Specht property of varieties of graded Lie algebras

Let UTn(F)UT_n(F) be the algebra of the n×nn\times n upper triangular matrices and denote UTn(F)(−)UT_n(F)^{(-)} the Lie algebra on the vector space of UTn(F)UT_n(F) with respect to the usual bracket (commutator), over an infinite field FF. In this paper, we give a positive answer to the Specht property for the ideal of the Zn\mathbb{Z}_n-graded identities of UTn(F)(−)UT_n(F)^{(-)} with the canonical grading when the characteristic pp of FF is 0 or is larger than n−1n-1. Namely we prove that every ideal of graded identities in the free graded Lie algebra that contains the graded identities of UTn(F)(−)UT_n(F)^{(-)}, is finitely based. Moreover we show that if FF is an infinite field of characteristic p=2p=2 then the Z3\mathbb{Z}_3-graded identities of UT3(−)(F)UT_3^{(-)}(F) do not satisfy the Specht property. More precisely, we construct explicitly an ideal of graded identities containing that of UT3(−)(F)UT_3^{(-)}(F), and which is not finitely generated as an ideal of graded identities.

Z\mathbb{Z}-graded identities of the Lie algebras U1U_1 in characteristic 2

Let KK be any field of characteristic two and let U1U_1 and W1W_1 be the Lie algebras of the derivations of the algebra of Laurent polynomials K[t,t−1]K[t,t^{-1}] and of the polynomial ring K[t]K[t], respectively. The algebras U1U_1 and W1W_1 are equipped with natural Z\mathbb{Z}-gradings. In this paper, we provide bases for the graded identities of U1U_1 and W1W_1, and we prove that they do not admit any finite basis.

Z\mathbb{Z}-graded polynomial identities of the Grassmann algebra

Let FF be an infinite field of characteristic different from 2, and let EE be the Grassmann algebra of an infinite dimensional FF-vector space LL. In this paper we study the Z\mathbb{Z}-graded polynomial identities of EE with respect to certain Z\mathbb{Z}-grading such that the vector space LL is homogeneous in the grading. More precisely, we construct three types of Z\mathbb{Z}-gradings on EE, denoted by E∞E^{\infty}, Ek∗E^{k^\ast} and EkE^{k}, and we give the explicit form of the corresponding Z\mathbb{Z}-graded polynomial identities. We show that the homogeneous superalgebras E∞E_{\infty}, Ek∗E_{k^\ast} and EkE_{k} studied in \cite{disil} can be obtained from E∞E^{\infty}, Ek∗E^{k^\ast} and EkE^{k} as quotient gradings. Moreover we exhibit several other types of homogeneous Z\mathbb{Z}-gradings on EE, and describe their graded identities.

2-graded polynomial identities for the Jordan algebra of the symmetric matrices of order two

The Jordan algebra of the symmetric matrices of order two over a field KK has two natural gradings by Z2\mathbb{Z}_2, the cyclic group of order 2. We describe the graded polynomial identities for these two gradings when the base field is infinite and of characteristic different from 2. We exhibit bases for these identities in each of the two cases. In one of the cases we perform a series of computations in order to reduce the problem to dealing with associators while in the other case one employs methods and results from Invariant theory. Moreover we extend the latter grading to a Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-grading on BnB_n, the Jordan algebra of a symmetric bilinear form in a vector space of dimension nn (n=1n=1, 2, \dots, ∞\infty). We call this grading the \textsl{scalar} one since its even part consists only of the scalars. As a by-product we obtain finite bases of the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-graded identities for BnB_n. In fact the last result describes the weak Jordan polynomial identities for the pair (Bn,Vn)(B_n, V_n).

Automorphisms and superalgebra structures on the Grassmann algebra

Let FF be a field of characteristic zero and let EE be the Grassmann algebra of an infinite dimensional FF-vector space LL. In this paper we study the superalgebra structures (that is the Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-gradings) that the algebra EE admits. By using the duality between superalgebras and automorphisms of order 22 we prove that in many cases the Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-graded polynomial identities for such structures coincide with the Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-graded polynomial identities of the "typical" cases E∞E_{\infty}, Ek∗E_{k^\ast} and EkE_{k} where the vector space LL is homogeneous. Recall that these cases were completely described by Di Vincenzo and Da Silva in \cite{disil}. Moreover we exhibit a wide range of non-homogeneous Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-gradings on EE that are Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-isomorphic to E∞E_{\infty}, Ek∗E_{k^\ast} and EkE_{k}. In particular we construct a Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-grading on EE with only one homogeneous generator in LL which is Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-isomorphic to the natural Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-grading on EE, here denoted by EcanE_{can}.

GK-dimension of the Lie algebra of generic 2×22\times 2 matrices

Recently Machado and Koshlukov have computed the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of the relatively free algebra Fm=Fm(var(sl2(K)))F_m=F_m(\text{var}(sl_2(K))) of rank mm in the variety of algebras generated by the three-dimensional simple Lie algebra sl2(K)sl_2(K) over an infinite field KK of characteristic different from 2. They have shown that GKdim(Fm)=3(m−1)\text{GKdim}(F_m)=3(m-1). The algebra FmF_m is isomorphic to the Lie algebra generated by mm generic 2×22\times 2 matrices. Now we give a new proof for GKdim(Fm)\text{GKdim}(F_m) using classical results of Procesi and Razmyslov combined with the observation that the commutator ideal of FmF_m is a module of the center of the associative algebra generated by mm generic traceless 2×22\times 2 matrices.

On the polynomial identities of the algebra M11(E)M_{11}(E)

Verbally prime algebras are important in PI theory. They were described by Kemer over a field KK of characteristic zero: 0 and K<T>K<T> (the trivial ones), Mn(K)M_n(K), Mn(E)M_n(E), Mab(E)M_{ab}(E). Here K<T>K<T> is the free associative algebra of infinite rank, with free generators TT, EE denotes the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra over KK, Mn(K)M_n(K) and Mn(E)M_n(E) are the n×nn\times n matrices over KK and over EE, respectively. The algebras Mab(E)M_{ab}(E) are subalgebras of Ma+b(E)M_{a+b}(E), see their definition below. The generic (also called relatively free) algebras of these algebras have been studied extensively. Procesi described the generic algebra of Mn(K)M_n(K) and lots of its properties. Models for the generic algebras of Mn(E)M_n(E) and Mab(E)M_{ab}(E) are also known but their structure remains quite unclear. In this paper we study the generic algebra of M11(E)M_{11}(E) in two generators, over a field of characteristic 0. In an earlier paper we proved that its centre is a direct sum of the field and a nilpotent ideal (of the generic algebra), and we gave a detailed description of this centre. Those results were obtained assuming the base field infinite and of characteristic different from 2. In this paper we study the polynomial identities satisfied by this generic algebra. We exhibit a basis of its polynomial identities. It turns out that this algebra is PI equivalent to a 5-dimensional algebra of certain upper triangular matrices. The identities of the latter algebra have been studied; these were described by Gordienko. As an application of our results we describe the subvarieties of the variety of unitary algebras generated by the generic algebra in two generators of M11(E)M_{11}(E). Also we describe the polynomial identities in two variables of the algebra M11(E)M_{11}(E).

The centre of generic algebras of small PI algebras

Verbally prime algebras are important in PI theory. They are well known over a field KK of characteristic zero: 0 and K<T>K<T> (the trivial ones), Mn(K)M_n(K), Mn(E)M_n(E), Mab(E)M_{ab}(E). Here K<T>K<T> is the free associative algebra with free generators TT, EE is the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra over KK, Mn(K)M_n(K) and Mn(E)M_n(E) are the n×nn\times n matrices over KK and over EE, respectively. Moreover Mab(E)M_{ab}(E) are certain subalgebras of Ma+b(E)M_{a+b}(E), defined below. The generic algebras of these algebras have been studied extensively. Procesi gave a very tight description of the generic algebra of Mn(K)M_n(K). The situation is rather unclear for the remaining nontrivial verbally prime algebras. In this paper we study the centre of the generic algebra of M11(E)M_{11}(E) in two generators. We prove that this centre is a direct sum of the field and a nilpotent ideal (of the generic algebra). We describe the centre of this algebra. As a corollary we obtain that this centre contains nonscalar elements thus we answer a question posed by Berele.
