Generalized Peierls substitution for the tight-binding model of twisted multilayer graphene in a magnetic field

We propose a generalized Peierls substitution method in conjunction with the tight-binding model to explore the magnetic quantization and quantum Hall effect in twisted multilayer graphene under a magnetic field. The Bloch-basis tight-binding Hamiltonian is constructed for large twist angle while a simplified tight-binding model is employed for the magic angle. We investigate extensively the band structures, Landau levels (LLs), and quantum Hall conductivity (QHC) of twisted bilayer graphene and twisted double bilayer graphene, as well as their dependence on the twist angle. Comparison between these crucial properties of monolayer graphene, Bernal bilayer graphene, and the twisted systems is carefully made to highlight the roles played by twisting. The unique selection rules of inter-LL transition, which is crucial for achieving a deep understanding of the step structures of QHC, are identified through the properties of LL wave functions. Our theoretical model opens up an opportunity for comprehension of the interplay between an applied magnetic field and the twisting effect associated with multilayer graphene.

Rashba spin-orbit coupling and quantum-interference effect for a pair of spin-correlated electrons in their tunneling and reflection under a step potential

We present both theory and numerical-computation results for the transmission and reflection probability currents of a charged particle across a potential step in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbit interaction. By varying kinetic energy and angle of incident electrons or barrier height, different features associated with tunneling and reflection of electrons are revealed by inter-spin-channel electron tunnelings and reflections. These unique properties are further accompanied by spin-state quantum interference of either a reflected or transmitted pairs of spin-correlated electrons with the same kinetic energy but in different spin-orbital states. Such distinctive features are expected to give rise to a lot of applications in both spintronics and quantum-computation devices.

Coulomb excitations of monolayer germanene

The feature-rich electronic excitations of monolayer germanene lie in the significant spin-orbital coupling and the buckled structure. The collective and single- particle excitations are diversified by the magnitude and direction of transferred momentum, the Fermi energy and the gate voltage. There are four kinds of plasmon modes, according to the unique frequency- and momentum-dependent phase diagrams. They behave as two-dimensional acoustic modes at long wavelength. However, for the larger momenta, they might change into another kind of undamped plasmons, become the seriously suppressed modes in the heavy intraband e-h excitations, keep the same undamped plasmons, or decline and then vanish in the strong interband e-h excitations. Germanene, silicene and graphene are quite different from one another in the main features of the diverse plasmon modes.

Configuration-enriched magnetoelectronic spectra of AAB-stacked trilayer graphene

We developed the generalized tight-binding model to study the magneto-electronic properties of AAB-stacked trilayer graphene. Three groups of Landau levels (LLs) are characterized by the dominating subenvelope function on distinct sublattices. Each LL group could be further divided into two sub-groups in which the wavefunctions are, respectively, localized at 2/6 (5/6) and 4/6 (1/6) of the total length of the enlarged unit cell. The unoccupied conduction and the occupied valence LLs in each sub-group behave similarly. For the first group, there exist certain important differences between the two sub-groups, including the LL energy spacings, quantum numbers, spatial distributions of the LL wavefunctions, and the field-dependent energy spectra. The LL crossings and anticrossings occur frequently in each sub-group during the variation of field strengths, which thus leads to the very complex energy spectra and the seriously distorted wavefunctions. Also, the density of states (DOS) exhibits rich symmetric peak structures. The predicted results could be directly examined by experimental measurements. The magnetic quantization is quite different among the AAB-, AAA-, ABA-, and ABC-stacked configurations.

Rich magneto-absorption spectra in AAB-stacked trilayer graphene

The generalized tight-binding model is developed to investigate the feature-rich magneto-optical properties of AAB-stacked trilayer graphene. Three intragroup and six intergroup inter-Landau-level (inter-LL) optical excitations largely enrich the magneto-absorption peaks. In general, the former are much higher than the latter, depending on the phases and amplitudes of LL wavefunctions. The absorption spectra exhibit the single- or twin-peak structures which are determined by the quantum modes, LL energy spectra and Fermion distribution. The splitting LLs, with different localization centers (2/6 and 4/6 positions in a unit cell), can generate very distinct absorption spectra. There exist extra single peaks because of LL anticrosings. AAB, AAA, ABA, and ABC stackings quite differ from one another in terms of the inter-LL category, frequency, intensity, and structure of absorption peaks. The main characteristics of LL wavefunctions and energy spectra and the Fermi-Dirac function are responsible for the configuration-enriched magneto-optical spectra.
