High-brilliance ultra-narrow-band x-rays via electron radiation in colliding laser pulses

A setup of a unique x-ray source is put forward employing a relativistic electron beam interacting with two counter-propagating laser pulses in the nonlinear few-photon regime. In contrast to Compton scattering sources, the envisaged x-ray source exhibits an extremely narrow relative bandwidth of the order of $10^{-4}$, comparable with an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). The brilliance of the x-rays can be an order of magnitude higher than that of a state-of-the-art Compton source. By tuning the laser intensities and the electron energy, one can realize either a single peak or a comb-like x-ray source of around keV energy. The laser intensity and the electron energy in the suggested setup are rather moderate, rendering this scheme compact and table-top size, as opposed to XFEL and synchrotron infrastructures.

Tunneling ionization in ultrashort laser pulses: edge-effect and remedy

Tunneling ionization of an atom in ultrashort laser pulses is considered. When the driving laser pulse is switched-on and -off with a steep slope, the photoelectron momentum distribution (PMD) shows an edge-effect because of the photoelectron diffraction by the time-slit of the pulse. The trivial diffraction pattern of the edge effect consisting of fast oscillations in the PMD disguises in the deep nonadiabatic regime the physically more interesting features in the spectrum which originate from the photoelectron dynamics. We point out the precise conditions how to avoid this scenario experimentally and if unavoidable in theory we put forward an efficient method to remove the edge-effect in the PMD. This allows to highlight the nonadiabatic dynamical features of the PMD, which is indispensable for their further investigation in complex computationally demanding scenarios. The method is firstly demonstrated on a one-dimensional problem, and further applied in three-dimensions for the attoclock. The method is validated by a comparison of analytical results via the strong-field approximation with numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Enhancement of pair creation due to locality in bound-continuum interactions

Electron-positron pair production from vacuum is studied in combined background fields, a binding electric potential well and a laser field. The production process is triggered by the interactions between the bound states in the potential well and the continuum states in the Dirac sea. By tuning the binding potential well, the pair production can be strongly affected by the locality of the bound states. The narrower bound states in position space are more efficient for pair production. This is in contrast to what is commonly expected that the wider extended bound states have larger region to interact with external fields and would thus create more particles. This surprise can be explained as the more localized bound states have a much wider extension in the momentum space, which can enhance the bound-continuum interactions in the creation process. This enhancement manifests itself in both perturbative and non-perturbative production regimes.

Bosonic pair creation and the Schiff-Snyder-Weinberg effect

Interactions between different bound states in bosonic systems can lead to pair creation. We study this process in detail by solving the Klein-Gordon equation on space-time grids in the framework of time-dependent quantum field theory. By choosing specific external field configurations, two bound states can become pseudodegenerate, which is commonly referred to as the Schiff-Snyder-Weinberg effect. These pseudodegenerate bound states, which have complex energy eigenvalues, are related to the pseudo-Hermiticity of the Klein-Gordon Hamiltonian. In this work, the influence of the Schiff-Snyder-Weinberg effect on pair production is studied. A generalized Schiff-Snyder-Weinberg effect, where several pairs of pseudodegenerate states appear, is found in combined electric and magnetic fields. The generalized Schiff-Snyder-Weinberg effect likewise triggers pair creation. The particle number in these situations obeys an exponential growth law in time enhancing the creation of bosons, which cannot be found in fermionic systems.

Validity of One-Dimensional QED for a System with Spatial Symmetry

We examine the accuracy of an intrinsically one-dimensional quantum electrodynamics to predict accurately the forces and charges of a three-dimensional system that has a high degree of symmetry and therefore depends effectively only on a single coordinate. As a test case we analyze two charged capacitor plates that are infinitely extended along two coordinate directions. Using the lowest-order fine structure correction to the photon propagator we compute the vacuum's induced charge polarization density and show that the force between the charged plates is increased. Although a one-dimensional theory cannot take the transverse character of the virtual (force-mediating) photons into account, nevertheless it predicts, in lowest order of the fine-structure constant, the Coulomb force law between the plates correctly. However, the quantum correction to the classical result is slightly different between the 1d and 3d theories with the polarization charge density induced from the vacuum underestimated by the 1d approach.
