 MeV/c2c^{2} is observed with a statistical significance of 6.2 ∼\sim 6.5σσ by including the systematic uncertainty, and the mass and width are measured to be M=(1825.5±4.7±4.7)M = (1825.5 \pm 4.7 \pm 4.7)~MeV/c2c^{2} and Γ=(17.0±15.0±7.9)Γ= (17.0 \pm 15.0 \pm 7.9)~MeV, which confirms the existence of the JP=32−J^{P}=\frac{3}{2}^{-} state Ξ(1820)Ξ(1820).

Measurement of the Photon Beam Asymmetry in γ⃗p→K+Σ0\vecγ p\to K^+Σ^0 at Eγ=8.5E_γ = 8.5 GeV

We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry ΣΣ for the reaction γ⃗p→K+Σ0\vecγ p\to K^+Σ^0(1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2-8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry ΣΣ was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable tt, and a single value of ΣΣ was extracted for events produced in the uu-channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry ΣΣ for the reaction in this energy range. For the tt-channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the tt-range studied, −t=(0.1−1.4) -t=(0.1-1.4)~(GeV/cc)2^{2}, with an average value of Σ=1.00±0.05Σ= 1.00\pm 0.05. This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the K∗K^{*}(892) Regge trajectory. A value of Σ=0.41±0.09Σ= 0.41 \pm 0.09 is obtained for the uu-channel integrated up to −u=2.0-u=2.0~(GeV/cc)2^{2}.

Model-independent determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D0D^0 and Dˉ0→KS,L0π+π−\bar{D}^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- and its impact on the measurement of the CKM angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3

Crucial inputs for a variety of CPCP-violation studies can be determined through the analysis of pairs of quantum-entangled neutral DD mesons, which are produced in the decay of the ψ(3770)ψ(3770) resonance. The relative strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 in the decays D0→KS,L0π+π−D^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- are studied using 2.93~fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data delivered by the BEPCII collider and collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV. Results are presented in regions of the phase space of the decay. These are the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D \to K_{S,L}^0π^+π^- decays. Using these parameters, the associated uncertainty on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 is expected to be between 0.7∘0.7^\circ and 1.2∘1.2^\circ, for an analysis using the decay B±→DK±B^{\pm}\rightarrow DK^{\pm}, D→KS0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_Sπ^+π^-, where DD represents a superposition of D0D^0 and D0ˉ\bar{D^0} states. This is a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. Furthermore, these results provide valuable input for charm-mixing studies, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Observation of a resonant structure in e+e−→ωηe^{+}e^{-} \to ωη and another in e+e−→ωπ0e^{+}e^{-} \to ωπ^{0} at center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV

Born cross sections for the processes e+e−→ωηe^+e^- \to ωη and e+e−→ωπ0e^+e^- \to ωπ^{0} have been determined for center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The results obtained in this work are consistent with previous measurements but with improved precision. Two resonant structures are observed. In the e+e−→ωηe^{+}e^{-} \to ωη cross sections, a resonance with a mass of (2179±21±3)MeV/c2(2179 \pm 21 \pm 3)\text{MeV}/c^2 and a width of (89±28±5)MeV(89 \pm 28 \pm 5)\text{MeV} is observed with a significance of 6.1σσ. Its mass and width are determined to be (2034±13±9)MeV/c2(2034 \pm 13 \pm 9)\text{MeV}/c^2 and (234±30±25)MeV(234 \pm 30 \pm 25)\text{MeV}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic.

The branching fractions are determined to be B(Ds+→K+η′)=(2.68±0.17±0.17±0.08)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+η^{\prime})=(2.68\pm0.17\pm0.17\pm0.08)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→η′π+)=(37.8±0.4±2.1±1.2)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toη^{\prime}π^+)=(37.8\pm0.4\pm2.1\pm1.2)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→K+η)=(1.62±0.10±0.03±0.05)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+η)=(1.62\pm0.10\pm0.03\pm0.05)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→ηπ+)=(17.41±0.18±0.27±0.54)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toηπ^+)=(17.41\pm0.18\pm0.27\pm0.54)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→K+KS0)=(15.02±0.10±0.27±0.47)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+K_S^0)=(15.02\pm0.10\pm0.27\pm0.47)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→KS0π+)=(1.109±0.034±0.023±0.035)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K_S^0π^+)=(1.109\pm0.034\pm0.023\pm0.035)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→K+π0)=(0.748±0.049±0.018±0.023)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+π^0)=(0.748\pm0.049\pm0.018\pm0.023)\times10^{-3}, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, and the third are from external input branching fraction of the normalization mode Ds+→K+K−π+D_s^+\to K^+K^-π^+. Precision of our measurements is significantly improved compared with that of the current world average values.

The GlueX Beamline and Detector

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 μμs. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. We describe the photon beam, the GlueX detector components, electronics, data-acquisition and monitoring systems, and the performance of the experiment during the first three years of operation.

Competition of superconductivity with the structural transition in Mo3Sb7

Prior to the superconducting transition at Tc = 2.3 K, Mo3Sb7 undergoes a symmetry-lowering, cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition at Ts = 53 K. We have monitored the pressure dependence of these two transitions by measuring the resistivity of Mo3Sb7 single crystals under various hydrostatic pressures up to 15 GPa. The application of external pressure enhances Tc but suppresses Ts until Pc ~ 10 GPa, above which a pressure-induced first order structural transition takes place and is manifested by the phase coexistence in the pressure range 8 < P < 12 GPa. The cubic phase above 12 GPa is also found to be superconducting with a higher Tc =6 K that decreases slightly with further increasing pressure. The variations with pressure of Tc and Ts satisfy the Bilbro-McMillan equation, i.e. Tc^nTs^(1-n) = constant, thus suggesting the competition of superconductivity with the structural transition that has been proposed to be accompanied with a spin-gap formation at Ts. This scenario is supported by our first-principles calculations which imply the plausible importance of magnetism that competes with the superconductivity in Mo3Sb7.

Correct Small-Truncated Excited State Wave functions Obtained via Minimization Principle for Excited States compared / opposed to Hylleraas-Undheim and McDonald higher roots

We demonstrate that, if a truncated expansion of a wave function is Large, then the standard excited states computational method, of optimizing one root of a secular equation, according to the theorem of Hylleraas, Undheim and McDonald (HUM), tends to the correct excited wave function, comparable to that obtained via our proposed minimization principle for excited states [J. Comput. Meth. Sci. Eng. 8, 277 (2008)] (independent of orthogonality to lower lying approximants). However, if a truncated expansion of a wave function is Small - that would be desirable for large systems - then the HUM-based methods may lead to an incorrect wave function - despite the correct energy (: according to the HUM theorem) whereas our method leads to correct, reliable, albeit Small truncated wave functions. The demonstration is done in He excited states, using truncated series Small expansions both in Hylleraas coordinates, and via standard configuration-interaction truncated Small expansions, in comparison with corresponding Large expansions. Beyond that, we give some examples of linear combinations of Hamiltonian eigenfunctions that have the energy of the 1st excited state, albeit they are orthogonal to it, demonstrating that the correct energy is not a criterion of correctness of the wave function.

Optical Observing Conditions at Delingha Station

SONG is a global ground based network of 1 meter telescopes for stellar time-domain science, an international collaboration involving many countries across the world. In order to enable a favourable duty cycle, the SONG network plans to create a homogeneous distribution of 4 nodes in each of the northern and southern hemispheres. A natural possibility was building one of the northern nodes in East Asia, preferably on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. During the last decade, a great deal of effort has been invested in searching for high a quality site for ground based astronomy in China, since this has been one of the major concerns for the development of Chinese astronomy. A number of sites on the plateau have been in operation for many years, but most of them are used only for radio astronomy, as well as small optical telescopes for applied astronomy. Several potential sites for large optical instruments have been identified by the plateau site survey, but as yet none of them have been adequately quantitatively characterised. Here we present results from a detailed multi-year study of the Delingha site, which was eventually selected for the SONG-China node. We also describe the site monitoring system that will allow an isolated SONG and 50BiN node to operate safely in an automated mode.

Photometric study of the pulsating, eclipsing binary OO Dra

We present a comprehensive photometric study of the pulsating, eclipsing binary OO Dra. Simultaneous B- and V-band photometry of the star was carried out on 14 nights. Revised orbital period and a new ephemeris were derived from the data. The first photometric solution of the binary system and the physical parameters of the component stars are determined. It reveals that OO Dra could be a detached system with the less-massive secondary component nearly filling in its Roche lobe. By subtracting the eclipsing light changes from the data, we obtained the intrinsic pulsating light curves of the hotter and massive primary component. Frequency analysis of the residuals light yields two confident pulsation modes in both B- and V-band data with the dominant frequency detected at 41.865 c/d. A brief discussion concerning the evolutionary status and the pulsation nature of the binary system is finally given.

Scaling of maximum probability density functions of velocity and temperature increments in turbulent systems

In this paper, we introduce a new way to estimate the scaling parameter of a self-similar process by considering the maximum probability density function (pdf) of tis increments. We prove this for HH-self-similar processes in general and experimentally investigate it for turbulent velocity and temperature increments. We consider turbulent velocity database from an experimental homogeneous and nearly isotropic turbulent channel flow, and temperature data set obtained near the sidewall of a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell, where the turbulent flow is driven by buoyancy. For the former database, it is found that the maximum value of increment pdf pmax⁡(τ)p_{\max}(τ) is in a good agreement with lognormal distribution. We also obtain a scaling exponent α≃0.37α\simeq 0.37, which is consistent with the scaling exponent for the first-order structure function reported in other studies. For the latter one, we obtain a scaling exponent αθ≃0.33α_θ\simeq0.33. This index value is consistent with the Kolmogorov-Obukhov-Corrsin scaling for passive scalar turbulence, but different from the scaling exponent of the first-order structure function that is found to be ζθ(1)≃0.19ζ_θ(1)\simeq 0.19, which is in favor of Bolgiano-Obukhov scaling. A possible explanation for these results is also given.

Spatially regularized reconstruction of fibre orientation distributions in the presence of isotropic diffusion

The connectivity and structural integrity of the white matter of the brain is nowadays known to be implicated into a wide range of brain-related disorders. However, it was not before the advent of diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) that researches have been able to examine the properties of white matter in vivo. Presently, among a range of various methods of dMRI, high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) is known to excel in its ability to provide reliable information about the local orientations of neural fasciculi (aka fibre tracts). Moreover, as opposed to the more traditional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), HARDI is capable of distinguishing the orientations of multiple fibres passing through a given spatial voxel. Unfortunately, the ability of HARDI to discriminate between neural fibres that cross each other at acute angles is always limited, which is the main reason behind the development of numerous post-processing tools, aiming at the improvement of the directional resolution of HARDI. Among such tools is spherical deconvolution (SD). Due to its ill-posed nature, however, SD standardly relies on a number of a priori assumptions which are to render its results unique and stable. In this paper, we propose a different approach to the problem of SD in HARDI, which accounts for the spatial continuity of neural fibres as well as the presence of isotropic diffusion. Subsequently, we demonstrate how the proposed solution can be used to successfully overcome the effect of partial voluming, while preserving the spatial coherency of cerebral diffusion at moderate-to-severe noise levels. In a series of both in silico and in vivo experiments, the performance of the proposed method is compared with that of several available alternatives, with the comparative results clearly supporting the viability and usefulness of our approach.

Nonlinear PT-symmetric models bearing exact solutions

We study the nonlinear Schro¨\ddot{o}dinger equation with a PT-symmetric potential. Using a hydrodynamic formulation and connecting the phase gradient to the field amplitude, allows for a reduction of the model to a Duffing or a generalized Duffing equation. This way, we can obtain exact soliton solutions existing in the presence of suitable PT-symmetric potentials, and study their stability and dynamics. We report interesting new features, including oscillatory instabilities of solitons and (nonlinear) PT-symmetry breaking transitions, for focusing and defocusing nonlinearities.
