Computing singular elements modulo squares

The group of singular elements was first introduced by Helmut Hasse and later it has been studied by numerous authors including such well known mathematicians as: Cassels, Furtwängler, Hecke, Knebusch, Takagi and of course Hasse himself; to name just a few. The aim of the present paper is to present algorithms that explicitly construct groups of singular and $S$-singular elements (modulo squares) in a global function field.

Computing with quadratic forms over number fields

This paper presents fundamental algorithms for the computational theory of quadratic forms over number fields. In the first part of the paper, we present algorithms for checking if a given non-degenerate quadratic form over a fixed number field is either isotropic (respectively locally isotropic) or hyperbolic (respectively locally hyperbolic). Next we give a method of computing the dimension of an anisotropic part of a quadratic forms. The second part of the paper is devoted to algorithms computing two field invariants: the level and the Pythagoras number. Ultimately we present an algorithm verifying whether two number fields have isomorphic Witt rings (i.e. are Witt equivalent).

Places, cuts and orderings of function fields

In this paper we investigate the space of $\mathbb{R}$-places of an algebraic function field of one variable. We deal with the problem of determining when two orderings of such a field correspond to a single $\mathbb{R}$-place. To this end we introduce and study the space of cuts on a real curve and prove that the space is homeomorphic to the space of orderings. Finally, we prove that two cuts (consequently, two orderings) correspond to a single $\mathbb{R}$-place if they are induced by a single ultrametric ball.
